Life / Polish dentistry cost - 230 zl for one tooth cavity filling [99]

Because they seemed like a very knowledgeable, professional practice who knew what they were doing. As I said earlier, I trust my dentist in Ireland 110% and my guard wasn't up. :( Hindsight eh?

I'm sorry bud this happened to you.

Life / Things we enjoyed as kids in Poland [140]

I was fascinated with the show called "Sonda". I’ve heard that those two guys from the show died in a car accident. Someone told me they were drunk out of their minds when it happened.

I can't remember their faces, but I watch myth busters, so that's how I picture them in my mind now.

---

When I was 9 or so, my buddy and I found a bottle of vodka hidden in the bushes. We didn’t know what to do with it so we took it to a solder that was standing watch at the military training field (poligon).

We've asked him if there is anything that he could give us in exchange for it. He replied that he would let us shoot his gun....

We said: sweet!

My bud and I shot AK47 when we were 9. Lol…
Talking about children of war, yup I was a little havoc back than.

As soon as I had my appointment she just started drilling.

OMG, are you serious? Why didn't you get a second opinion? I’ve heard dentist do that even here in the US, just not on that scale. I’m sorry to say that but I think you got ripped off and damaged in the process bud.

Life / Differences in Polish, American and British mentality [237]

Puella,

I'm waiting on your explanation on why my father was stealing milk from his workplace back in Poland.

We were not starving in Poland so why would he keep stealing that fucken milk? Surely you gotta know the answer to this question. Just look at you, you know everything about Penn’s father.

Do you encourage people to steal?

Your question is without the necessary context. Let me ask question as well. Would you steal food if you were starving?

An American Cow ? nay ! you keep her !

so what do you want? What is your agenda?

if people wouldn't buy it, it wouldn't be a problem...

I think what she is saying is that everyone buys cheep Chinese crap but no one really thinks about children in Chinese sweatshops who make it.

Personally I don't care, I like being able to buy 60 roles of paper towels that are made in China for 10 bucks and wipe up my cat's puke off the floor with it, without sweating about the cost.

Poles, Americans and Brits have something in common, though... what do they think or do if a foreigner criticizes their presiden, government, life style etc?

take a wild guess.... :)

perhaps consider what the other person says?

American mentality IMHO: I have too much too lose if I get caught cheating or stealing.

I would agree that's true as well.

Polish-American mentality:
- I'm too proud to steal
- I'm too proud to cheat

A lot of Polish-Americans would associate stealing and cheating with the lowest form of survival. Resorting to those two is a sign of desperation.

No, no ...Your distinguished leaders are using our BOSS help to squeeze more monies from you american cattle !there a lot of slack to do the squeezing !Soon you will join our faithfully slim praetorian iron ranks, rejoice !

You're not making much sense. Do you wanna buy a cow or something?

Polish mentallity:
- looking for excuses for thefts
- looking for excuses for cheating ("schools demand too much unimportant knowledge, so I'm excused for cheating")

British mentallity:
- it is unacceptable to steal
- it is unacceptable to cheat

American mentallity:
- I'm too proud to steal
- I'm too proud to cheat

I would tend to agree with this one.

by becoming a collaborator

I'm not sure if you realize that word collaborator has a positive meaning in the US. I was confused why you kept saying that. I finally figured it out. lol.

So were you lying then or are you lying now? Or were you lying then and you are lying now?

As a side note: I worked with a Russian guy who used to design nukes before he came to the US. He escaped Russia in late 70's. Everyone understood that he wasn't directly responsible for what he had to do to over there in Russia. I'm not sure why you have issues with understanding that.

And now you wonder why Poles are considered as a nation of thieves...

We're not but some people still have that mentality. I grew up here but I understand that my father, as much as I’m ashamed of it, did what he had to do.

Who's right? ;)

I think you should go and live in North Korea with Iron. Come back in 5 years and tell us about your experiences.

No not communist. People like your father did it, regardless of their political views!

I think it's really presumptuous to say that is a system where everyone was stealing one person is guiltier than the other one.

For instance, my father was stealing milk from the factory where he worked at. He supposed to have only one bottle of milk per day but he took two. I'm sure other parents did similar things. I know it’s shameful but that was the system back than. Everyone did what they had to do to survive.

I'd rather be poor and work for the good of Poland.

In Warsaw, I’m mean Harry, you sound like a commie to me. Are you looking for redemption?

You attack other people and insist on forgetting about individual well being, and working hard for the common good of the mother Polska... Seriously?

You're not going to get any sympathy from people who lived in a system that you’re describing here. Trust me. We’re free now and we do what’s good for us now.

Get to work and make something out of yourself too you loser.

Poland is a really tiny nation in comparison to the massive amount of different cultures and societies living here in the US and abroad. Honestly we’re hardly recognized as a unique culture or mentality in this melting pot.

9 out of 10 when I just say that I’m Polish to someone they'll look at me confused wanting more explanation. Once this is established, people just accept it. They may pay attention to news about Poland because now they know someone that says is Polish. And that’s where it ends.

There are so little of us out there that it's not really difficult for a Polish person living abroad to spot another Polish.
To me personally it feels like looking in to a giant jelly bean jar and spotting white and red one in there. To us Polish, the white and red means something, to others it’s just another jelly bean.

You can pretend not to be Polish but the white and red mentality will give you away to other Polish. To others here in the US you’re just another white dude in a melting pot of many.

As a side note: it's so much more fun to mangle with all the jelly beans in the jar and not only those white and red ones.

It gives one a valuable perspective that can be used to ones advantage.

I would like to hear someone’s perspective from the British side.

Haha! Well, you seem to be stuck on the same forum, wasting your time in the exact same way, bored out of your skull, not too happy about a few things.

I'm glad you had your laugh. I'm actually enjoying this.

Personally, this forum helps me understand things about me. Seriously AJ i have nothing to prove to you. It's about me, me, me more than about you.

Sometimes if feels like I'm arguing with myself Polish-self here... if you know what i mean.

Maybe they really weren't Polish?

I'm pretty sure they were. I guess I'm trying to fix something that can't be fixed.

to come back and work to make Poland a better place, and for his failure to pay Polish taxes

Dope is that you?

Do you really believe that by paying taxes you're going to fix Poland? Do you really believe that by working hard you're going to accomplish something there? If so welcome to the club sheep. (I don't mean to be disrespectful but think about what you're saying bro)

well, I'm sure it's an excellent topic for another discussion.

@ Marynka
we're on the same page Marynka. I agree with you except the stigma part.

I've met Polish people at airports who denied being Polish in to my face. I was sitting next to a guy, who was coming back from Germany to Poland, who did the same thing. I know it's embarrassing to talk about it, nevertheless it is widely spread. Read some of the forums here closely and you'll understand what I'm talking about.

It's in our dna.

i agree nevertheless I'll continue on trying.
