Travel / Any recommendations for Krakow entertainment [12]

You will either get a shot of Tom special bottle behind the bar or you will get my drink of Jamesons whisky with an ice cream float ;)

But I will be cautious as you cooked a cat once and I am suspicious of your tastes now.

But I never tasted it myself though :D

I'd recommend Nic Nowego which is a modern Irish pub (it's at Św. Krzyża 15 street).

Good call and while you are there ask Tom for a Davidek drink ;)

You most likely won't be dancing there, but the rest what you're seeking is there.

Have you never been on the bar dancing to Gary Glitters "my gang" ? :D

You could also pop into the Irish Arms bar, they have live gigs on during the weekend. Maurice is an auld fart too ;)

For **** sake people, they are just some pics that I liked because they showed another side to Warsaw than what you would find in any other tourist book or newspaper article about the city.

If you all can't just appreciate them or not is besides the point, the photos were taken to inspire whatever feelings you connect with them.

Leave the petty sh1t out or I'll just ask the mods to close my thread.

Why can`t I find in British or American newspapers articles portraying Warsaw as a glamourous city , but instead I always see sad?

Mainly because newspaper articles aren't there to have a biased opinion on "look how great Warsaw is".
But you couldn't have looked too hard because The Guardian has a whole section dedicated to guardian.co.uk/travel/warsaw

How people from distant places can have a positive view about Poland this way ?

I don't think if all the news was bad then people would be flocking to Poland for their holidays.

I don't get why you seem to want to ignore the problems that may exist in Warsaw.

Another article about Warsaw: guardian.co.uk/music/2011/apr/03/new-europe-poland-clubs

Every city has it's problems, areas that are still in poverty ect. Unless it's reported then no one is going to change that.

Anyway these photos seem to have done the job.

Why tell them a story not the reality ?

Cos it is also a reality, why only see things from one perspective. I can bet that most newspaper articles will talk about the brighter side of Poland, but I quite like to see the other truer sides too. Not everything in Poland is rosy, not all medieval churches and tall towers, try going to the tri-cities, for most people they would say that the area is a ******** full of unhappy people, the reality is that yes they are industrial cities and people are over worked for not much money, but you can find the other side too.

And it's got all of us debating it, so he might not be as bad as we think.

Meaning sad, very sad?

I don't find many things in life sad, I mean in my kind of work I have learnt not to let other peoples situations get to me, the majority were yes i guess, but every now and again you'd find something that could be inspiring.

The end of commy life brought about a lot of Krk's homeless.

Whats so special about polish poor people , whats so unique about them ah?

Unique because they live in a city that is flaunted as a modern metropolis. They are the history of the city because they haven't changed much over the years. That's where you find your story, the story not published in most books.

In Krk as a bit of a project me and my friend used to take photos of the local homeless people and interview them to hear their stories. We were going to publish it one day....but it fell off the radar as with most bright ideas. Think I may still have some of the pics and some of the stories were fascinating.

The bad pictures are not balanced by prettier ones

They don't need to be, he is showing a story of another side of Warsaw. One that is not being told so often maybe.

This is not a place of starving homeless . Warsaw is a town with more than a hundred of higher educational institutions

Nobody, even the photographer is suggesting that Warsaw is a flee-market town. I don't think you understand clearly the idea of photojournalism.
He is telling a story, not a balanced view. He is telling the story of the more deprived areas of Warsaw, maybe what he is trying to highlight is that fact that even with Warsaw becoming a more modern city, there is still areas that have been left behind.

Where are the districts of office buildings which look like the the best in the world with outstanging architecture .

For the same reason as this, Where are the poorer districts and industrial areas in the tourist books?

Love / Polish girls' attitude towards different kinds of sex [88]

My experiences might be unique, but the few Polish girls that I have been intimate with all seem to have a real liking for anal sex.

I don't feel ofended or whatever, just it makes me laugh when people from rich countries are excited about visiting slums... people have short memories, don't they?

Hardly, I was brought up in the crime and murder capital of Europe. In probably it's most notorious schemes. First thing I said to my gf when I moved to Nowa Huta (first time ive ever been to Poland) was how great the place looked.....a look of shock came across her and her parents faces.

The pictures, IMHO, are just... amateur-looking.

Every Pole an expert of photography :D There is a reason why he is at the top of his game.

Why take the picture then? And then another, and another? I'm all for realism, but this is not realism, it's "uglyfication" ;-)

Why not? No one has given me any clear reason not to apart from moaning that it makes Warsaw look bad, which it neither does nor does it portray Warsaw as a some kind of paradise.

I haven`t got the title of his article

They were just a group of pics, there wasn't an article to go with them from my knowledge. But they come under the New Europe series.

Motropolitan of Warsaw is more than 3 milion so who cares if 100 people go to a milk bar or if there are some old buildings which need to be renovated .

Because there is still a story to be told, you can't just say there are 100 people only in Warsaw that live poor lives. Even well off people may still use the milk bars, in Krk a lot of students also did. But there must be a reason why he chose to take a photo of older people eating there...no?

Regarding who cares about the older buildings, I'm guessing most of the residents who live in those districts. Most of Warsawians(sic) are pretty well off, but there are some problem areas that still need to be addressed. Hiding them from the world does no good.

The building at Próżna street is about to be rebuild , like the rest of the street ( this one is the last to be finished ) .

Exactly, so why not show the past Warsaw? If this the last building to be renovated then it's an even better photo as it holds the story of how this area used to be.

One of my friends who also is a photographer from Warsaw says he gets fed up of the white washing of photos used in magazines and article in the city. That the place is full of rubble and tacky advertising, though he does recognise the fact that the city is going through a transitional period.

I think it's a shame that some people in Warsaw feel ashamed of the poorer districts and have the need to protest when someone chooses to highlight the area. Maybe by highlighting the poorer areas he is choosing to show the difference in how the city is changing.

Point being though, is that how the scene looked at the time? Why change something to make it look less drab if the actual scene is drab and dull in the first place.

Why did he show old people , rather poor , some looking like homeless or parts of the city with rubbish on the soil , partially without pavement ?

Because like any city in the world, another photo collection of all the historical and touristy place are ten a dozen. For example some of the more interesting places in Glasgow are the poorer districts, they speak volumes from where the city has come from.

This is not Warsaw its just his vision

That's the point is it not?

entirely distorted

That's your opinion.

Why didn`t he show Warsaw in a more normal way , not taking sides , showing young , smiling people instead of old and grim.

Because he wasn't taking the pics to put them into a tourist book. He was taking the pics to show the other side of Warsaw.

We don`t dine out there !

But some still do.

I could go to London and make the same photo session of poor suburbs and show to Polish readers how London looks like . Would it be fair ?

No, because he is not trying to portray Warsaw as a poor city. He is just showing some parts that maybe don't get a mention in most books. Praga being case and point, how many people actually know about that part of the city. Same as Krakow, not many people knew about Nowa Huta in the past but now it's becoming more and more famous with tourists.

i don't think much of the piccys, to be honest.

I don't think he was attempting to glamourise Warsaw but rather show a more truthful portrayal.
