History / Battle of Grunwald 1410 The biggest medieval battle. Germans smashed. [174]

Occupying power wound not allow anything that would cause Polish insurrection and nationalism and desire for a free country

And that has to do with the Serbs exactly what?
Did the occupying powers scratch out the Poles from the Battle? Now that would understandable (if stupid) but I doubt that.
The facts of this historical event was never up for scratching or denying...

Even your Sienkiewicz made a living out of writing books denigrating the Germans and the Teutonic Knights...and he lived in partition Poland. Doesn't look like overt opression to me!

You for sure want to be the Serbs to be there....for that you point to a romanticizing fiction author and even blame Prussia, the Kaiser and even Hitler.

But this is no evidence. Other polish myth and history has survived very well, and as I said...it's about Serbs.

Oh please....the partition is long gone, and again, why are the historians able to point all the others participiants?

Another western/germanic conspiracy against the poor Serbs?
They just missed that one...period!

So stop this nonsense that there’s nothing that exist as a source. It does not exist for a reason.

Oh and Kaiser and Hitler are long gone too...

Jan Długosz (1 December 1415, Stara Brzeźnica – 19 May 1480, Kraków; also known as Joannes, Ioannes or Johannes Longinus

Johannes Longinus! Ah ja :)

600 years ago there seems to have been a battle...I wonder what the influence of that battle nowadays would be?

How dare you!!!!
They beat the Teutonic Order!!!!!!
Poles beat the Germans!!
(Only a won football game could be sweeter)

But I can understand it....I feel the same way about the Battle in the Teutoburg Forest 9 AD.
And THAT one had far reaching consequences!

That means everything!
Wiki is the main hub to start researching with lots of basic info and especially links for further study.
If one would write into an article about...say....the battle of Grunwald 1410...and puts Serbs innit, there would be others who would demand explanation, sources, etc.

(Sometimes to read the discussions about an article is as interesting as the article itself)

And especially with a subject so dear to so many Poles like this battle (*grin*) I can't believe that there aren't many interested writers who would love to add such facts (if they exist).

That would hold especially even more true in the case of the polish wiki I believe, written by Poles, whereas in the english language Wiki people don't seem to care if someone presents a "...allegedly Serbs" without any sources. For them it's not that important...

What is Dlugoszs source?

if your lucky a name of one or two more famous Knights.

Well, that might be, but the historians managed to find out about all the other nationalities taking part, why not the Serbs?

and do some research before writing his books?

Well, maybe he took his sources with him into his grave because there are no others to find?

There are alot of allied nationalities mentioned who fighted alongside the Poles, there is no reason to omit the Serbs if they had been there.

Seeing that this battle seems to be a cornerstone of polish myth I guess it's quite widely researched, by Poles no less....still no sources!

And a fictional writer has for me the same value like Crow himself....I too could write alot of stuff only because I would like it to be so!

Even Sienkiewicz in Krzyżacy mentions them.

Erm....a historical, romantic writer who thought up all his stories totally fictional more than 500 years later is your proof?

Even if Serbs were there they didn't seem to make any contribution to be put alongside the others in the encyclopedias...;)

Maybe Germans fighted alongside the Poles too? It takes Germanics to beat Germanics, you know!
(I read that in a novel)

Serbs participated allegedely in the battle of Grunwald.

The only mention is:

....and allegedly Serbs.[citation needed]

So we can forget about that! Probably a Serb putting that into the text.
(And better for Poles, they would had probably lost with Serbs dragging them down) ;)

The real battle:

Polish forces
39,000-50,000 men

Kingdom of Poland[1]
Grand Duchy of Lithuania
Polish-Lithuanian vassals, allies and mercenaries:[2]
Moldavia Principality of Moldavia[3]
Tartars[1]
Bohemians[2],
Moravians[2]
Russians (Ruthenians)[4]

against the Teutonic Order
27,000-32,000 men

Like air. :):):) Whenever I recall how Poles managed to push back the Teutonic invaders, I feel complacent and work goes faster.

Now then...you may proceed! :)

smashed, smashed

The Poles are still glad that there was no Serb in sight. They would had lost again (both).

Yes, and the years 1700-1799 are considered the 18th century however final partition of Poland-Lithuania was in 1795.

Well, then that was the second partition she speaks of...still Prussia, Russia and Austria!

1700s
Poland's three powerful neighbors, Russia, Prussia and Austria, each want to own Poland. This was all but impossible without risking war with each other. They finally settled their dispute by dividing Poland among themselves in a series of agreements called the Three Partitions of Poland.

1793
During the Second Partition, Russia and Prussia take over half of what was left of Poland.

1795
The Third Partition divides the rest of Poland. Poland is "officially" non-existent for the next 123 years.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

In the 18th century, ethnic Poles constituted 45% of the population. The minorities had their schools, their religions and their businesses. That's all I'm saying.

Erm...correct me if I'm wrong but Poland got re-established in 1919 only.
This "warm" and "welcoming" Poland you speak of must be that of Prussia, Russia and Austria since 1795 then..;)

I can't understand it either. Its a strange world.

Compare that to 300,000 Israelis that traveled to Turkey. I don't think that means we have a big affinity to Turkish culture. Ok, it's closer and cheaper. But 25,000 is no big deal.

Not only closer and cheaper but not being the country of the "Täter" either!
I don't find it comparable...

And I really find it astounding that Germany is so popular with Jews, especially Israelis.
It's something I can hardly understand..

Sure, but I don't see a thread about Polish love and tolerance for minorities, also.

Yeah...wonder why....

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

Well, hence my example...not only are there alot of jewish stories out there who have less than favourable memories of their time in Poland under the Nazis but that there is a much more fresh imprint what could influence current opinions.

After all 1968 is not as far back as 1945...and many Jews might remember that too.
The topic is "Polish hatred towards Jews" and not "Polish hatred towards Jews in WWII".

Official, government supported anti-semitism and expellation of Jews...you can hardly expect that to be without consequences.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

There are so many Jews who have the impression (because they lived through it) that Poland was very welcoming and warm to minorities. It's just that today, there are some (Foxman) who seem to want to stamp that out. Why?

Where did you study history Ma?

/wiki/March_1968_events

....The wave of antisemitism instigated by the authorities of the People's Republic of Poland as part of the "anti-Zionist" campaign, served as a tactic to divert public attention from the political crisis in the country and resulted in the final mass flight of Jews from Poland.

The survey is a bit suspicious since it probably had an agenda it was trying to promote. So I don't know how accurate it is.

Probably....

Who talks about the germans? The only relevance of Germany to them is their historical role.

Well, that isn't quite the case either, isn't it!:

usatoday.com/news/world/2007-04-01-german-jews_N.htm

...."In 2005, more Jewish immigrants came to Germany than to Israel," said Stephan Kramer,...
"Without immigration, most of the Jewish communities would not exist anymore," he said, adding that about 200,000 Jews left the former Soviet Union for Germany since the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989.

Or this:

ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3793436,00.html

Israel 2nd in number of tourists to Berlin

Americans are only ones outside Europe to visit German capital more than Israelis. Some 25,000 entries of Israeli tourists recorded Berlin in first seven months of 2009

Poll: Most Israelis sympathetic towards Germany

*puzzled*

That throws me:

..."People expect that younger generations have more positives opinions, but what is happening is actually the opposite. The older the person, the less sweeping and the more sober their opinions are towards Germans.

So...Jews who actually suffered the Nazis and the Holocaust have generally a better view of the Germans than younger ones who never experienced it? Whoa.....

News / Should Poland Remove Visa Restrictions? [285]

I mean could he go to other communist countries for holidays?

You needed permission and the foreign currency...not everybody got that because the GDR never had enough of it for itself. Just packing your bag and going was not possible.

Travels to other eastern countries were even often given as reward for clean "best worker", people who were politically firm on line....it was that valuable.

But the other communist countries were at least reachable, the West was a no go (for East Germans that is).

News / Should Poland Remove Visa Restrictions? [285]

Why then everyone says that east Berlin resembles much more Reich Germany than west Berlin?

Because West Berlin got rebuild much more in the old tradition, as it once was.
East-Berlin got to be re-build as a stalinist vision, and that was not much different than Hitler's vision of Germania....hence the similiarity..

A new people, a new world order needed a new art, everything had to be new...you know? Communist art...what crap!

Communists brought back old fests, habits, folklore cinema, theatre etc.

You mean everything what was not seen as bourgeous and "decadent"? Meaning nearly everything traditional...because a new world was to be build, who needs folklore for that!

Southern, you really have no idea!
