Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

There was a male version of this custom, I believe Katarzynki on Saint Catherine Eve but I'm not sure. Andrzejki are still practised while Katarzynki are almost forgotten

Men gave up. It doesn't matter what kind of beauty will bring the horror on their heads.

What about sign?

Food / Nothing better than skwarki! [19]

dirt-poor...be able to eat 'salo z salom'

Well, dirt-poor peasants are lazy. The ones with dreams of this kind usually live the dream and have salo. You have, probably, heard a song about salo ;)

...
Of course, salo and shkwarki are popular in Ukraine since times unknown. There are even monuments to a pig in several cities :)
I read somewhere that pigs were the animals who saved people in Ukraine during the invasion of Mongol hordes who didn't approach the yards where pigs grew and considered people eating pigs unclean and repugnant and therefore, kept themselves away.

Usually it's eaten with bread.

It depends on your taste preferences. I like it salted, peppered and slightly frozen with or without bread (100 grams is essential here ;). Smaletz, which is shared greatly in our nations as you know, is eaten usually with garlics rubbed-in rye bread and sprinkled with salt...Yummii!

So, Polonius, I agree with the title of your post 100% :)

Stop it - you merciless torturer! :) I recently made shkwarki - big fat crunchy juicy seductively fluffy and so amorously delicious chunks of heaven that smell like ocean's breeze after a spring rain with aroma of paradise magnolia....

Love / 'Battered husbands' - still a taboo subject in Poland [387]

I agree with Zimmy on practically all his statements. Women are as violent as men, but our judicial and social systems are deeply biased in favor of women. I know many cases and many people who went through hell with women with no consequences for the latter. Men's fault is that they usually remain silent as it is embarrassing to admit being beaten by your wife. These men have an honor and would not hit a woman even if she is crazy, but even self-defense is undertaken as battering by some women and reported to police. Just a simple case: Guy is beaten by his wife defends himself by holding her arms. Since women are "princesses" they get easily bruised and this is presented by them as battery. This is wrong. Battery is when you are missing teeth or not able to see in one eye - this is battery. Bruises on bicepses or wrists is a sign that a woman is a guilty side. Police doesn't take it as an evidence of such.

Why? If a former spouse earns $500K a year and the other earns $40K, looks after the kids, can't get a better job because the skill set is lacking after spending so much time looking after the kids during the marriage (etc) shouldn't that spouse assist the other?

Agree.

Just women eh? What about men who do the same? Aren't costs orders against the 'perjuring' party sufficient?

Yes, just women. Have you ever seen a psycho-man lying to be beaten by a wife?!

Automatically and enshrined in legislation or subject to what is in the child's best interests?

Automatically. But in the course of the process any one side can get 100% custody over a child if and only if either of its parents can cause danger to the safety of the child: drugs, gang's involvement, etc. But either father or mother should be allowed normal parental visitations no matter what are their past, present or future (usually supervised). From what I know women get preferential treatment of lawa as a custodial parent. This is wrong.

Why you blame leaders in everything? Submarine sunk - it is Putin, summer heat and fires - it is Medvedev whom you blame?

Read my post like you are willing to understand English and then try not to turn their meaning around.

mmm, Ukranians? What is this? Is it people who lives "на Украине"?

It is: "Who are they?" and they were Ukrainians as an ethnic group.
Here is an article I have recently read about Holodomor. The full you may read from the link I provided below; the second is Google translation:

In addition to the arguments being made by prominent lawyers, I would still stay on the facts, which shun those who deny the special swing famine in Ukraine. In particular - the Russian part of Ukrainian historians and politicians stresses: famine swept the entire USSR, and from it equally affected all nations. Of course, you can not deny the criminal nature of the Stalinist regime, and that victims were most people who lived in the communist empire. It is known that from hunger died and representatives of other nations. However, the scale of losses in various nations differ significantly. It's enough to analyze the data that became available recently obtained by the Soviet census of 1926 and 1937. If the number of Russians within the Soviet Union during these eleven years INCREASED by 20%, Ukrainians DECREASED by 15% (from 31 to 26 million). Out of ten most numerous peoples of the USSR Kazakhs too suffered huge population losses - 28%.They also have every reason to raise the issue of genocide, organized by Moscow.

If you accept the view that equally affected all nations, it is not clear why the borders were blocked between Russia and Ukraine, who were in one state. There are many documented recollections of eyewitnesses who described the ban to leave the famine affected areas and move to Russia, where the situation was not good, but hunger is not reached this level. Nowadays there is discovered directive letter of 22 January 1933, prepared personally by Stalin, in which he ordered to prevent a massive exodus of peasants from Ukraine and Kuban (region in Russian Federation heavily populated by Ukrainians since XVII-XVIII centuries) in other regions of the USSR. Pursuant to this document to give local leaders have denied any travel documents for the peasants, however, setting the curtains on the railway and water transport, as well as taking control of soil roads.

Without the ability to travel outside Ukraine, people roamed this country. This is how a foreign communist who visited Ukraine while the territory was covered by the famine: "Dirty crowds filling station, heaps of men, women and children, waiting for God knows what train. They are chased away, but they return without having neither money nor tickets. They sit down at any train which stops and remain there until they are thrown out. They are silent and passive. Where are they heading? Just in search of bread, potatoes or work in factories ... Bread - this is a great driving force of people ... "

Hungry villagers tried to reach any cities, but found no salvation there. On the streets you can see terrifying scene. People, as usual, hurried on their cases, and among them, on the ground, crawled children and adults, enfeebled by hunger. One witness for the commission of US Congress told about this episode, which was, incidentally, in Enakievo: "Me and my brother go and we look: under the fence is a woman. She is half-recumbent, half-sitting.. Dead. We approached - and saw her baby. The woman is dead and baby alive. And she was so up to one year. Maybe a year, maybe a little less, maybe a little more. And it pulled in her mother's breast and sucks. But its mother is dead. And my brother and I, we were crying ...We feel sorry for the child because it does not know. Sucks and does not understand that there is nothing inside. So here goes sanitary machine that picks up the dead bodies. And they always went there because a lot of corpses lying. They grabbed, the two men, the dead women by her feet and child and threw both where the corses lie. They drove away with the woman and a alive kid and the rest bodies to the common ditch at the cemetary."

zaxid.net/article/73823/

So having the richest lands in the former Soviet Union, Ukraine's population decreaded 15% in 1926-37 interwar period, while Russians increased 20%. It is 6 million people!!! The number is still worse - it reaches 10 million offset by births of newborn.

I'm sure can relate to it a lot

Thanks a lot, MediaWatch. There were different time and those who opposed the forceful collectivization or the communist regime in general were tortured and executed. The problem doesn't lie why people lost the spirit to rebel (they were hungered, demoralized, turned into zombies by systematic destruction of human in humans). The problem for me lies in the fact that we are living 70 years after these horrors occurred and there are people like ConstiantineK who have read and know what happened there, but whose shallow worthlessness pretends to be daring, bold or maybe, even sickly funny by making retarded comments of the kind.

What though many men had to die to achieve these results?

Here are just a blink of the results:
Russian Federation which occupies 1/9th of the dry land and flies into cosmos doesn't have masks (10 cents a piece) to give to its dying from fires and smoke citizens. Country which is able to flood the world with oil doesn't have enough to gas its helicopters and planes to extinguish the fire which destroys its homes; country, which became so "advanced" because of Stalin that it let die its 122 navy soldiers because of lack of the equipment to pull the submarine out and so proud not to ask a tiny Norway for help which could have saved them and which is 100 times more advanced, civilized and no doubt proud - because it really has a lot to proud of. People who pretend like you that Stalin changed something for their country are simply lazy, betraying, worthless piece of scum which haven't died under his regime just because of their nature - being a scum. Stalin liked thoughless, brainless, scum-looking and thinking homo sovetici which (not who!) still bog down most of the former republics of the Soviet Union.

He was genius.

How can one call a genius someone who caused starvation of 10,000,000 Ukrainians, signed execution of 41,000 people personally, ordered execution of 22,000 Polish military elite, destroyed the SU's the highest military command in 1937-38, caused death of million soldiers on the battlefields, built hudreds Gulags and extermination camps in Siberia...............???????

Actually it is hard to understand

Is it? When spanking the monkey everyone understand everything perfectly, but when other people's emotions and identities are involved we become dumb. Why is that?

try to stay calm

I am very calm. I put exclamation marks as insults towards lack of sanity ;)

And the same for bi's... What, were they born only partly gay?

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is this so hard to understand???? Bi's like both sexes to a person specific degree. It doesn't mean 50/50, it may be 10/90, 30/70, 60/40,....,28/72 or 99/1. There is no absolute things in the world, nothing is mathematically perfect. People are different; they are not manufactued and cut to the same size and brain capacity. Can you measure love? Can you measure pleasure? Can you say about yourself: "I am 100 percent intelligent or 100% stupid"? No. Because in some things you may be good, but at others - not. What, were you born only partly intelligent? Of course, you were. Are you abnormal? No, because there is no norm as such.

Science is now closing in on finding what could be called the "gay gene", an abnormality, a genetic flaw

How do you make synonims from those two words? Can I say the opposite and be, thus, correct: straightness, normality, genetic perfection? I cannot, because it is not true. They won't find the gene for gayness, as there is no genes for love, whatever sex it is directed to. But let us pay those scientists who think like you that this is a disease and waste tax-payers money on preposterous assumptions.

Of course I am. Do you believe that while masturbating I think about warming milk at 3 am? ;) Trust me, I don't. The same can be said about the same sex relations, about heterosexual moments of intimacy with condoms, about penguins in Germany, about prisoners in jails,...In any of these cases none is interested in procreation.

really the cave man in us is unconsciously thinking

I am just wondering how you know what a caveman was thinking? What happened evolutionwise to make us stop thinking those alleged thoughts and why we permitted this abnormality of yours to dominate our brain and not think about kids when we see a hot chick?

Life / Any treatment centres for homos in Poland? [455]

If homosexuality is not a function of the mind or of the body (genes) then where does it come from?

I have never doubted homo/heterosexualities origin and here I completely agree with you.

the very nature of life itself, whereby one of the basic conditions is procreation and perpetuation of the species.

Says who??? Do you personally live to procreate? Are you really interested in what will happen to your species in the future? Do you pray at night saying: "God, please, save our species"? Nature of life - to be happy, to realize oneself to the fullness. Yes, we procreate and this way continue our species. Is there a constitution somewhere written by the goddess Evolution saying: "This is the way you, homo sapiens and penguins, will live by"? No. Some want to procreate, some don't. Some enjoy waking up at 3 am to warm the milk and then cry on a shoulder that they cannot take it anymore and some enjoy the stars in the sky making love to a partner who will never cause him wake up at 3 am. Are people who are not interested in ever having kids abnormal? Are people who interested in their own happiness and satisfaction abnormal as compared to those waking up at 3 am in hope that our species will be alive in the future?

History / Should HMG compensate Poland and/or Polish veterans? [90]

Where did you read that?

In my post #73 I mentioned some of your quotes and highlighted some points which seem to be self-explanatory. It is surprising to imagine Hitler trusting more to Soviets than to Poles (I don't judge him, since I wouldn't trust either), but he would have made a better choice in making Poland on his side. And I don't grasp how it was impossible. He simply underestimated Soviets. What was happening from the first signing of pact between Germany and Poland in 1934 that made him so unsure and more eager to get rid of the wall between him and Soviets, making enemies on the occupied territories and exposing his army to another threat, not only internal (on occupied lands), but also of the inevitable border attack from Soviets?

History / Should HMG compensate Poland and/or Polish veterans? [90]

well not for them but for their own goals

Yep.

The Brits where in Greece...

How can you control where the British are if the ocean is all around Europe? :) No matter what you do, you won't cover all the beaches of Europe?

That's why there had been other options open to a smarter polish government thant those which they actually took.

But as you might see from the highlighted points from your quotes, Hitler would do it anyway. Whether they sign a pact or not, it just changed his tactics in direction of attack, but not of eventual result, which was to be the same - whole Europe. Poland had;) a big mouth, but I would doubt it would really attack Germany, especially after the latter attached Austria to itself and took a chunk of industrial Czechoslovakia. Hitler just wanted the conquest no matter what.

Holland is on the way to France?

After Maginot line was built - yes ;)

Miedzymorze was a great idea :)

Intermarum was a plan, pursued after World War I by Józef Piłsudski, for a federation, under Poland's aegis

If not these "aegis" and other pretentious moves, it would have changed a lot of European history, no doubt.

History / Should HMG compensate Poland and/or Polish veterans? [90]

" Quarrels with Poland should be avoided. Should Poland however adopt a threatening attitude towards Germany, " a final settlement " will be necessary, notwithstanding the pact with Poland. The aim is then to destroy Polish military strength, and to create in the East a situation which satisfies the requirements of defence.

It looks like he knew that he would invade Poland since even the pact, undesirable as it was, was only a step before the destruction of Polish army. He obviously doesn't lie when he said:

I had already made this decision in the Spring, but I thought that I would first turn against the West

But did he really believed in Poland attacking Germany? If there were so many talks about it, what Polish said to cause him distrust leaving his back exposed to such possibility?

..he would had cuddled up to "subhuman slavs" if they would not hinder him in his quest against Stalin!

I don't think Slavs were in any love with stalin and Russians in general. Hitler just wanted to be second Napoleon and he became one with the same consequences. His St. Helene became a bunker. Come on, invasion of Greece??? What the hell is that? It reminds me of Napoleon's invasion of Egypt - purposeless conquest with no real support, which looked like art-caused than for any other reason. I am in no way military expert - I know how attack a fridge though ;) - but Hitler was not interested in Slav's support whatsoever. It seemed that he was just too arrogant if he thought of attacking Soviets alone while chunk of his army was enjoying pyramids and Greek statues and temples. Like, what's wrong with him? I am not surprised there were so many attempts to kill him by his own army - megalomaniac in its purest form.

History / Should HMG compensate Poland and/or Polish veterans? [90]

The eventual clash between Hitler and Stalin would had come eventually...

Not necessarily. Hitler wasn't Napoleon who just went after what he wanted. His catious conquerings of Europe had a good reason. Germany was exposed from all sides and before doing anything it had to go through Austrian Anshluss and Munich conference to feel Europe out whether it would be eager to defend itself as one force against Germany's expansion. He waited to attack Norway and the rest of Western Europe after Poland. Why? How many months? 7-9? I am not sure. Soviet Union was defeated by Finland like a bunch of pussies. Soviets lost 125,000 people, the Fins - about 23,000. I am not mentioning military arsenal. If Poland took a role of a wise politician and talked around a bit instead of boasting to attack Germany whenever it wants, many things could have gone differently. Soviets had one of the least attack-retreat responsive armies. If it was ever winning, it was by numbers, but even that didn't help against Finland. What would be if Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Czechoslovakia, Bielorus were sticking together? Germany and Soviets would think of attacking in a distant future, maybe, when neither sickly hitler, nor paranoic stalin would be in existance any more.

He was a head of state and no one had any idea that concentration camp are operational already.

It wasn't the reason since Polish concentration camp Bereza Kartuska was already operational in 1934 when Pilsudski was still alive.

PS: Dealing with Hitler and Stalin would had been the top priority of any country in Polands dire situation

I wouldn't say so. The huge mistake of Poland was the most retarded foreign policy towards its neighbors who were not going ever to attack it. Instead of working out some plans with those countries for the benefit of common defense. Stalin would have never dared to do what he did, eliminating millions of people, neither Hitler if he saw common front from so many nations. Poland chose to attack everyone around: Ukraine, Lithuania, Czechs, Slovaks. Why? Because of the 15th century fabules for kids?

Just found some pre-war sentiment in Poland:

As a matter of fact, already after the First World War Poland drove far more than a million Germans out of West Prussia and Upper Silesia, denounced the minority protection agreement imposed by the League of Nations, closed German schools and cultural institutions in large numbers and forbade German newspapers

patriot.dk/poland.html

From what I am used to hear on PF nothing really changed, unfortunately.
