USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

Polonian voters in the US overwhelmingly cast their ballots for Jarosław Kaczyński (70%)

So young Poles in Polonia don't laugh at Kaczynski (as they do in Poland)?

Life / Warsaw public transport is not so bad at all [14]

In all cities in the world people complain about the public transport system.

Most cities in PL have rather good public transport. And cheap.

Travel / Traveling to Poland from Chicago next month! Few questions. [11]

Next we are going up to Trojmiasto.. mainly Gdansk.

Summer nights in Sopot are the best. Start at the beach and then go to one of the night clubs or pubs. Or just stroll around. It's great!

A special town, with a special summer atmosphere. You will not get disappointed.

And it's very close to Gdansk.

News / Majority of Poland's kids physically unfit, claims PPA. [41]

People don't eat anymore in the States than they used to

If you count the calories, they eat more for sure.

And the gain/loss balance of calories is severely disturbed. E.g. when people drive car to their friend 300 meters from their home.

Travel / Praga, Warsaw - looking for some hippish cafes [15]

I've read in most places that Praga is to be avoided. But, I've read elsewhere that Praga has an emerging club scene.

Both statements are true. Check it out. But take a taxi, it's cheap.

You shouldn't walk around in Praga at night if you don't know the place, and know what kind of people you are likely to find where.

News / Majority of Poland's kids physically unfit, claims PPA. [41]

I've heard that the current generation in the US is the first generation that will live shorter than the generation before

It's true.

In many parts of the world people starve to death. In other parts of the world people are literary eating themselves to death.

Over 90% of Polish children suffer from various developmental defects and ailments

Not true. I just had a med school rotation in the pediatric hospital.

Life / Anyone else suffering from mosquito bites in Poland? [52]

I'm actually quite allergic to mozzies

You can take an 1 antihistamine tablet (2nd generation) daily to reduce they symptoms of the bites.

Should be taken before you get the bites.

Language / 'jestem po weselu' [8]

'jestem po weselu'

Lit. I'm after a/the wedding.

Is this colloquial or standard Polish?

Rather colloquial.

Can this structure always replace a past tense?

No. In one way it can be a substitute for past tense. But be careful with it. It doesn't work if you want to express more complex sentences.

Just think of it as "I'm after X". Even if it doesn't make sense in English.

Also note that in a Polish translation the 2 following sentence are identical, and mean exactly the same:
1. I've been to a wedding
2. I was on a wedding

Travel / Public Transportation in Poland [30]

Bus 175 stops at the Central Station. And then it drives toward the Old Town (via very fashionable streets like Nowy Świat and Krakowskie Przedmieście).

Travel / Public Transportation in Poland [30]

Warschau, Breslau

Some Poles consider this very offensive. For historical reasons, not because they necessarily dislike Germans in general.

Love / Inside polish women's psychology and mind [109]

I would imagine Polish women are going through a similar revolution (albeit in a v minor way) as Western Europe in the 60s/70s.

Earlier it was the man's job to get all the money the family needed, and the woman's job to take care of everything at home.

These days many Polish women work full-time. So the balance of work at home has changed a little. But the basic pattern is still the same.

Travel / Public Transportation in Poland [30]

In Warsaw (and most other cities):

A normal ticket last from you get on the first bus until you get off it the first time. You can't change bus on this ticket. It costs about 2,50 zl.

Then there are also tickets 20-minutes, 30-minutes etc. Where you can make as many changes as you want during this time. The price is usually also around 2-4 zl depending on how long it lasts.

To the city from airport take bus 175 outside airport. It takes about half an hour to the central station. You can buy a "normal" ticket (2,5 zl). Taxi is about 30 zl on taxameter. But taxidrivers inside the airport try to charge you like 60 zl.

Language / Post Polish slang phrases here! [37]

"ja pierdziu"

what does it mean?

As said, a light version of 'oh fuck'.

Many Polish words can be translated as English 'fuck'.

Language / When do you use 'się'? And what does it mean? [37]

You really have to think outside of the box

When you understand the structures and principles of Polish, it's actually a rather logical language.

Study / preparatory Polish language courses [12]

I know one person (who spoke just a little Polish before), he did some kind of preparation course to improve his Polish. I guess it was about 9 months.

Now he studies dentistry successfully in Polish language. So probably he improved his Polish a lot during this course.

Life / Bringing my best American friend to Poland. [7]

Just talk with everyone who would be involved in this project. Then you will soon know whether it's possible or not.

Most of it depends on your friend and his family. If they want/allow this.

Polish people in general don't have anything against Americans.

Life / HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE POLAND IN 2010? [84]

Right now Poland has one of the best economies in EU. Last year Poland had the highest BNP-growth in Europe.

One of the reasons is that Poland is one of the biggest (or the biggest now?) netto-receiver of money from other EU-countries.

EU invest extremely much money in Poland.

Language / A little Polish grammar. Masculine, animate objects. [64]

Exactly. Personal masc nouns = only male humans

Male humans have special endings that differ from normal animate nouns (non-human).

When you take it one step further it gets confusing, I agree.

Language / Nazwy mieszkanców - the names of a city/country residents in Polish [14]

And one more question, what about the -ski ending? Do we use it only for the noble names, or can we use it in usual situations (np. warszawski... ?)? And what about the -ak ending, when do we use it?

ski-words are common adjectives (declined as other adjectives in all genders and cases).

Nominative case:
-ski (masc.)
-ska (fem.)
-skie (neutr. and plural)

Uniwersytet Warszawski (masc)
Ulica Warszawska (fem.)
Augustowskie noce (plural) [an old famous song]

I guess you know adjective endings in the other cases.
E.g. Mieszkam na ulicy Warszawskiej (locative case of feminine gender)
