Language / What do you like in Polish language? [70]

I was not aware there was a quite distinct speech in Silesia (Slask?)

Well after WWII standard Polish steamrolled over a lot of traditional dialects and most of them became accents rather than dialects. Silesian still has some distinct dialects but not everybody uses them or agrees what makes them distinct....

My favorites are the ones that use -ch in the first person past - byłech etc.

Genealogy / DNA Testing in Poland. Is it popular? [81]

I did the 23 and Me test just for some fun

And because you really want the government to have your dna on record...

Life / What do decent Poles think about true rightists ? [148]

Isn't that against the goals of the leftists, who wants them organized, who wants minimal wages?

That's a contradiction in the left, part of them wants globalism and the liquidation of nation states but without the nation state there's no welfare or wage guarantees etc.

The leftists that really want minimum wages, welfare etc have traditionally been for limiting immigration (because they realize that economic realities don't allow welfare and lax immigration)

You sure? Aren't they for healthcare for all

Not a good bellweather issue in the US (since medical care is rationed by private insurance companies).

the globalist left is for open borders for two reasons:
1 employers like having vast numbers of interchangeable and disposable workers without much in the way of rights
2 the more people of different cultural backgrounds the harder it is for anyone to organize against the state

they're only pro-refugee as it supports 2

the rich don't mind higher taxes (the same way large corporations don't mind most regulations - they help keep newcomers from entering the market)

I would call the "globalist left" the good 'ol "Internationalist" left, they didn't change at all....:)

Actually they have, I don't know so much about Corbyn, but in the US the globalist left is fanatically pro-capital (and even the socialist government in Spain shut up about undoing austerity the moment they took office). The globalist left is all about making it easy for capital to move around and not at all about anything like social solidarity (identity politics pushed by them is the opposite of solidarity....)

By rightists I mean both standard and radical, primarily from Poland (e.g., PiS, nationalists, far right etc) but also abroad.

right and left dont' have so much meaning at present, the big emerging political split is between what might be referred to as

globalism : despite the name, globalist tendencies inexorably lead to extreme hierarchy and extreme social stratification and alienation of the majority from governments (which give up most of their traditional functions in favor or serving the needs of the capital class)

nationalism : despite modern propaganda about nationalism being exclusionary and terrible some type of nationalism is the only system that makes things like universal education and healthcare and democracy possible and it's notable that in the places where globalist policies have advanced the farthest things like education and other state services are being pared back....

Within each of these you get both right and left wing trends.

globalist right : Ted Cruz, Teresa May

globalist left : Corbyn, Hillary Clinton

nationalist right : Trump, Bolsinaro, Salvini

nationalist left : Bernie Sanders, podemos

At present these trends are barely being felt in Poland (which operates on a separate time schedule from most other countries)

But I consider PiS to be more globalist right than nationalist - despite their empty rhetoric they are handing out work visas like candy in Asia operating on the (almost always wrong) assumption that once the visa recipients aren't needed they'll just move on...

I meant the gate and fencing

I'm out of this one, the Polish mania for putting up unnecessary fences that make it harder to go from point A to point B prevents me from thinking straight... (I've wasted so much time in unnecessary detours....)

: when I said that usually people of that kind prefer to remain still and passive

So he's a beggar? And the piece of paper is his sob story?

A friend in the medical field once saw a woman with a small child and a printed sob story about collecting for an expensive operation and he was feeling goodhearted and tried to find out more information... only to discover that they didn't want him asking questions and drawing attention... and they weren't even Polish...

Or he's miserable because he's just been given that paper

But is it paper? The picture isn't that clear but it kind of looks like something else, but just what... a hint?

It is indeed important in this case. Why miserable?

To me he looks a bit like he's rehearsing for an appearance on Sprawa dla reportera or some other expose show. He has an outrageous bill that he wants to wave in the camera (not realizing the numbers won't show up...)

Got nothin' else...

meh, if they're not catholic then a local church they don't belong to knows where they live (hardly worth expending a lot of emotion over) and if they are catholic then they shouldn't mind (catholic does mean 'all encompassing' after all).

I can better understand being a bit miffed at the roommate though 'furious' seems a bit hysterical... (unless one had been bvggered by a priest in the past or something)

his January visits as Maf says, but he's wearing his vestments and the table is laid with the 'good' white tablecloth so I would say he's doing a blessing of the house

those are all features of the january visits in Poland (ime) not necessarily the full garb (that varies) but the candles on the table and cross and little bowl with holy water and the blessing of the house...

where I am they also keep a little book of who's living at a particular address and write/update that

A mutated cute and polite red squirrel (sooo cuuuuute) and not a nasty grey squirrel.... (spit, hock, spit)

History / Poland and Israel getting back on the right foot...maybe [132]

There was no Polish state during the holocaust so the post-Holocaust state bears no responsibility for it (or to the survivors as harsh as that sounds).

What do you want from the post-holocaust and post-communism Polish state?

Someone doing that in Western Poland would be laughed at and ignored

They were laughing, but it a good natured way, sort of "yeah, you got us!" Where I am now they wouldn't laugh and would likely fume and for sure not volunteer...

This was in the countryside and one cool thing was that before the service the organist was playing hymns and everybody was singing together unprompted, I can't imagine that in a city where they barely sing even with the words projected on the wall.

Pilgrimage is enough

I once accompanied a friend on a visit home (rural świętokrzyskie) and in church the priest scolded the congregation for not volunteering to put up an upcoming pilgrimage and indicated he'd just come around to people's houses with the 'guests' if they didn't gather enough volunteers...

What is this animal?

Looks like a squirrel but it's the wrong color for Poland. Generally European Red Squirrels are cute and adorable, unlike American grey squirrels which are large aggressive rats with fuzzy tails... the university I went to was infested with the nasty buggers.

Life / Would Poles prefer US or UK medical care? [112]

opiates have been around forever. Bought and sold just like anything.

No, punkin, just being around and being bought and sold is not a justification for anything. When you treat healthcare like just another product you're also giving free reign to znachory and ever imagineable type of quackery and enablying shysters to fleece people like wool heavy sheep.

In order to maintain a well-run technologically advanced society in which civic values some kind of universal basic care is needed, which may be supplemented by private expenditures by those who wish/can afford it. Anything else ends up being good healthcare for the wealthy and neglect for everyone else.

When Poland decides to come clean and admit that they weren't all angels

Who has ever claimed they were? The questions are, should Polish people feel collective guilt about the holocaust? (my answer: no) and Does the modern Polish state owe anything to descendants of holocaust victims? (my answer: no) and does the modern Polish state owe anything to Jewish advocacy groups looking for money payouts? (my answer: no)

What are your answers?

Again, healthcare is a service to be bought and sold

True, Punkin, but not in the way that you mean. The US system has given the world one of the great opiate addiction epidemics, entirely legal and brought about just by the mindset you name.

Google Sackler and opioid and you'll see the endgame of thinking of healthcare as a service to be bought and sold...
