News / Poland's political party to ban pornography? [60]

At issue was the use of taxpayer money to stage a morally controversial production.

I wonder how many of them had seen the script.

There is reportedly only a single one-minute-long porn scene in the two-hour presentation.

Indeed, they've done a cracking job - tickets are sold out until the end of the year, and the play will probably manage a run elsewhere now on a commercial basis with this kind of hysteria.

It's sad when people try and block culture that they're opposed to. This isn't the prudish PRL, after all.

News / Poland's election winning party: PIS proclamations [229]

And so we see the "defence" of the State Forests.

se.pl/wiadomosci/polityka/krewny-kaczynskiego-zosta-krolem-lasu_732282.html

Essentially, PiS have chosen a relative of Jaroslaw Kaczynski to be the director of the State Forestry Service. PiS, as always, are rotten to the core.

News / Poland's election winning party: PIS proclamations [229]

Kaczyński is a true patriot displaying little regard for personal amenities or comforts.

While that might be true in the case of Kaczyński (at least according to his financial statements) - it's certainly not true for other PiS members.

Work / How to find work in Warsaw "if u don't speak Polish" ! [176]

That's not what I've found in Poland. Quite the opposite - people are willing to communicate with foreigners and be as helpful as possible. I usually get mistaken for someone from the Czech Republic or Slovakia because my accent is too soft, but they've never been nasty about it.

Work / How to find work in Warsaw "if u don't speak Polish" ! [176]

well, in my country we criticise other Polish people for making a slightest mistake in Polish and you expect to be treated even better than Polish?

What nonsense. The vast majority of Polish people are very tolerant towards foreigners learning Polish and regard it as something honourable and decent.

Real Estate / BEST Poland's city to Invest in?? Warsaw, Wroclaw, Krakow, Poznan, Gdansk or...? [34]

Totally and utter off-topic.

Poland is free for foreigners to invest in, and we - the people of Poland - (not Australians masquerading as Poles online) welcome foreign investment.

To the OP - I would also advise steering well clear of off-plan properties, as well as large new properties. Generally speaking, the rental market isn't that strong when it comes to new flats, as people would rather buy, and it's difficult on many levels to rent new apartments to students.

The other crucial piece of advice is to look at who administrates the apartment, and to look very closely at all the documentation connected to it. There are plenty of examples of building administrators not acting in the best interest of the property owners.

Real Estate / BEST Poland's city to Invest in?? Warsaw, Wroclaw, Krakow, Poznan, Gdansk or...? [34]

I know my country better than most people on this forum, I am the heart and soul of Poland.

What, Australia?

You know nothing about Poland, and if by "heart and soul", you mean "ran away from Poland", then I agree.

I will not be silenced by a foreigner such as yourself who does not have Poland's best interest at heart.

If you had Poland's best interests at heart, you would start by holding your parents to account for abandoning and betraying Poland in the time of need.

You do not understand Polish suffering so do come here and tell me what I can say and what I can't say in regards to Polish matter, foreigners, especially western ones are the last ones who can take charge in conversations about Poland.

Sorry, but we're going to keep on buying up Poland and using it for our own purposes. What's better is that you can't do anything about it.

Unless you are of strong Slavic background with understanding and full respect for Polish ways of behaving and doing things and unless you are completely wiling to only accept Polish ways of doing business and ways of treating people then you should not be investing in Poland.

Complete and utter nonsense. Boxena can invest here if he/she wants, and foreign ways are more than welcome here. Western ways are badly needed in many areas, and xenophobic rubbish written by an Australian on PF won't change a thing.

Everyone - please focus on the topic only

News / US air base to be in Poland [193]

the rest was a corrupt vote

Hahahahaha. Who told you that, your grandfather?

The decision to have US air base in Poland is not what Polish society, at large, desires at all.

Utter crap. They've just elected a government that very clearly does want a US presence here.

I could certainly help you there as I know that market reasonably well but I will not, because you are not Polish.

That's a pretty disgusting thing to say. Imagine if someone told your parents that they won't help them because they aren't locals?

Your unfamiliarity with Poland is quite obvious. Polish owners of properties tend to use "Ukrainian" solutions to deal with conflicts, while foreigners tend to use the law.

Not to mention, we have already been told in the past by Jews this very famous phrase: "Your streets, our buildings" (Wasze ulice, nasze Kamienice), and we certainly do no want a repeat of that.

Oh, do be quiet.

Discuss ;)

Depends on a lot, but speaking about Poznań or Wrocłąw, the best bet is to buy an apartment in a thoroughly renovated kamienica. They're always popular with a wide section of society, the locations are good and they'll hold their value.

Don't buy above 70sqm or so, you'll struggle to rent it. If you're on site, then it might be worth buying several smaller studio apartments, as they're easy enough to rent to students or young couples.

Law / Decision on Karta Pobytu (Residence Card) in Poland. How long should I wait? [33]

It is free for spouses of Polish citizens, and allows you to stay in Poland up to 90 days in a 180 day permit.

Shouldn't he be entitled to visa free access to Poland if he holds a UK residence permit?

I thought the general principle these days was that a valid EU/EEA/CH residence permit was enough if you accompanied the spouse at the time of travel?

These days in Warsaw about 5.5 months from date of application (~4 months for decision and another ~1.5 months for actual card to be issued).

1.5 months for the card to be issued? That's an absolute joke.

News / Kaczyński slams "political correctness" plague in Poland [85]

Notably absent were:
- waste sorting
- saving water and energy
- obeying the law
- paying the taxes

It's very notable. The PiS idea of patriotism seems to completely exclude all the things that make countries such as Switzerland work well.

Then again, their idea of "patriotism" is taken straight from the PZPR guide on how to brainwash your citizens.

News / Poland to be Booted from Schengen - a Border Security Issue or Tusk's Revenge on Polish Voters for PO Defeat? [36]

Totally clueless.

Absolutely. Many borders were theoretically "closed" before Schengen, yet they were commonly used by locals without fuss. I suppose in Bieganski's North American world, locals would just go massively out of their way to go visit their friend, but in Europe, people would just go. Is he seriously suggesting that people in places such as Karvina (near Ostrava) were obeying the rules of crossing the border before 2007, including only crossing at official crossings?

Schengen came about partially because physical border crossings were a complete absurdity by the late 1980's.

News / Poland to be Booted from Schengen - a Border Security Issue or Tusk's Revenge on Polish Voters for PO Defeat? [36]

Anyone can do a search regarding the "mini-Schengen" scheme I started in this thread. Reuters now has their own an article online about it and even several Polish language news sites are citing the same DM article I referenced.

You seem to have completely misrepresented the actual facts.

The idea was floated by one party in the Dutch ruling coalition, and has been met with nothing but rejection by everyone else. The idea also wasn't about kicking countries out of Schengen, but rather about making sure that anyone trying to claim asylum would be held at the border of Benelux/Germany/Austria and processed in a systematic manner. No-one else in the EU is talking about this - it's a plan made by one party in one EU country. And even that plan is seemingly only actually a rumour in the Dutch press and nothing more.

In short, it's a non-issue. Even if Schengen falls apart, it's likely to mean that the Visegrad countries (plus a few more, like the Baltic countries) will form their own Schengen area. But Schengen is so vital to the "four freedoms" that it seems highly unlikely to fall anytime soon.

I also wish to point out that Schengen already existed in practice even before the Schengen agreement was signed. Many borders in Europe are just not well guarded - I've crossed countless non-Schengen borders illegally and without any consequence.

News / Poland to be Booted from Schengen - a Border Security Issue or Tusk's Revenge on Polish Voters for PO Defeat? [36]

Ironside Good excuse to get out without paying any money back in fines

Good excuse for the EU to remind Poland that there are a lot of poorer rural communities that she will have to fund herself without money from the CAP. Good excuse for the EU to remind Poland that all goods will need to be thoroughly checked again at the border, along with the huge queues of trucks that used to form.

News / Poland to be Booted from Schengen - a Border Security Issue or Tusk's Revenge on Polish Voters for PO Defeat? [36]

EU plans have been leaked showing Poland as a border state outside a revised "mini-Schengen".

It's the Daily Mail, which routinely makes up all sorts of stuff just to create sensation online. They're very, very good at it. That map you posted - did it not escape your attention that Latvia is in blue, which clearly means it's a pile of bollocks?

After all, PO had years in power (with Tusk himself at the helm) to ensure Poland's border security requirements were on par or exceed the standards of the members of this planned "mini-Schengen".

They are. The only thing that Poland could do a bit better would be to impose a frontier zone with Russia and Belarus, similar to Finland and Lithuania. Apart from that, Poland has done a fine job of protecting the Schengen border.

while there is pretty much zero infrastructure along a proposed (allegedly) border between Poland and Germany

Off the top of my head (border crossings being my specialist subject and all that), the infrastructure has mostly vanished from that border. It would be theoretically possible to reactivate the crossing in Kostrzyn nad Odrą as the canopy is still intact, but most of the buildings are now used by the gmina and a private nursery. I'm not sure what they did with the booths, but they were stored nearby not that long ago. Likewise, it wouldn't be too difficult to reintroduce controls at Świecko as some of the infrastructure is still there. Olszyna is also theoretically possible, although a lot of the infrastructure is completely ruined and the car infrastructure has been demolished. I *think* the old crossing at Garz is still intact, too. Apart from that, everything else has been demolished or removed to my knowledge. There are still some buildings intact and not in use (particularly on the German side), but the actual road infrastructure has gone. In places such as Zgorzelec, the motorway crossing was completely demolished, and the Polish border crossing in the town was completely demolished and new offices built in place. I think there's also one pedestrian crossing near Zittau that's still intact.

Not much really, and in many places, the infrastructure has been so comprehensively removed that it would take a lot of money and effort simply to put in anything resembling permanent controls.

and even less infrastructure along the Czech-Polish border (but instead the best part of 800km of very hard to patrol space),

Exactly. Not much remains at all - I've explored many, many places along the PL-CZ/DE borders, and both PL and CZ ruthlessly removed a lot of the infrastructure within a couple of years. There's still some remains near Hradek nad Nisou (the buildings used for pedestrian control are intact), but there's really not much to write about. The border has been opened so comprehensively that it would be so difficult to return to the pre-2004 state of affairs - and even then, many border crossings were open for tourist crossings anyway. The border as early as 1991 ceased to be controlled in a serious way - the internet is full of stories of people just jumping over fences to visit the Czech beer shop or the Polish meat shop with a blind eye being turned.

But definitely along the PL/CZ border, very very nothing remains of the infrastructure needed to even conduct EU border controls. It's not like Hungary that kept almost everything intact (although ruined) - they really did demolish absolutely everything. Even in Cieszyn, mostly everything has been demolished and a Castorama has been built on the site. There's still some facilities for truckers (likewise on the CZ side), but nothing of the scale needed to reactivate controls. Meanwhile, the pedestrian crossings in Cieszyn/Cesky Tesin have all been demolished or turned into shops.

What *is* realistic is Greece finally being told to shut up and accept EU help when it comes to patrolling their waters. The Greeks are whining and moaning about it, but I cannot understand why they haven't been told to either accept or face being booted out of Schengen.

Law / Open a restaurant in Poland - do I need a work permit? My karta pobytu has expired and I reapplied. [15]

If you think Warsaw is not a good idea which city is better?

Wrocław or Gdansk. Both have a huge amount of foreign tourists as well as a relatively young population, both of which will work well in your favour.

For example what do we need to take ISO documentation (22000), what is the restrictions of health, is it important to area of the shop, how many squaremeter have to be at least...

In all honesty - if you need to ask these questions, it's best to just appoint an experienced Polish chef who will guide you through everything.

News / Shortage of doctors, nurses and caregivers in Poland [5]

I know, I know, but I wanted to praise Poland anyway :)

Now they're all using the e-wus system, I really wish they could implement a system that only allows people to register for an appointment at one specialist at once. It would go a long, long way to getting rid of the waiting times.

because I've noticed there's a conviction among Westerners on this forum that Polish doctors are inferior to the British ones

May I be the first to say that my GP, local hospital and local 24 hour drop-in clinic are fantastic?

Law / Open a restaurant in Poland - do I need a work permit? My karta pobytu has expired and I reapplied. [15]

At least in Warsaw we're seeing a lot of rediscovering, reworking and reimagining of Polish food.

No surprise there, given who/what won the Michelin star. The point is very valid though - what people think of as "traditional Polish food" is actually basically Communist Poland garbage.

There are very good reasons why Warsaw now has so many fewer of such restaurants than it used to.

Levi wouldn't know that, being a Brazilian living in Saudi Arabia.

And considering that it is a world-class, award winning cuisine, it would be a great opportunity.

Not really. Nordic cuisine is what's current at the minute.

I hope someone can help me. Thank you...

Essentially, if you open a limited company, then you can apply for a Karta Pobytu through the company. It has a distinct "legal personality" - so Rhonbarr's Ribs can apply for a work permit for the manager, Rhonbarr. What you can't do is use the company alone to get a Karta Pobytu - you need to be employed by the company in order to get the work permit that will allow you to get the Karta Pobytu.

It's a pretty straightforward process as long as the company is legitimate.

History / Poland's society at communism and socialism time [55]

They often possessed big campings, hotels etc. where they were organizing holidays for the employees

Still happens, but from what I gather, these resorts operate mainly for the benefit of the big bosses of state owned companies these days.

This is why there's a ridiculous myth in Poland that children are "poor" if they can't afford to go on a summer camp. Compare and contrast to the UK, where summer camps are incredibly rare. I'm always amused that 12 year olds here spend their time on camps, while I spent my summers with my friends causing mischief from morning till evening.
