News / Car theft in Warsaw (the most popular cars among car thieves in Poland) [54]

I would have thought Toyota to make it first on the list, seeing half of Warsaw driving in a Yaris...

I know there are "professional, steal to order" specialists in Canada. They are given a Make / Model to go and find for a fee. They are either exported to foreign lands, or stripped for parts. Typically they are high end cars. The smaller econo cars don't get the same preferential treatment. I am sure it is the same in PL. Target a car, jack it and send it off to Bialorus (or further afield) for a profit.

Travel / Attractions in Wrocław: a Must-See List [117]

you won`t want to see those places in real... :(:(:(:(

You could end up saving me a fortune, could afford more beer at some local rynek! But seriously, please do. It might serve to boost tourism in Wrocław.

PS. I think I should start a new thread about my 2011 vacation to show all those photos. :):):)

Right after you post the pics here... Please

Don`t treat the Aqua Park so lightly - kids will have fun. :):):)

Maybe you are right. I think you are whetting my appetite for the water park.

Love / POLISH GIRLFRIEND WONT PAY HER WAY [127]

Maybe she is saving the money so she can repay you with an all expense paid trip to Blackpool, or a beer fridge stocked with your favourite brew, for your own personal use...

You missed the bottom of the post. Bigos wasn't a requirement, it was like a bonus.

Does she need to know how to cook bigos?

That was number 6 on my Statement of Requirements.

News / Wal-Mart coming to Poland? [146]

It's a myth that Wal Mart devastates communities.

Tell that to the rust-belt communities...

News / Wal-Mart coming to Poland? [146]

a lot of times their food is stale

That's a pretty broad stroke of the brush. Some are and some aren't...

their prices are high. That's the real reason they cannot compete.

But why is their price high? They don't get the best prices because their volume / turnover is lower. When you are as large as Wal Mart, you get to beat the suppliers down in prices (because you are the biggest game in town) and you have a remarkably lean distribution system, minimizing freight costs to get the stuff to store. The mom and pop shops either do their own pick-up and delivery from a wholesaler (a middleman who also takes a cut!) or get it delivered at a premium. Those costs have to be borne by somebody.

With the Wal Mart model, you can operate on thin margins, because you have the sales volume.

Think about the amount of people they will hire in Poland too.

Hopefully it will make up for all the little mamo / tato shops they put out of business.

Travel / Which way from Poland to Croatia.... [30]

but on Natasha's people.

As Rodney King once said, "Why can't we all just get along?"

You are in Dubrovnik 10-11 of August or July?

Looks like maybe 9 or 10 of August at this point, it is still very fluid situation. We have a villa for a week near Trogir, but I need to be in Zagreb for the evening of 11 August. I will let you know as the dates get closer, and the plans firmer...

Travel / Attractions in Wrocław: a Must-See List [117]

No - it's in quite a rubbish location in terms of transport. There's a bus, but

And it seems they have a good deal on a second room....

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

I don't know what you find so funny about the riots- were you there?

Was I there? No. No desire to be there.

This is what your taxes are spent on Shawn......

I think the peaceful protests that were planned and carried out against (insert valliant cause here) were legitimate, a benefit to society, and an exemplary show of democratic spirit and principles. I consider it a shame that too many of these noble protests were infiltrated and ruined by a bunch of shyte disturbing so-called "anarchists". They truly bring down any cause they choose to infiltrate.

Eliminate these "anarchists" and save how many tax dollars?

Now, I can't say I was in favour of the million dollar fake lake, or the pork barrel spending in the Muskoka region that the "benefits" of which no visiting dignitary ever got to see....

dancing partner, not a date. Have you ever taken dancing lessons? Sheesh.......

White men can't dance? I've got two left feet ;-)

Food / Expats' Polish food favourites [140]

I'm not sure we're talking about Polish food

So what qualifies a food as "uniquely Polish"? Is it the fact that the ingredients are to be found in no other place in the world? Is it in the blend of ingredients, say a particular spice or seasoning? Is it the manner in which it is prepared (fried / grilled / boiled or a combination of all three)?? Does it really need to be uniquely Polish, or can it be because of a long tradition of eating it throughout a region and across nations?

have you ever tried wild boar roast ?

Honestly? No. Is it that unique of a flavour? More gamey?
