Life / My first impressions of Poland, long time ago [37]

What you must bear in mind, Zeti, and I've stressed it several times is that I live in Gliwice. Gliwice is not Kraków, Wrocław or any other big city over 400,000 people. I'm not saying it is Poland that is boring. Gliwice sorts are overly conservative and that must be borne in mind.

UK, Ireland / Why English do not like Polish? [417]

Hehehe, typical old-style Englishman :) :) And a goodnight to you to, old chap :) English gentlemen are thoroughly likeable sorts, mainly in the sphere of music :)

Some were less positive, yes, but any sane person would say the same. Some Poles are masters of delusion. They trick or are conditioned into believing absolute drivel about their country. Still, let them be! I prefer to see the good sides of things and there are many.

My first impressions were positive in the main but time changes things. I'm still fairly positive but some here could make watching potatoes grow appear exciting.

I thought Fresians were cows, A J ;) ;)

It was not about Britons, Paul, but English folk.

Feedback / The image of Poland according to PolishForums [90]

Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo :) :) It's just as Admin wanted it to be. People are here in life to discuss their experiences for the benefit of others. Yes, some exaggerate and some troll but we have to use our judgement and come to the right conclusion.

Language / What do you like in Polish language? [70]

Yeah, a bit like when I speak Polish or Japanese to my parents. They get lost when I start, really. Polish has that great potential for disastrous embarrassment with cases. I have largely avoided that but I'm not gonna get complacent in my old age :)

Co Ty godosz? Ile mosz lot? I play footie with a guy from Ruda Śląska and he seems to be understood only by himself. I bet he even foxes himself on occasion :) Grumy grumy :)

Love / ARE POLISH WOMEN CATTY...? [75]

I've seen cattiness here to a significant extent but it tends to be a certain type. The older women who work in shops either tend to be passive or mildly participative workers and not catty. Quite pleasant as opposed to their elderly customers. Some are just trying out their boss impersonations for the job they will never have :)

Keep running for 'princess' status, ladies, you do it all so well :)

Love / How to find an English speaking boyfriend in Poland [110]

Davie, it's one big pressure valve ;) ;)

Katowice does have its fair share of foreigners. Try the language schools which might have suggestions for expat bars. Also, it's moving away from summer but try ul.Stawowa which is the main street connecting the station to EMPIK. Foreigners can be found there.

Dave answered beautifully and succinctly :)

Life / My own thoughts about life in Poland (have lived here for two years) [133]

Exactly! The minimum wage guff is such a slap in the face. It's rubbing salt in the wounds to people that don't get it. People from Warsaw and Kraków should try and see how some people here live.

Why should bankers and other government ministers be allowed to hike up prices while so many were finding it hard enough as it was? Come on, time to give people a good day's pay for a good day's work here and recognise that they often do more good than those pathetic specimens on telephone number salaries.

Love / How to find an English speaking boyfriend in Poland [110]

There is a bar down the stairs from the station and 3-4 mins off to the left, I can't remember the name. There is a charismatic American that goes there. My friend lives in Katowice and he is happy enough with the options there.

Having fun isn't allowed when married, Zeti. Besides, many don't look like they are having fun here anyway.

I teach people, southern, not have my way with them like you do ;) Nor do I go out drinking and look, why would I?

I don't go in for the Skype thing either.

To the OP, it depends where you are. Going to expat bars is your best bet but you should live in a city for that.

News / Anger after Poland left out of EU ambassador team [38]

The EU is marching off down the road to spiritual bankruptcy. Any more of that nonsense and they will implode. Tusk and Kommie need to learn that William Wallace (Mel Gibson) and his men were not showing their butts so that others could have their way with them ;) ;) They got the wrong end of the stick on that one :)

As I was saying, moć and mocz are similar. Some sounds I have a problem with :)

Moć is urine if I'm not mistaken ;)

Moc is power/strength

USA, Canada / Polish Fighter Tomasz Adamek vs Michael Grant WAR [20]

I thought he was a hot shot (before the fight) who would not let up but he threw lazy jabs and just looked disinterested. Adamek was picking points off of him left, right and centre.

Genealogy / searching for family "Wasilewska" [5]

You might want to see if the football player, Marcin Wasilewski, has a website. He was the player that had his leg broken in rather vicious fashion by a careless idiot. He might be a good bet to ask.

Life / My own thoughts about life in Poland (have lived here for two years) [133]

You have to buy special cleaners like I do. The smells come out, as do the stains.

Scottishness = sensible? I agree :) Why pay too much for clothes? I get designer label stuff and some other super non-designer stuff from Lumpeks. Life costs enough without wasting money.

Sunburn, yes. No strokes :)

I like the realism of the Poles. They may talk big figures but they know what is attainable and what isn't in their country.

Poland has really come a long way in 20 years. You can buy essential things for cheap and you just need to look around. Veggie stalls and shops like Lumpeks are my favourite. I liked Kurt Cobain's philosophy. He was super wealthy but shopped in cheap, 2nd-hand places. I've bought most of my clothes from there and I'm never disappointed.

USA, Canada / Polish Fighter Tomasz Adamek vs Michael Grant WAR [20]

It was a little boring as Grant tried nothing. The only time he showed anything of note was in the last round in desperation. I hate fighters that do that. He clearly had sth left in the tank so why not throw it down in the first few rounds?
