Food / Why is it that some Polish people refuse to eat anything that is not Polish? [120]

Still American though as they are based in Pittsburgh. By producing sth in another country doesn't make it of that country.

I think Poles rate their food very highly and don't see the need to deviate from that. Another reason could be that they see some foreign food as Polish, e.g herring and other fish

Language / seen / saw usage [18]

Polish draws more of a distinction between progressive and non-progressive than between present perfect simple and past simple.

Co robiłeś wczoraj? What were you doing yesterday?

Co zrobiłeś wczoraj? What did you do yesterday?

Polish is very much a contextual language and if you are unsure you just have to ask or glean the meaning from the surrounding context.

It is flexible that way. Oglądać appears to be the most common. Chaza, I was correcting your form only.

English changes tense and Polish changes verb. As noreenb said, there are 3 verbs in play. In English, present perfect simple and past simple. Brits say 'have you eaten yet?' whereas Americans say 'did you eat yet?'. It's just preference.

No, czy simply means whether but is used as a question word too. You've been told this before, right? JustysiaS told you this.

Czy Pan rozumiał co ja mówiłem przed chwilą? Did Sir understand what I said a moment ago?

Nie wiem czy będę póżniej. I don't know if/whether I'll be (along) later.

Czy zobaczyłeś/widziałeś Freda dzisiaj? Or czy spotkałeś się z Fredem dzisiaj?

Nie, it would be jaki film oglądałeś or jaki film Pan oglądał?

Kiedy masz zobaczyć means 'when are you to look?'

Real Estate / Poland Housing prices in July 2010 [129]

Real Polish life is that VAT is likely gonna be 23% and income tax for many is 19%. I've heard from 2 separate high earners just how much they lose. In Japan, they earn much more and their income tax rate is only 6%.

Food / Ribs and Potato's (Patrycja's Mom Recipe) [13]

Thanks, I'll give that a go :) I'll stick with Olbas for now.

Good to have recipes here. I love the sauces that ribs can come with :)

Food / Nothing better than skwarki! [19]

Eggs are so versatile :) I look forward to eating pierogi with those nuggets again. I can't taste a darn thing now due to a cold but the taste is in my mind :)

History / Poland provoked Germany to start WW2 by mobilising first [94]

One big problem was the blunder of Roosevelt in not taking action by conducting air raids from Soviet positions. Stalin refused to comply but America was already helping their war efforts and it is not known what Stalin would have done. The bottom line is that all were in Polish territory so it's not like the Americans would have been encroaching on the Russians. They just didn't value the defence of Poland at all.

Sorry but there were Polish commies, like it or not. Commie parties were there to be seen.

Life / The "Rudification" Of Society - Is This Happening In Poland As Well? [146]

Youth will be youth but there is a softness in many students here in gimnazjum (junior high) and liceum (high school). I've taught them and they don't have the rough edge that a Scottish group typically has. Again, a bit of generalizing but discussions would go nowhere fast without them ;)

Hmm...there is a certain type of young moron that can be found in any country but it's defo not the case here that your average young person, when sober, is more impolite. Not on your nelly! I often get acknowledged for helping in some way but not by the oldies. The Americans that have been here have said that many young Americans can be really brash and that Poles are a step up.

It depends where you go. Go where old people are and rudeness is virtually guaranteed. PKO Bank Polski is a prime location for that.

I've noticed some thank yous on the go but still some glaring omissions. When crossing a makeshift bridge or moving through a tight spot at times when I had the right of way, I've waited and let them come across. No thank you whatsoever, not even a nod.

It happens but I'm trying to focus on the positive aspects and there are some in evidence.

Language / which 'if' (jeśli, gdyż or gdyby) use in conversation? [13]

Jeśli or jeżeli are used in a similar way to the first conditional. The conditional of probability.

Gdybym with other words is for conditionals 2 and 3. Hypothetical/suppositions. Or imaginary in the present (2) or in the past (3).
