Life / Looking for someone in Poland who has stolen from me. [11]

Ziemek, they do Chemistry Faculty there but I do not exclude Nuclear Institute or other organizational unit. Man, somebody must study it in Poland... As a chemical engineer, I think the information is correct.

I was right:

Of course she could, yet, the generator (and the PC!) would be made by a factory, and well you know, the factory... ;)

I wanted to keep her as an exhibit but she lost her patience ;) Her husband (a quite well known horn/saxophone player) is even worse: He was telling everybody how fantastic and rich Libya was, and he knew it since he could speak Arabic and watch Al-Jazeera ;)

Ah, to make the story complete: I had been called by them a bourgeois even if I live in the forest and keep a kind of National Park here ;)

from a dogs hair?

Precisely of the dogs' hair.

The most ecological would be going back to caves, resigning from washing powder, running water, heating, electricity, and PCs in the first place don't you think so.

Yes, I know an extreme family, ecologists, leftists and anarchists. They live in the countryside. She gives each family member a glass of water daily for washing. She crops her dogs every spring and makes wool clothes for the family. On the nuclear accident in Japan, "Mother Earth cried", she wrote. She can strike the flint and make bonfire. Yet, she cannot resign from using the PC, and PCs are electrically powered, and electricity here is made of coal, and this makes Mother Earth choke. When I wrote the latter to her, she threw me out her Friend List on Facebook ;)))))))))))))))

News / Conservative-liberalism (Laissez-faire liberalism), another utopia for Poland? [99]

More than likely, the roads would be maintained by a business.

Sorry, Mises, can't you speak in practical terms?

Nowadays, roads are constructed and maintained in Poland from these funds:
1. Local and borough roads: from local taxes
2. County, regional and nation-wide roads: From excise tax included in the fuel price. The more you drive, the more you pay. Also, from a fraction of VAT that businesses can deduct in quite great deal. All consumers pay VAT.

Now, could you explain not by text-book but in plain English:
There is a small workshop producing something next door. What they should do and which way they should pay and to whom and how much to secure: local street in front of them; borough street leading to borough road; the multi-county road 719; the regional route 70; the national route 8?

Because highways are indeed to be toll-roads.

One interesting point: Couple years ago, Norway decided to slightly decrease VAT on food to "help poor citizens". As the effect, the prices of food significantly rose, because that meant businesses had to bear cost of the new tax systems. The population of Oslo got into their cars and went to neighboring Sweden for shopping, enjoying low Swedish prices of food. We are talking on micro-intervention in economy. What would happen if you tried to implement major changes, required to implement classical liberal system? A new Chile?

Can we keep nationalism and jingoism apart from interventionism and protectionism, Ludwig?
How would you explain the dictatorship in Chile of Pinochet era, the country being at least technically classic liberal in the economy terms but the dictatorship denying the word 'liberty'?

On contrary. The words such as "reklamówka" or "anużka" (A nuż coś rzucą?) date from that era. Before that "siatkas" (net-bags) were in use.

History / Poland's biggest historical blunder? [341]

Not true. The military, postal system and railway transport were Polish. Same as big deal of inhabitants. The defence of Westerplatte and of Poczta Główna in 1939 resulted from exactly those roles in the Wolne Miasto Gdańsk.

Friedrich, it really looks good on paper but... I cannot help reading your explanation as "pouring a lot of water" (I don't know the English idiom for writing a lot with minimum or no essence in it).

Tell me precisely please:
I. Who in what form should:
A. Pay for local (town, city, village) roads. My town of Brwinów for example.
B. Pay for borough roads. My borough of Brwinów for example.
C. Pay for county roads. My county of Pruszków for example
D. Pay for regional (voivodship) roads. My voivodship of Mazovia for example.
E. Pay for country-wide roads. Road Białystok - Wrocław for example.
F. Pay for new highway construction and maintenance.
Please, do not pour water. Explain precisely who and which way.

Once you have answered that, we'll move on to retirement, also in great detail.

History / Poland's biggest historical blunder? [341]

My comment is: Gdańsk was multinational until WWII. Poles and German had defined roles even in the Freistadt Danzig. Pity Nazis ended it all.

Note: Before 20th c. Poland even had no Polish Admiral, all were foreigners.

Hubabuba, too long to write on the history of Gdańsk here. Google out the meaning of word "Hansa". And maybe Johannes Hevel. And perhaps Arend Dickmann. If you think multinational Gdańsk started during partitions, you are ignorant.

(von) Mises, the theory sounds good, however let me ask you two questions now:

1. The transportation infrastructure: I haven't understood who shall pay for maintaining and construction of roads. Please explain.
2. The retirement description would be practical if we could start with an idealized situation the whole society is in their 20s, well educated, skilled, healthy. How do you see existing situation where so many people is on retirement or close enough to retirement and they depend on the existing public system of pension? If you want to make your ideas real, how would you do it?

(I may have more questions but I leave these two for now).

Life / Who is poor in Poland? [720]

Because now it's unecological to carry plastic bags?

No. In the olden days, it was very hard to buy anything, from toilet paper to sugar to meat to light bulbs. There were few cars, too. You never "bought" things, you were "managing" (or even more precise word: "conquering") things. Therefore everybody had to be prepared for the rare miracle of event "the authorities have just thrown some goods to the shop" (władze rzuciły towar do sklepu) , and people were carrying bags in hope of such event. More: They were also using small trolley-bags for the same reason. "Kochanie, zdobyłem żarówki!" (Sweethart, I've conquered some light-bulbs!) a proud warrior used to declare to his beloved one.

Nowadays, you buy when you need, so why should you carry a bag with you all day long? Young people carry backpacks but not for any goods to be by miracle found in a store. Many people do shopping using their car. Why should people carry bags then?

News / Tusk drops Chinese COVEC building the A2 motorway in Poland [83]

I'll be tempted to say at this point: screw them, take a Polish company, paid them 0.6-1 billion more and let them go to work asap.

Me, too. Or a German, Scandinavian, just a European company with resources available.

Do you remember that 1989 Bydgoszcz movie, milky? You said the cars looked mostly the same in 1989 as they look now in Poland. It's not important I do not agree with you. Important is, you have missed something very interesting in that movie: EVERYONE was carrying a plastic bag in their hands. Nowadays, most of people walk with empty hands. Have you noticed that? Any conclusions?

This I knew, and tried to make a little joke, not aware of existence of hash-brownies ;) Thank you!

judging by the popularity of Korwin - Mikke in Poland, he fell into the category of forgotten political mistakes of the new democracy in Poland.

Frustrated people who:
1. Are not followers of PiS
2. Are not followers of Radio Maryja
3. Are not followers of nationalist/racist movements
4. Are not commies
5. Are not followers of ultra-left/anarchist movements
are with high probability the followers of UPR.

Taken into account the concentration of lunatics on these Forums, I can perfectly understand Ziemek what you might have thought just by glancing at my original post ;-)

Scandinavia: Are we talking about Sweden and Norway, as only those two countries are located at the Scandinavian Peninsula? Both countries are slightly too socialist to my taste, still I admire the hard working Norwegian and the highly educated Swedish.

Hash cocoa! Hahahahah! I always wondered if hash-browns were made with cannabis :D

History / German Traitor And Polish Pig [96]

The German nation was lured by attractive nationalist/racist idea, was made to believe them shall rule the world, effectively falling in mass madness that led to all those events. In the same era, different nations of former Russian empire were lured by attractive communist idea promising them universal happiness, effectively falling in mass madness that cost lives of million people. Same in China, same in any other country where some poisonous idea lured greater part of a nation.

Bzibzioh, by condemning the German nation (instead of the poisonous Nazi idea), falls into the same mental track as Germans fell lured by Hitler. Thinking that some nation is generic bad is nothing else as promoting nationalism/racism, the curse of the 20th century. Czas wyjąć belkę z własnego oka (I do not know how this Bible text translates to English).

Not without the reasons, the message of Polish Episcopate to German Episcopate of 1966 was: "We forgive and ask for forgiveness".

I was born well after WWII. I know the stories told me by my Dad and Mum. He suffering Nazi oppression, she suffering Soviet oppression. I do not forget it, because forgetting the history is a sin -- and the greatest sin is forgetting the history to make the same mistakes again. Yet, German people never did any personal harm to me, on contrary, they helped me many times. Yet, I lost my youth in a country ruled by Soviet-driven commies and I won't forget that.

All this nationalist talk, Des Essientes, makes the whole effort of Germans to settle accounts with their own history futile. Because you or Bzibzioh have not learned a bit on the history.

News / Conservative-liberalism (Laissez-faire liberalism), another utopia for Poland? [99]

Over a quarter of century ago, I used to attend lectures of Janusz Korwin-Mikke (JKM), the person defining the conservative-liberalism (in the sense of economical laissez-faire) in Poland, the founder of Unia Polityki Realnej (UPR). Young Korwin was talking sense, and he was so convincing that I implement his ideas in my personal life till this day. (To make the picture complete, I was also attending lectures of young Adam Michnik and Jacek Kuroń; while I liked what Adam was saying, Jacek's co-operative movement ideas seemed a little going banana to me already at that time).

Now, almost three decades after I listened to Korwin's lectures, Poland was able to build market economy and learned something on own mistakes. Still, number of people are dissatisfied and are trying to find their golden formula for an ideal country. People appearing the most frustrated are the followers of UPR. Let us think whether the conservative-liberal concept (always defined as laissez-faire liberalism) is any way to solve the problems of today's Poland. Yes, some countries had their phase of really liberal economy, mentioning the US in the first place, many years ago. (The concept opposite to laissez-faire liberalism would be etatism or stateism, called 'socialism' by followers of JKM).

The rules of conservative-liberalisms as laid out by JKM in early 1980's were:
1. The role of State should be reduced to absolute minimum;
2. Taxes should be spent only on the Army and be absolutely minimal;
3. No social insurance. No social benefits. No public system of pensions. You have to work, save, invest, you also may invest in private insurance/pension.

4. You better establish a large family, so your children and grandchildren shall take care of you when you're old and unlucky
5. Health system, educational system, all of this is on your own expense, since you know the best how you want to distribute your own money, not the State, right?

6. The economy should be based on laissez-faire or catch-as-catch-can.
7. The police should be private force to which citizen pay to get protection. Locally, people shall carry firearms and organize own security or militia
8. No labour protection: you can be fired at any time if your employer does not like you.
9. (Unsure how the road system should be maintained and developed)
10. Personal responsibility of an individual for own success or failure. No-one gonna help you unless you take care of it yourself. Democracy equals socialism equals EVIL INCARNATED.

To me, the theory looks very nicely as long as it remains on paper.

Let us start with the old-age pensioners or people close to the pension-age. Either these are still supported -- and that means that taxes need to be still collected making the whole idea very ineffective and self-contradictory for many years -- or let the significant group of the people die of hunger.

Next, given all social benefits, the public health, education, police, road etc. systems, there is no evolutionary way to reach such ideal. Because people such as PO or let us just mention one Leszek Balcerowicz, are ridiculed at by UPR followers. Therefore, the only way to start making the conservative-liberal ideals here is to make a coup d'etat. As the effect, all the freedom, laissez-faire and like ideals go to dustbin, right?

Conservative liberals of UPR seem to feel something must be wrong in their thinking, so over last 25 years the doctrine has drastically changed. Now, the UPR followers say: "To make our ideals real, let us enforce -- politically a dictatorship -- and we will let it be economically laissez-faire; that way we will be able to make our points 1-10 real". However, maintaining dictatorship requires the strongest State possible, so the point (1) goes to Hell on the day one. Maintaining the dictatorship also requires money, and these can only be gathered by taxes. Now, the point (2) goes to Hell. The strong regime must also be based on privileges to its officers, so it might be expected so nepotism and corruption will start soon, because people are just people.

Yes, there was a country where conservative liberalism had been introduced. It was Chile and the leader was Gen. Pinochet. As you know, the actions of the Gen. Pinochet regime did not lead to significant growth in Chilean economy (HDI2010 gives 45th world position to Chile in Human Development, while Poland is 41st without conservative liberalism), but Gen. Pinochet before his death in 2006 was charged with 300 criminal offences, including violation of human rights (i.a., political murders by his henchmen), embezzlement, tax evasion, and corruption. Still, gen. Pinochet is the Saint for UPR followers.

Said so much: Is the conservative liberalism in the sense described as above any answer to Polish problems, or is it next utopia, since Communism looked good when it was only on paper?

Discuss.

have You ever listened to Radio Maryja

I have, since while you scan the radio band in your car, there are typically three-to-five frequencies at which Radio Maryja is simultaneously broadcasted at the same time at any single location and it seems there is no place in Poland they cannot cover. Listening to them for 5-10 minutes makes you regret you are Roman Catholic and you start hating your own faith. This is like listening to Radio Tirana au rebours.

insanity of the war

The point is not Germany, the point is the inhuman system. At about the same time, atrocities were committed by Soviets on all nations composing Soviet Union. Saying Soviets were "Russian" or "Ukrainian" or "Georgian" would be at least funny. Soviets were Soviets, criminal system. Nazi were Nazi, criminal system. Criminal inhuman system is not related to a specific nation.

By condemning a nation (instead of system), you Bzibzioh follow the way of thinking of Adolf.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

Looks like older model of Warszawa, but it could be Pobeda or simply an American car, because Pobedas and Warszawas were copies of old American cars.

I could recognize the Warszawa because my uncle had both the older and the newer models, and the shape of the steering wheel and of speedometer has been known to me since I was a small kid.

History / German Traitor And Polish Pig [96]

On the other hand, the times were indeed cruel. My Dad was liberated in West Germany by the English in 1945 from slavery work. After short service in the Auxilliary Forces, he was demobilized and became a Displaced Person. DP's were stationed in barracks and if I remember his stories, also in German houses. My Dad became a foreman and his task was also maintaining peace and good conduct among other DPs.

He told me he had been experiencing big problems with maintaining order among the crowd of multi-national mix of people demoralized during the war. For example, favourite pastime of some group of those people was humiliating German women by painting them with shoe polish so those poor creatures were resembling Negroes and were jeered at. My Dad handled it by dissolving the group and merging individuals of that group with more peaceful crowd.

Many things used to happen.
