News / Officials in Poland are hailing an upcoming visit by Donald Trump [720]

GMO food and trans fats are of much bigger concern. Thankfully, the EU keeps that garbage out of the union. Here in the US, industry lobbyists made it a First Amendment issue. We should not restrict people's right to kill themselves with trans fatty acids, and the Libertarians applauded...

News / Officials in Poland are hailing an upcoming visit by Donald Trump [720]

Bush and Trump however, who inherited a good economy, are piling up debts

It's always the same with the GOP: when the Democrats are in power they preach "fiscal responsibility", when they are in power themselves they are deficit-spending as if there's no tomorrow. These people favor predatory capitalism - like Libertarians of the worst kind. Poland would lose big time doing business with these vultures.

News / Officials in Poland are hailing an upcoming visit by Donald Trump [720]

He inherited a budget surplus from Clinton and managed to turn that into a massive deficit within a short period of time. His administration - the main culprits being Cheney and Bolton - was responsible for leading the country into an unnecessary war in Iraq which cost hundreds of thousands of lives and billions of dollars. At the end of his second term, Bush and the traitor GOP handed Obama a recession which almost turned into a depression. Bush was a simpleton, but (unlike Trump) he was at least a likable human being who handled 9/11 really well. The clown show that currently runs the country is a joke. Why would Poland be excited about a Trump visit? Can't wait to get shafted, or what?

News / Example of how EU wants to ruin Poland - thread for those who understend politics [10]

how one can save itself from EU

You still haven't understood what is going on in the US, Crow. Trump and his minions are on an "America first" trip, and they mean it. Poland and other countries in the EU will only have one choice: stand alone against the USA and be steamrolled into submission , or be part of a trading block which is larger than the US and protect your financial and political interests. Choose wisely.

Law / Payment of ZUS/ Income Tax - 'sole trading' business in Poland [27]

I don't think there's a single person on earth that doesn't regret at least one thing.

I wasn't talking about things like bad financial decisions and such, but about the more substantial ones like moving to another country, marrying someone or choosing a particular career path.

insurance

You're looking at it from an American perspective. Most other western countries have systems in place where people don't have to worry about health insurance or money once they retire.

Whenever I have a hangover or even just feel sluggish I hook myself up to an IV drip and its gone after a few minutes.

There's a much better "cure": when you have a hangover, just down a few more drinks. Headache gone. :)

like what? besides family?

The obvious. Reliable friends. A stable relationship. Being able to look back and not regretting a thing you've done. Staying healthy. Plus a million other things that money can't buy. The Germans have a saying which pretty much sums it up: "Your last (final) shirt has no pockets". Meaning, that you can't take your riches with you when you kick the bucket. Life is short, don't waste it.

History / How come Poles like Russians but not Germans? [216]

There's a hell of a lot of Polish disapora in places like the Ruhr

Many families of Polish descent in that region date back to pre-WW1 times. According to Wikipedia, Germany's Polonia is the second largest.

History / How come Poles like Russians but not Germans? [216]

I don't think many Poles have that arrogance so often shown by Germans.

You only think it's arrogance, but it's not. That was my point.

in my experience they are much louder than Americans

Only when they are drunk... :)

History / How come Poles like Russians but not Germans? [216]

Germans have the reputation for being arrogant and condescending to nearly EVERYBODY, not only the Poles!

Germans and Poles are very direct and don't beat around the bush like Anglos do. The perceived "arrogance" your are talking about is simply a cultural difference; nothing more. In Australia it's the Americans who are considered arrogant and loud. There goes your theory... :)

News / Polish-German Reconcilliation Seminar [491]

She wanted cheap workers to Put pressure on workforce.

Putting pressure on the German workforce with barely educated refugees and migrants from war-torn third world countries? How? There's absolutely zero demand in Germany for Nigerian scam artists, North African and Middle Eastern cattle herders, and Afghan farmers who grew poppies for local drug lords.

That is all there is to know to her decision.

True, but her actions are backfiring now and she gets blamed.

Genealogy / Dorschke Family and their ancestors from Upper Silesia [2]

Civil registration records for 1874 to 1906 are available in the Katowice State Archive, Racibórz branch. Order the birth records for your great grandparents to get more info about their parents. If you're lucky, these were born after 1873 and you'll be able to get back even one generation further. Some catholic church books survived the war and can be accessed at your local LDS family history center.

Genealogy / my Polish Grandfather in Hitler Youth? HOW? [65]

My Polish grandfather had the same forms and was forced to join the Nazi Youth

If your Polish grandfather had the same document as above (which is an identity card) and joined the Hitlerjugend, then he was an ethnic German/ Austrian. Wonder why part of his family had to flee to the US then...

Genealogy / Searching for Winskowski genealogy [6]

There's a Julius Winskowski (b. January 1857 in Germany), his wife Wanda (b. December 1860 in Germany), and their 5 kids listed in the 1900 census of Precinct 8, Baltimore City Ward 19, MD. Are those your folks? If yes, you should probably also take the names Winkowski (Winkowsky, Wittkowski) and Schultz into consideration.

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [900]

it was indeed a myth started by the communists and perpetuated

The question still stands why the UK didn't declare war on the USSR in 1939. Why did the Polish-British Common Defense Pact only deal with the Germans? I still believe there was a lot more British self-interest involved than the urge to defend Poland and fight for democracy - even if Doug doesn't like that idea... :)

Genealogy / Advice on tracing Prussian ancestors - Stettin area [10]

I don't think the siblings or the date of the parents' marriage were put in birth records

That's not how it works. You'll first need to find the birth record of your ancestor, which also names his or her parents. Once you have the date of birth, you go backward in time to look for the marriage of the parents. If your ancestor was the oldest child, the marriage is usually found the same year or a year earlier. If the ancestor is not the first child, you'll have to dig backwards through the records until you find the parent's wedding.

That's not correct. Most of the civil registration records as well as quite a few protestant church books are still in Poland.

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [900]

Which other group of people constantly bangs on and on and on about something that happened so long ago?

The Brits for example. Just read the Daily Fail: every day at least one article about WW2.

I have mad respect for Churchill.

Depends:

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [900]

you can't squirm away from the post you made regarding the economic power of a Nazi Germany, and that being the real reason for war.

What I said was something else, Doug: "When the Germans attacked Poland their opponents saw that as the final push to reestablish the old pre-WW1 power structure, so they had to react."

we had pledged to defend Poland

The question is not whether you pledged to do something or not. We are discussing why Britain pledged to help Poland only in case of a German aggression, and not a Russian one. What was the reasoning behind it; especially considering the fact that your country had appeased Hitler big time in Munich. Many historians say that WW2 was the continuation of WW1 after the Treaty of Versailles, and I tend to agree with that. The Great War was all about global influence and power, and so was WW2.

Australia didn't at first have to prosecute the war.

It's a little bit more complicated than that. Australia still hadn't ratified the 1931 Westminster Statute in 1939, so she lacked independent foreign policy. The Australian Prime Minister Robert Gordon Menzies acknowledged that by saying in September 1939, that as Britian was at war with Germany so was Australia. Australia only ratified the statute in 1942, but backdated to 1939.

2-1 is a majority. What was Churchill supposed to do?

Roosevelt and Churchill both agreed to Stalin's demands. Churchill was heavily criticized for that in Parliament.

what price was the UK paid by the USSR for Poland?

He was most likely cuckoo. ... The war wasn't about that, whatever some old buffer said at the time

That was the official position of Britain at that time. The "old buffer" didn't come up with that telegram all by himself. Nice try, though.

Look, I'm not saying that the British intentions weren't noble or what, but you simply can't deny the fact that there were many other factors involved (amongst them a lot of self interest) that led to the British declaration of war. If you disagree - explain Munich, explain why they had a secret protocol attached to the defense pact that said Britain will only come to the aid of Poland in case of a German aggression (but not a Soviet one).

From the same source as above:
"An answer given in the House of Commons in October 1939 revealed only that the Poles had "understood" that "the agreement should only cover the case of aggression by Germany."

The West didn't do sh1t for Poland

The problem is that there are actually two different versions of history out there: the Anglo-American one, and the continental European one. If you ask an American or a Brit, they will always proudly tell you how they "liberated" Europe. No mention of the millions of Russian soldiers who lost their lives, no mention of the allied bombing of French and Italian cities, no mention that they sold out to Stalin in Yalta. You'll have to ask a mainland European to get the other side of the story.

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [900]

But TheOther seems to think that the Second World Was was all about the world economy.

To further improve your superior British school education:

Sir William Seeds, British ambassador to Moscow, wrote in a secret telegram on 18 September 1939: "I do not myself see what advantage war with the Soviet Union would be to us..." and that "our war aims are not incompatible with reasonable settlement [in Poland] on ethnographic and cultural lines." Behind the scenes, the British felt there was a clear balance to be struck between 'morality' and traditional, old-fashioned, national self interest.

The Nazis were evil

No doubt.

Britain stood alone against them for quite some time.

Yeah, especially in Munich...

<sarcasm>
Never, ever, forget that. You should be ashamed, Dougpol1.
