News / Poland's atheist loonies have had their 5 minutes [239]

I am making pasta with smoked salmon and cream sauce for Trzech Kroli . No potatoes.

And this is the best and most wise comment as far. But can you tell us what kind of pasta? I knew you are into FSM! ;)

Barney and Olaf - thanks for the witty comments;).

That's my job here;)

BTW: Did you know there were actually four kings? And that they were not kings at all? And their names were not as we know them today - around 300 AD they were started to be called as they are till now. I read it in Krakow Post...

Christians = bad.
Muslims = good.

FSM suporters = even better

Study / Polish schools and Polish educational system level in your eyes [135]

That's right, it is a different educational system with all its advantages and disadvantages. But my point was I have seen to many too smart people after Polish white/red/yellow/gree/blueand whatever you call it - it's not Polishor European terminology - universities to say that it is any worse.

(i.e. not even a redbrick uni)

this what you cal a "uni" is not considered a university in Poland at all! A 'higher school of nail polishing

s Jagieloński is one of the top universities in Poland, would an english A-Level certificat be enough for them to acccept me

" is nothing I meant.

As Jagieloński is one of the top universities in Poland, would an english A-Level certificat be enough for them to acccept me?

Definitely.

This has all come up before anyway Olaf. I've no interest in debating it as there is no debate to be had.

I know! And I am surprised you argue that still. Polish universities can be a very competetive education choice as well - but there is diferent ed. system and the courses for foreigners are just for loughs sometimes... If you argue that then you don't know te subject I think.

Check the wiki entries for individual unis.

That is what they teach you outside Poland: chech wiki if you dont know. Congrats pal.

edit: The OP seems to disagree with you BTW Olaf ; )

what does it prove? That the OP doesn't know some fact or has just in fact asked tabout it? Hah, you're funny. But far from logics in your words.

Best uni in poland is generally to be the Jagellonian - no?

No:D It is the oldest not the best. Anyway it depends which department sometimes.

It's ranked 300 odd in European rankings.

- what ranking? Who made it? What's the methodology of the survey?

not highly regarded in Europe

- quality and opinion - totally different things.

Study / Polish schools and Polish educational system level in your eyes [135]

Hi,
It strongly depends on the faculty and university you'd choose in the UK or in Poland. Some are better here, some are better there. I don't think a diploma from the UK could make it more difficult in Poland than a Polish one. You'd just have to get it acknowledged by Polish authorities (ther's a special office for that) and that's it.

News / Poland's atheist loonies have had their 5 minutes [239]

A Catholic FSM or a Protestant FSM? We need to be told, I'm sure there is a massive difference between the two involving big words like marmalade and sausage.

The original and one and only FSM has meat balls and bologne sauce! Only some infidels :D say that it is made of penne and arrabiata. That's blasphemy.

News / Upping the speed limit in Poland [92]

Poland has to import virtually all of its oil, right?

So driving ever faster, in ever bigger cars, means you are sending more and more of your country's wealth to the Russians and the Arabs.

Seems pretty stupid to me, maybe you should all drive slower and do your country a huge favour!

Following your logic since Poland almost does not have it's own car brand - maybe Poles should leave their foreign-made cars and switch to donkeys, which by the way don't run on fuel. Carrots can be homegrown, so there's the solution!

Life / Is parity the answer for Polish women? [262]

A political party is of course free to submit a 50-50 slate of candidates but they want it to become the law of the land obligating all poltical parites. Do you believe this is the way to go? If not enough good female candidates come forward then the missing places will have to be filled by female mediocrities and also-rans.

Very good point here. If - for any reasons - there are less women interested in politics, or successful in it enough to emerge - then how this law will work on the quality of election lists? Mediocre candidates without any good education and/or experience are already huge problem in Poland. I wish there was more women in politics but this isn't the solution.

News / Upping the speed limit in Poland [92]

I don't think that it's the excess speed which is the problem. It is rather those one-lane, unsafe, badly marked (the "horizontal signs", lines separating lanes etc.) and very uneven roads that are major cause of accidents. Of course there are many idiots in cars, no argument here, but the quality of what we drive on... Where does all the road tax money go? (mind you all - around 1/3 of petrol price is excise tax and this is not the only income).

Law / Buying and legally using second hand car in Poland; I'm EU citizen [27]

An owner has to have an address of course. The holiday home robably doesn't have an address yet because it was not registered - if it was, then there is no problem, give that address once you register yourself there in urzad gminy.

If you bought the car and have no registered address in Poland, then I think you can wait until you do, only that the car cannot be driven unregistered.

Language / Polish keyboard 214 is best [34]

Actually, I think Dvorak Keyboard allows you to type even faster :)

Yes, Dvorak is interesting, but to type faster one must learn it jus as good as e.g. QWERTZ etc.
Dvorak is also customized for English so in other languages it can happen that you'll write a bit slower than traditional keyboard.

Life / Has anyone in Poland that you know been affected by H1N1? (swine flu) [44]

It's very safe.

Maybe, but what does it protect from? I hear it can help, but there is no guarantee. I read quite a lot on flu vaccination and one year decided to do it, first just to see if there's any difference. I usually get sick once a year, in winter, then I guess I acquire my immunity for the rest of the year. So I used

Vaxigrip

, properly. That was the worst winter I remember - I got sick after about a month (don't remember exactly if it was 4 or 6 weeks after vaccination...) in the worst way, couldn't recover for more than 2 weeks - never in my adult life was I feeling so sick. The only difference I made that year was vaccination. I know it could be a coincidence, but I also know my body well and the only conclusion I can make was that this probably happened because of vaccine. Since that time I am not a fan of flu vaccination. I think if you are fairly healthy and have natural immunity in your body that will be enough. I decided not to vaccinate against flu from then on and everything went back to normal: I can get ill once a year, recover after 4-7 days max and that is it.

The greatest scam was with the recent H1N1 flu vaccines: no guarantee it works, no guarantee it is even safe, no responibility and yet almost all the European governments bought loads of them from the pharmaceutical companies giving them unimaginable earnings! Soon it turned out that this kind of flu is nothing serious as it's less dangerous than... normal common flu and that bilions spent on vaccines were wasted. They should fire the people who made the decisions to buy them and possibly prosecute. I read Polish Minister of Health reffrained from buying the vaccines and despite wave of criticism she stuck to her point. After the vaccines turned out to be a hoax no one actually thanked her for saving the Polish government milions...

Love / How to ask the Polish parents for her hand in Marriage? [32]

Maybe do it in a more modern style, for example why not invite them all to a nice fancy restaurant and then announce to the mother that you and her daughter are engaged [of course propose to her beforehand if you hadn't ;) but I think the proposal is strictly between you and the girl, not any parents at that point] and that you intend to marry her. That would not be asking for permission to marry but it is a nice gesture and I think it'd be well played.

Life / Russian Language - is it offensive if I speak it to Polish people? [69]

If I traveled to Poland, would I offend anyone if I spoke Russian to them?

What?! Why??
I don't think so. Generally older generations may know Russian more than English and younger ones quite the opposite usually. But no one would feel offended, unless you show them the middle finger or something.

Food / Why carp for Polish Christmas? [157]

why do people in Poland eat carp for Christmas Eve

I think it is tradition - carp was brought to Poland around XIII century and was popular.

the worst one possible

- What? Why? Not true.

You can farm salmon as easily!

- You think farmed salmons are any better? That's daydreaming.

Is there any way to cook this fish so it's actually eatable?

Sure there are, many ways. Carp is a bit fatty, but fried in proper temp. can be very nice.

Salmon instead carp is like hamburgers and chips instead of pierogi and barszc!

Love / How to ask the Polish parents for her hand in Marriage? [32]

I've heard that for the Polish, it's a cultural norm that the man asks the father for his daughter's hand in Marriage.

That custom comes from the times when marriage was like a transaction and it was between the future husband and parents of the bride. There was negotiation of dowry and stipulating conditions. Like purchase. Out of this tradition you may do this, as a courtesy of course. But I would seriously reconsider any steps like that, it is 21st century, tradition is good, of course, if your fiance is traditional, but if she is more of a feminist and thinks that marriage is partnership based on equality, then it would be hypocritical and non-sense to follow this tradition. This is just my opinion, but maybe it'll help.

Law / Staly Meldunek / Karta Pobytu - achievable for an EU resident? [7]

Do not avoid her, tell her it is her duty and she's got nothing. Do talk to her supervisor, some officers don't know the law exactly, so straighten this up, and she'll know it for the future and you will get your zameldowanie stałe.
