News / Pubs in Poznan kick out Roma? [256]

BTW - I have nothing against anyone having children (what you so inelegantly call "breeding"). I have a lot though against marrying off 16-year-old girls and expecting them to start having babies immediately.

Just stop feeding them, problem solves itself after a while.

News / New Polish Light Tank - Anders [74]

they never heard for `Zawisha`?

Not quite I follow you. The tank was named after a Polish hero of late, not a hero of times long past. Someone that was alive in recent history, and did quite a bit for contemporary Poland. You take issue with that? ...odd.

No, it's easy, provide all the help possible to integrate, and prosecute them for breaking the law. Easy.

So there goes your integrated argument.

Not at all, they didn't have anything to integrate into. It didn't turn German/Russian/Austrian. The administrative borders changed. Again, for integration, foreigners coming to Poland right now (or even back in the day as refugees, migrants, that would be a much better example.

For you :p

I think they are a perfect example, Polish culture did not assimilate, the language did not die, traditions are still alive and the identity of being Polish still kicking.
Poland did not exist and now it does because fo the will of the people.

No, but Poles functioned within the new structure. Adaption took place. Again, you don't have to lose your identity in order to integrate.

So how do you see integration working?
I guess if it hasn't worked for 500 years, it's not really an issue.
Force them?

It hasn't worked for some of them. The current system is just fine. Just stop paying them to make babies, and I'm happy. In fact, stop paying anyone to make babies.

Why?

Because if not you'll always be complaining about being treated different....

Were Polish people content living in someone else's culture?
NO, to the extent they fought for their own country back.

Not really. They did seize on an opportunity when it was presented. And if you look at the partitions, it was more or less still Poland, just with a new tax master. The Partitions are a bad example.

Integrated? I just used you as an example, I don't want to talk about the U.S. it's a great place but integrated is not the word to use.

Integrated is the single most important point about this thread. The video that was shown is absolute bigotry, I agree on that.

But as to the question of integration, some do, some don't. Quite a few don't, by choice. That's a hard one to argue with considering the number of outreach programs that are out there. Some people want to integrate, some don't.

What's the next step? Gotta settle down somewhere...

that's strange because I could have sworn I was in Poland, not Germany, Austrian-Hungarian or Russia.
Where the flip am I???

Did they get jobs in those societies? Yes.
Did they become educated in those societies? Yes.
Did they speak the local language? Yes.
Did they hold public office? Yes.
Were they of nearly the same culture anyway? Yes...

Compare that to Gypsies...

I don't believe that, so if the Poles integrated so well, why is there a Poland?

Again, you can still hold on to your identity while working within the constructs of a new culture. I'm not Polish, I integrated fairly well. Hell, Nigerians, Vietnamese, Russians... Why do we make excuses for Gypsies?

Do Romani want their own country?

No.

There was no gravity before Newton invented it either but you're still a yank :D

Fair enough. We integrated pretty well over there. Some are still stuck on reservations drinking themselves stupid and living on the dole, others got off their butts and integrated.

A recurring thought I have while reading this thread is about Poland during the partition, when it didn't exist.
If Poles had integrated into the German, Austrian-Hungarian and Russian Empires, there would be no modern day Poland and therefore no PF (can you imagine).

Poles did integrate into those societies. They spoke the language, worked alongside different ethnicities, intermarried. Polish culture isn't all that far off from the cultures of her neighbors, not a whole lot of adaptation needed. You don't have to lose your identity in order to integrate. But it's kind of moot, as Poles were forced to integrate due to their homeland being split up, Roma haven't yet settled down anywhere. There's not a whole lot of ways to get your own country, you either fight for it, or integrate into another society.

yes after 500 years, like Convex is an American :p

Remember, there was no America before Europeans came over and kicked the bejesus out of the Indians (of which I'm a card carrying member, discount car insurance FTW!).

News / Pubs in Poznan kick out Roma? [256]

Have any of you actually talked to any Roma? Visited them at home? Eaten at their table (not WITH them though, because that would defile them ritually)? Seen how they raise their children?

Sure, our bass player in Prague. His day job was a UNIX admin at a large shipping company.

So are you saying they are not European? You call yourself an American but people who have lived here for 500 years are just blow ins?

If they integrate they are, if not, no they're not. What does that have to do on whether they integrate or not? That is the question, is it not?

It's that part of the Roma life people have problems with...and they don't want them anywhere near.

Question is, would it be acceptable for me to behave like that? Probably not.

The sheer number of Roma that have found success in Europe points to the problem being one of integration. Some put in the effort, and integrate, some have no intention of integrating. Fair enough, it's a choice. Easy as that right?

How about just helping whoever wants to integrate with open arms, and the ones that want to continue with unacceptable behavior should be ostracized for it?

Life / Support wanted to stop the sale of live carp in Poland [74]

Has a carp ever in human history cared about man? No. Would a carp rescue me, say if I were drowning? No. Would a carp eat my remains if I drowned in a pond? Yes. If intelligent enough to make the choice of helping me live, or letting me drown, I believe the carp would let me go under, and then snack on me.

No, the carp can go screw itself, a selfish and cruel beast. I don't like carp, but I think I'm going to go buy one now and sling it out the window to feed the local strays.

Life / $3,000-$4,000 a month - would we have enough money to live in Poland? [273]

The open season begins May 1st and ends September 31st when they are most numerous in PL.

Lots of Polish "American Hunters" don't follow the seasons. I was chased today by a pack of illegal hunters far outside of the season. Even after yelling at them that I was only half, they still continued. Barbarians, rules are rules...it's a shame that they don't follow them.

I know this is a bad time (too late) to mention... but I am allergic to sea food ! and I know they eat a lot of it... and it is cheaper than BEEF or any other meat.

Learn to love pork. Beef here sucks.

why name Anders? that`s not Slavic name. Not even particularly Polish

Travel / Polish Dropzones (licensed skydiver intends to travel to Brzeg in Śląsk) [7]

No clue about what they've got there, but they do tandem jumps, so I'm guessing they've got equipment to rent. Looks like the price for a ride up to 4000m last year was 80zl. Just about everyone at Miroslawice speaks English though. I went up a couple of times in the Porter (and came back down with it) to see meat packets being thrown of the plane in person.

They also do jumps at Szymanow, which is just North of Wroclaw, might be closer for you:

Travel / What's good to do in Wroclaw Poland? [34]

Googling women on Rynek
The botanical gardens are nice
Jewish cemetery/Soviet one is interesting too
A walk through Ostrow Tumski
Cruise up the Odra on one of those drunkard boats
Hala Ludowa is neat, the Japanese Garden is right next door...and the light show fountain that sucked up all the money for road repairs...

Your normal assortment of museums for a city this size.

Yea, that's about it. Give me a shout if you're going to be here in the next couple of weeks. Wroclaw is famous for having been German a couple of years back. If German history interests you, there's quite a bit here. Polish history..the Cathedral Island is about it.

Or rather those who dont wont them to integrate.

Disagree with you there. Integration is on the table, and lots of Roma do successfully integrate. Those that don't obviously aren't accepted.

Are you saying it's a kind of 'Mob Rule'?
You are either with us or hit the road?

Yes, absolutely. If you choose not to be part of the culture, it should come as no surprise when you're not accepted. There's a difference between holding on to tradition and rejecting your host culture altogether.

Come on, this is a discussion forum... we have to get into it or else there won't be much of a discussion just a load of bickering (on PF? NEVER:)

People that have no desire to integrate will always be discriminated against.

Travel / Polish Dropzones (licensed skydiver intends to travel to Brzeg in Śląsk) [7]

There is a dive school in Miroslawice (EPMR), it's about 60km to the West of Brzeg. They do jumps out of a Porter, but I don't know if they operate during the winter. I can do some research if you want.

...alternatively, we could rent a 152 and I could throw you out of it.

Yes Harry, based on that comment, I believe that Hitler had the right idea and that gypsies should be exterminated.

Anyway, back to reality, a good number of the folks that we ended up having to throw out of our place in Prague were gypsies. Just how it is. Plenty of places in Prague also don't allow British stag groups either, also intolerant I suppose...

Not really. I only see what kind of problems gypsies cause. I hear the stories from first-hand experience. They simply have no morals. They are social parasites posing as "refugees".

Disagree with you there. There are quite a few bad apples disproportionate to the size of the population...but it's not a problem with their race, but rather the culture (which is due to a number of reasons...but we won't get into that). It's a pretty vicious circle of discrimination and reaction, just depends on what part of the circle that you start at when looking at the problem.

Life / Are Poles bankrupt? [35]

If you have your own currency you can. Besides the debt was owned by the banks and they made the citizenry assume the debt. The Euro's a big scam.
