History / "SOLIDARNOŚĆ" is just a word for Polish people? [47]

Solidarity anthem (unoficial) from 25th anivesary:

What is the official one? Was it Jan Pietrzak who started to sing?
He was so great making fun of the communist era! I used to love to go to his performances in Chicago in the 80's...

History / Polish weapons and militaria - got any? [153]

It says "czuwaj" on the handle, which dad tells me means "careful".

You're right isthatu2, It is polish scout's motto, which means more like :
Keep vigilance, be on the alert, be on guard.

with the kind of neighbors Poland has you gotta train kids right :)

News / Polish Immigrants Leave America for Europe [210]

Right on jones101. Most of the America bashers abroad know it only from the movies or their media, the home grown ones quickly get cured, when they stick their nose outside of the country. This country owes you nothing and gives you nothing, what it gives you however is opportunity. It's up to you what you want to do with it. Then, if you're smart - you can have anything and everything. I am an immigrant and came here with a suitcase in my hand. There is no other place where I would want to be.

News / Polish Immigrants Leave America for Europe [210]

i know a lot of people in us have no idea about the continental divisions...(what country belongs to what continent).....

Is that what you mean? I'm just being sarcastic.

Work / Education in Poland - system and structure [118]

When I was going to school in Poland, teachers had a favorite statement for students who sat the closest to the window..."you're no eagle, you won't fly" ...so the worst students had the window and back seats :)

The best ones sat in the first row, closer to the teachers desk...

I think, we had way to much "book smart" teaching, and not enough of independent thought and reason teaching, IMHO.

USA, Canada / Polish Citizen, US legal resident, but no Polish Passport... [67]

Nope, you take both with you, a polish passport to go to Poland and a green card to re-enter the US. I did it in the 80's, before I had US Passport. No applying for visa (any visa) was required, even then.

USA, Canada / What do Polish people think of the USA [287]

Americans don't have a history of having a nasty neighboring country invading them.
Also, they don't understand centuries old animosities between "tribes", which are still deeply rooted in Europe. European countries still hold on to their old roots and that's why they are not too friendly toward immigrants. It will take some time. It wasn't too rosy for first immigrants from "undesirable" countries from Europe in the past (Italy, Poland, Ireland), but it changed. It is Mexico now, who saturated the country and is frown upon.

In general, however, it is easy to be assimilated and feel like a part of American society instead of feeling like an outsider.
I noticed, that only Poles (or other nationals) who did not "make it" here feel hostile - yet - they stay.

Life / Polish culture do's and dont's? [106]

Most Poles have gentlemanly instincts, and let old people, women, or disabled on first.

I have to agree with this one. I was shocked at first in US, when I saw young punks on the subway, sitting and not giving up a seat to a little old lady or a man holding to a rail for their dear life, or a woman looking like she is nine months pregnent...cultural, I guess...

USA, Canada / Polish Citizen, US legal resident, but no Polish Passport... [67]

I just wanted to complement the US government. I mailed my old passport for renewal on Jan 7 and today I received a brand new one with an eChip embedded on it.

I thought I'll be waiting 'till March or so...
All I need is a ticket now. Poland and France, here are come! :)

USA, Canada / Polish Citizen, US legal resident, but no Polish Passport... [67]

All you need to travel is your US Passport. It's good to get in to Poland and good to get back. I use only USA Passport and let the Polish one expire 10 or 15 years ago.

Maybe I renew it some day (for a hefty price, I suppose).
My friend is also a citizen, but she travels only on Polish passport, because she's got property there and claims it's easier.

History / Unusual soldier (The bear - named Voytek) [71]

Apparently it's cold there, like the hearts of both British and Polish people!

The cold hearts will hopefully stop the "global warming". We're freezing in Chicago.

Travel / POLISH PKP BAD ATTITUDE [14]

behave like they own the rails.

in a way they do...take it or leave it attitude.
PKP employees were often described in the past as 'derailed" (a double meaning here). Apparently, it did not improve so far and something to be worked on.

Travel / POLISH PKP BAD ATTITUDE [14]

Did anyone informed you what the expected prove of residence for six months should be? There is some kind of disconnect in this bureaucracy.
Have you try to contact PKP's main office?
State/government workers suck no matter where you are, anyway.

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

No politics, no pollution, no loud music from a passing car's subwoofers, maybe a little snow and some good chocolate.

This sounds like a really good life. May I join you? :)

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

Poles hate snobby bastards who think they're the best in the world, and that their country is the best, etc. Unfortunately, most Americans are like this.

but.. it is still the best country in the world, isn't it? So, maybe they do have a point?

USA, Canada / What do Polish people think of the USA [287]

now the government in the US i think are trying to control everything. next year all broadcast radio and TV will turn to digital. so people have to buy all this new stuff that cost hundreds of $. so now they can control what u watch and listen to through the satellite system.

Stop spreading some bs propaganda wolfman. :) . It's time to throw away b&w TV sets, you know.. The "hundreds' of dollars it's just about $70.0. And, if you already have cable or satellite TV - basically no impact - just a better picture. I can't wait.

Food / Polish Eating Habits [87]

Poles enjoy home made whole foods. As someone said above, it takes time to go to the store (often walk), walk around, shop, come home, prepare a meal. All of it takes energy. So, even having a pork chop with potatoes (yumm), will get burned. Don't forget that you've gotta do the dishes after all... It's all about "moving'. Walking is the best exercise there is.

However, if you prefer to get a pizza on the way home or a burger and then spend your evening on the couch watching TV then your a## will balloon in no time.

I agree with the luck of good salads and vegetables. Even when they appear on the plate, they are "killed" with butter and brad crumbs anyway. My old fashioned family still tends to cook this way, but they are fit and healthy anyway. My sister-in-law is pretty huge, but she can eat the whole roasted chicken, if she feels like it!

Over all, it's all about quantity, no matter what's on the plate.

Life / What's wrong with you, Polish people - is it an inferiority complex? [120]

Polish inferiority complex ? I dont think so....
For me Poles are nation who are not taking any crap, and thats way it should be.
West is doing its suicide with its leftist PC'ness and west is jealous for people who dare to make a stand.

Bravo MaxxxP. That's exactly what I think.

Life / What's wrong with you, Polish people - is it an inferiority complex? [120]

Why do we have to view everything in the World trough the prism of our Nationality?

Maybe some do? Not everybody. Why are you putting all of us in the same basket?
The 'threads' you quoted are just for the sake of discussion, I think...
I personally don't feel inferior to anybody, superior...maybe -to some loosers..but that's it :)

Love / My Polish wife doesn't want to move to the UK with me - what to do? [96]

It looks like you, Britguyabroad, made up your mind already. The fact that you don't even like to be there (Poland) and "everything" is wrong there, including the weather, does make me think that you are ready to go back to UK with your wife - or not...

It's pretty sad, but when you're not happy - she isn't either. She follows you to UK, she'll be not happy and you will not be happy either. Yes, you should have talked about any kind of possibilities before you got married. Unfortunately, in today's world love does not conquer all, it's just a romantic notion.

Somehow, I don't see your love surviving it. Nowadays, a wife is not expected to go where her husband wants to go...and why should she?
