Life / Lack of human rights in Poland? [132]

Merged: Poland to replace human rights delegates

Looks like another politicised appointment:

Poland's foreign minister says the nation's two lawyers assigned to a European human rights body that recently censured Poland will be replaced.

They are not aligned with Poland's conservative ruling party.

salon.com/2016/04/11/poland_to_replace_delegates_to_europes_human_rights_body/

The delegates being replaced are Hanna Suchocka and Krzysztof Drzewicki, both very heavyweight and respected figures.

The only result (apart from further compromising Poland on the European stage) is that the new 'delegates' will not be taken very seriously.

It remind's me a bit of Brecht's famous poem 'The Solution'
After the uprising of the 17th of June
The Secretary of the Writers' Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee
Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government
And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier
In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?

Travel / BBC'S Hairy Bikers come to Poland [13]

The Hairy Bikers (google them if you haven't heard of them) have kicked off their new series "Hairy Bikers' Northern Exposure" in Poland. A lot of views of scenery and townscapes, some mention of history and traditions and of course the cooking.

They make pierogi, bigos, kielbasa, piernik and a few other bits and pieces.

Worth mentioning that they're obviously Polonophiles (not their first visit) and are very positive about the people they meet and about Poland as a whole. The camerawork is particularly good - it somehow captures the feel of the place.

If you're outside the UK, you'll have to either use a VPN or maybe download a torrent if it's available. The second episode was about Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and also positive, but perhaps not as glowing and special as the way they show and speak about Poland

News / World's 'most wanted man' (a Pole) found working at British Subway restaurant [43]

They only move their butts if some politician really gets on their case or the media starts talking trash about them

On this we agree!

Police everywhere are very good at covering up mistakes and coming to their own defence. Poland is just the same.

I don't know why they bothered to leave to the UK unless there was that much heat on them in Poland.

Too much competition at home and a chance for pickings elsewhere. Plus a chance to evade justice, at least for a while.

I would've asked to defect to Iran or something personally... but that's just me.

Vietnam (and I think Japan, Sudan and Israel) apparently doesn't have extradition treaties (the list of countries who don't is getting much smaller by the year) but just as water finds its own level, London is much more achievable, epecially for a Polish speaker. Relatively easy to disappear there too.

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

all the negative publicity

What 'negative publicity? What 'footloosesness'? (Is that even a word?)

Only insinuations from discredited political oponents who nobody believes...

Nothing special, and quite honourable that he promised to pay everything back.

So in fact not only was Po caught out once again (this has happened so often) trying to promote a nasty lie aimed at smearing a decent and honest man, but as usual the truth is the exact opposite of something he repeatedly posted.

And the Polish pro-democracy movement is going from strength to strength.

How would you know? Have you read all the documentation relating to the issue?

Or are you just clutching at straws, since your lies about his visit to Washington organised by Freedom House were found out?

Perhaps it's just that you can't stand the fact that the Polish pro-democracy movement exists at all, and just won't go away.

Those pesky people who insist on democracy and the rule of law!

provided the child maintenace

Is that all you can think of? Such issues are a matter for him, his spouse and the divorce courts. Is he in prison for non-payment? No.

Insides say he is often seen boozing it up in pricey Warsaw locals

So what?

News / World's 'most wanted man' (a Pole) found working at British Subway restaurant [43]

Polish cops are totally lazy.

This much is true. They're better than they were (most of the functionally illiterate ones have been kicked out) but there are still competence issues.

there are much bigger fish at large!

Most of the career criminals have left Poland, many for the UK especially if they're facing charges.

The guy in question isn't really the 'world's most wanted man' but some of those highest on the list of Europe's most wanted are career criminals in Poland who have moved to the UK and faded into the shadows.

A soccer hooligan working at subway?

He killed someone in Poland apparently then fled to the UK. That's why the Polish authorities were looking so hard for him.

It's also a lot to do with the European Arrest warrant. The Polish police aren't much good at what they do, so it's great for a prosecutor to file some papers and have others do it for them.

I hope wire transfer rates are not that much

Have a look at World First - I use them and they are good. There's also Poland transfer who do something similar.

News / LGBT hate speech to be banned in Poland [208]

Petru's and PO's combined support is below PiS' 38%

So you're trying to pretend that only supporters of those two parties oppose PiS? Supporters of the other parties like them even less. As your usual attempts at misinformation go, Po, that's a particularly pathetic one.

And nobody, including the appalling PiS are suggesting changing the law on hate speech...

He hasn't had an appointment with Obama

He never said he was making a presidential visit. Just a high profile visit organised by the respected and prestigious Freedom House, which is true.

if you slander your own government to foreign powers and in foreign newsletters you are traitorous scum that jeopardies vital interests of Poland.

So falsely praising a bad government is somehow better?

News / Poland -- Europe's only counterweight to Russia [271]

You really don't want to answer my questions, do you?

I only answer real questions, not rhetorical ones.

You really are flogging a dead horse if you're trying to pretend that Russia is not a threat to the region.

I don't know where your quotations came from,

All there in black and white.

Ireland has its own history and culture.

As does Ukraine. A history and culture of which they are very proud. And a sovereign state who have friendly relations with Poland.

Looks like their next Prime Minister, assuming his appointment is ratified, is one of the good guys too.

Life / Polish Email Address not working [3]

The address is in the correct format and according to their site the address is spelt correctly correct.

If the emails are being knocked back, it's for another reason. Their website is working, so it can't be that they haven't paid their bill for the domain. It could be a temporary issue. Try phoning them, someone there will probably speak English.

Yeah, right, all the publicity here in PL, the official visits over there and Freedom House of all people organising the whole thing.

Very low key.........

At least he didn't have to sneak out of the back door, like kaczynski at Chatham House in London to avoid facing the sheer number of Poles protesting outside

Travel / Warsaw - Exchanging Large Sum GBP > PLN in Poland [48]

I looked too, and wonder if the rates are up-to-date. Usually the two close to each other under the Marriott hotel (777 and the other) are almost identical, maybe a couple of pence different per pound.

Looking at the exact address of Lombard, I'm fairly sure that's the one near 777, but as I say, the exchange rate might be out of date.

Travel / Warsaw - Exchanging Large Sum GBP > PLN in Poland [48]

I'm not sure - I know it by its location rather than by name, however it might be this one:
kantorylombardy.wix.com/kantor-lombard#!kontakt/c2q4

A couple of people I know (Brits in Warsaw) swear by this one, though I haven't personally used it:
kantor-intraco.pl

Also worth having a look at WorldFirst. It's an online exchange service, UK based and quite good. Banking hours only but more or less instant. I use this one every month since my salary comes in dollars.

Travel / Warsaw - Exchanging Large Sum GBP > PLN in Poland [48]

There is one in the underground passage between the Marriott hotel and the Warsaw Central Railway Station. I think it's called 777,

That one is OK - I use it often, as is the other one a few yards away. I always check both since there's often a small difference in their exchange rate.

The last piece in the puzzle is sorting the currency exchange at the Warsaw-end

Important to do it at the Warsaw end.

If you have a larger amount, they will often lay on a scurity guard for you.

that once a one lie has been debunked

Except it wasn't a lie and therefore couldn't be 'debunked'. For all the whinging and whining from some frankly nieciekawy people here who wish it wasn't true, the leader of the polish pro-democracy movement was invited by Freedom House to Washington for a very successful visit.

Straw-clutching or what...

Texas

In what way does the American people's love of internet porn affect a law in Poland that nobody is proposing changing?

PiS command more support than the Petru & Schetyna sideshow combined! Have you missed the latest CBOS poll?

So looks like you don't understand much bout staistics, since far more people loathe them than support them.

Having said that, PiS have no intention of reversing the law on hate speech.

News / Hackers attack Polish "erotic dating" site, threaten to expose users [35]

Condoms are no guarantee

They are however universally acknowledged as an excellent way of avoiding them.

I wonder if you'd like to see sales restricted....

And (this is worth repeating) the people who use dating sites are all adults, all responsible for their actions and whatever they do is a matter for them. Not for hackers or grouchy forum commentators.

You're sure the people who use the site are " spreading contagious diseases"?

That's what condoms are for. The site's users are adults, not breaking any law and can presumably make their own minds up about what they do.

Oops, I forgot you want to ban condoms too...
