USA, Canada / Think you're Polish (and live in the USA)? [161]

At this point, it would take an emmigration lawyer to restart my US citizenship proceedings. So, for me to hand some money to a shyster, advantages would have to be pretty clear.

Why is that? I think you can file your application at any time and any number of years after you received your green card, and it's quite speedy these days. The application is quite long, but nothing what you couldn't do by yourself.

Life / $3,000-$4,000 a month - would we have enough money to live in Poland? [273]

Where on earth do you live? $8400 usd per year in property taxes. Thats outrageous, ten times what I pay in London for instance.

New Jersey, USA. I think it's outrageous too. But not quite as outrageous as $13,000 that my friend pays, one town away (for an average house as well).

Marynka11 maybe you're trying to have a lifestyle you really can't afford? we're not all born princes and princesses.

I missed the part where I complained about not being able to afford it.

rent for an apartment or mortgage for a house!!?, i've never heard anyone paying more than 1200-1500 a month for either one, and that's in good neighborhoods. $2000 with all the utility bills i'd understand.

Ni it's not. It's what it is where I'm am. Property tax is included however and it's what kills people here. Our town has a lot businesses so we pay $700 dollars a month, but in the neighboring towns you would pay $1,300 monthly on a property like ours (which is nothing special BTW).

You can move to a different town and get a 2 bedroom for little more than $1000 dollars but you would be sending your kids to crappy schools.

I've been trying to think of the advantages of obtaining US citizenship, if one has a US residency card already, and Polish passport.
Can anyone list a few?
And if we can keep it from getting contentious, that would be just great.

Some very practical reasons to get the citizehsip:

• you can't get tenure in public schools without being a US citizen
• you can't go and live abroad for a year or so without jeopardizing your status
• you can receive social security benefits abroad without problems

I am still homesick and still can not tell you where exactly is my HOME.

I'm on the same boat. Except my husband won't even consider moving to Poland.
I wish you the best of luck with your plans.

Mikolajki

Where is that. It sounds somewhat familiar.

I haven't been in Poland a few years so i dunno but i hear most things are more expensive than in the States, yet people's salaries are much lower.

I meant s2good2 should buy the clothes in the US and bring them over to Poland if he moves. You are right, manufactured goods more expensive in Poland, relatively to earnings even the food is more expensive. But the rent and the services are cheaper there.

Now tell me, you can't live with $4000.00 here.

Rent/mortgage (2 bedroom apartment/small house): $2000 - $2,500
Utilities / Cable /Phones: $400
Health insurance: for a family $700 - $ 900
Groceries: $600 - $800
Car insurance/Gas: $200 (in most households 2 cars are a necessity)
Childcare ?
Extras ?

No way, couldn't make it on $ 4,000...

PennBoy
But the OP does have a family. Plus he is self employed, which means he pays his own health insurance which is probably six times more of what it would be in Poland. Now add mortgage to that, car payments/insurance, food etc. A family's life in the NYC area on $4,000 would not be a picnic. I guess Colorado is somewhat cheaper.

s2ggod2, if you go to Poland, just make sure you buy all the clothes you need in the US. They are very expensive there, especially the kids wear. I guess you can also have all necessary furniture shipped to Poland, maybe even your car, but I'm not sure about it. If you don't have to start from scratch you will be just fine on the money you have.

News / Warsaw: trial of cop killers [3]

If he was on vacation, he probably wasn't wearing an uniform. Uniform could have scared them maybe.

Such a sad story and I'm sorry for his little girls. Those jerks should be kept in prison for life. 25 years is way too little. I hope it's at least without parole.

History / Why is there NOTHING (besides Gdansk and Szczecin) in former Prussia? [80]

In fact the simple Prussian folks suffered a lot because of the political shifts, and it can't be denied. My mother-in-law is from East Prussia. They have lost their farm and everything they had overnight, were put on some train that went for days and days and she and her 6 brothers and sisters got barely any food or drink, and once they got to Germany the were considered some sort of pest that was send there to compete for the already sparse food supplies.

Versöhnung is a good thing.

think for second Marynka, in Poland people speak Polish, right?

Guesswho, like I said, but that logic, the only language spoken in California should be English. You are contradicting yourself.

Gdansk is a strategically important city and I see why the Prussians, Kreuzritter and others had constant interest in it. But it's longest history is Polish and no one can deny it.

Not quite because I'm not saying that Danzig belongs to Germany now, do I?

What are you saying exactly by this language story? That it's not a historically Polish city?

o insecure with your current borders that you have to deny the rich and long german past in your new territories?

Little over 100 years is not that long. And I don't deny it.

Po polsku / Młodzi polscy prozaicy - kogo polecacie? [66]

Alex, gratuluję znajomości polszczyzny. Jestem pod wrażeniem. Jeśli można spytać, jaki jest twój język ojczysty?

Jeśli chodzi o autorów, to głęboko polecam Marka Hłaskę. Być może nie najwspółcześniejszy, ale jeśli chodzi o klimat to w moim mniemaniu jest nie do pobicia.

No you need to flash boobs if you're hot, i'm just gonna contradict you for sport anyway.

You are not contradicting me. You are contradicting history.

And for all those who think we need to talk about Wroclaw in this thread: Wroclaw was not part of the East Prussia. If you look at the map, I think the OP was talking about the blue area in the north east. The western Poland is one of the better developed areas in the country.

Rubbish.

Jesus Chrrist, I need to quote Wikipedia because someone did not pay attention in their history class. Here:
Obszar Prus Wschodnich pokrywały w większości tereny rolnicze (pola uprawne 51%, łąki i pastwiska 23%), ze stosunkowo niewielkim udziałem obszarów leśnych (18%, wobec średniej dla całych Prus 23%)[1].
