UK, Ireland / THE BIGGEST POLISH COMMUNITY IN U.K? [40]

What's more true is that they were so desperate that they were exploited by British employers to undercut wage rates

Exactly - bizarre statement by Milliband.

Some good news is that more and more Poles in the UK are joining Unions.

I wouldn't call that good news as such myself. Talk about reduced living standards - rampant, intransigent unions are one of the biggest obstacles to economic growth that there is.

Good that poles are protecting themselves but unions are rarely necessary for this these days IMO. Employment law and a solicitor's letter is usually more than sufficient.

News / Upping the speed limit in Poland [92]

Has anybody else noticed that once a Poles crosses the boarder to Czech Republic or Germany how completely nuts their driving becomes.

I'd say it's nothing more than a jurisdiction thing, and not particularly "Polish".

E.g. people in Northern Ireland will say that those from the republic drive like lunatics when in the north - and I can attest to the converse also.

Love / Good looking Polish women with ugly men [416]

Oh, and guys don't always fall for Miss Universe either.

Indeed.

Barbie type/California plastic are the least attractive types for me by far.

Love / Why are Polish women so sexy ? [390]

Why are Polish women so sexy?

Is this a leading question or what - simple answer: they are not, particularly.

USA, Canada / Which countries are Americans usually traveling to? [114]

Not necessarily. She said that would be her view - so maybe it's the case that she'll be forced to watch someone swinging on a hammock.

f stop could be shackled to a tree in rags for all we know

USA, Canada / CULTURE SHOCK! (of my Polish finance who visited the US) [210]

you wrote that the rest of the world doesn't take baseball seriously

No, broadly speaking, it doesn't. Simple as. Don't know why you are going on about it.

I didn't say nobody at all is interested or plays it but it is a minority sport and barely registers for most people.

and here, we can see your last, and even more embarrassing attempt to save face by using a diversion:

: ) : )

OK, right professor - I give up. I am taken apart by your ruhless logic. How can I defend myself : )

Any more incisive critiques in your dissertation? You are way too full of your own importance mate : )

And by the way, before you have a fit entirely, I was initially addressing the profoundly informed tygrys, who opted to represent the planet (sorry, the US) by enlightening the rest of us as to the current status of soccer in the world.

Happy Christmas and watch out for those snowballs - I'll watch out for low flying baseballs - they're everywhere you know!

LOL - yeah, and I'm sure you "can find" lacrosse in latvia too. Somewhere.

Just read back from post #190 and admit to yourself - if not to anybody else - that you are simply bigging up the tiny for no apparent reason.

And you try to say that I'm making up arguments? LOL

A bit rich coming from PF's resident "weatherman"

Good luck with the world wide marketing of the unstoppable global sports phenomenon that is baseball

; )

oh keep your panties on! i mean honestly, take a deep breath and address what is at hand instead of making up imaginary arguments.

I'm fine mate - don't actually give two sh1tes about any sport - or arguing with you for that matter.

So why say this:

there are teams from all over the world that fly in to compete

...unless you were trying to make a point of just how INSANE the world is about American sports?

I said the rest of the world doesn't really take them seriously. And they don't.

USA, Canada / CULTURE SHOCK! (of my Polish finance who visited the US) [210]

there are teams from all over the world that fly in to compete

Right. And this attracts the same level of interest internationally as soccer? LOL

They are INSANE about baseball in South America??

Try telling that to the average Brazilian or Argentinian etc etc. If they INSANE about baseball I struggle to think of an adjective that would describe how they feel about soccer then.

For what it's worth, I have zero interest in soccer (or any sport) but don't try to tell me it's not EASILY the most popular sport in the world BY FAR and that interest outside of the US & Canada in baseball, American football etc is niche at best? C'mon!

They only play soccer, which is a game for children and little girls and never taken seriously

LOL - never taken seriously by Americans you mean. Most of the rest of the countries on theplanet take it quite seriously.

Would it surprise you to find out that the rest of the world doesn't take American football or baseball seriously?

USA, Canada / Which countries are Americans usually traveling to? [114]

But what's the deal with the French hating Americans?

It's a bit of a myth really IMO - I've met a lot of French people and spent some time in France. Most don't hate the US at all.

Although it may be grounded in a grain of truth, i.e. the supposed French appreciation of high culture: philosophy; haute cuisine; arty movies etc vs what the French see as low culture from the US: action movies; McDonalds; guns etc

There may be an element that at one stage saw Americans as "philistines", and perhaps the view has lingered to an extent. I really don't think it's widespread though.

Plus, the French can be pretty snobbish to be honest : )

Is it because they don't try and speak French?

Well, never a good idea when in France. Ever.

Imagine it the other way around? : )

British accent

"British accent" ?? That would be all varieties of Scottish,Welsh, English etc

No such thing as a "British" accent!

even the Brits like us

To be perfectly honest, I think many British and Irish people have a slightly comical view of Amercians. They tend not to actively dislike them but do tend to think that they are 'amusingly different' sometimes - based on the typical retired, badly dressed, overwieght kind of "innocents abroad" tourist but also in general, on the "m'am" and "sir" thing (which is often seen as quaintly old fashioned) and just that Americans and can often seem much louder, overly confident, unselfconscious etc

It's not a criticism, it's just in my experience, this is how I think Americans are often viewed over here.

Of course I totally accept that the 'amusingly different' aspect works both ways also : )

Food / Let's Play a Game-Name a Polish Food (and if you like it or hate it) [12]

Tripe soup.

In that case I'm fairly certain I wouldn't like it. Hate carp too - although I love fish generally.

There is a fairly standard smooth skinned smoked dark sausage (not kabanossi) which is really good.

Bigos is only edible to me. It's just a mushy pile of vaguely meaty, vaguely cabbagey salty sourness. Nothing against it, just utterly indifferent to it.

some of you on PF are not representing the general opinion of the population of your country

NO! Impossible!

A motley collection of bad tempered nationalists, racists and conspiracy theorists (among others) feverishly clattering, wild eyed on their keyboards simply have to be an accurate sample poll...

Work / If you were to compere Polish Unis and Unis/Colleges in your country... [75]

you can even get a degree in "sound production" these days.

What do you mean "even" ?!

It's pretty technical, scientific etc. I'm sure there are much more mickey mouse courses than that.

Ah just saw Seanus's example - that's more like it !

Not even, Krakow?

AFAIK the Jagellonian is the best regarded Polish university - but I think it's ranked at 300 odd in Europe.

Life / During winter in Poland, does petrol in the car freezes [60]

I stopped that as it contains petroleum not healthy for paintwork.

Loads of so called car-care products (tar/bug wipes, wax etc) contain petroleum also though so I wouldn't think it would be disasterous to use it.

Language / Polish guitar chords translated to English [13]

tab!

Different thing though. Tab is the notation of a sequence or combination of notes if the guitar line is mainly riff or solo based.

Very often tablature is only supplied because there is no alternative but when chords are to be played they are usually simply noted as such e.g. Fm7, Am, Bdim etc etc although sometimes the more complex chords are tabbed too.
