News / Poland scored 31 in THE 2014 LEGATUM PROSPERITY INDEX [6]

Poland scored 31th place in Legatum prosperity ranking. It's better than it's GDP suggests. Above: Italy, Cyprus, Slovakia, Estonia, Greece, Chile. In past 5 years Poland was ranked between 28 and 34th place.

Sub indices:

41 Economy
40 Entrepreneurship & Opportunity
39 Governance
31 Education
33 Health
24 Safety & Security
58 Personal Freedom
47 Social Capital

This ranking shows that health in Poland is better than Polish spending on health (perhaps because there are few richer countries with older population). Poland scores high in Safety, but low in Personal Freedom, as they ask there if Poland is good place for immigrants - the country which provides immigrants, not take them. Social capital is relatively low especially because low donation rate.

Life / What are your experiences of care for your loved ones in hospitals here? [75]

Corridors for my wife to weep and hold her head in shame.

Death is nothing to be ashamed of.

problem because of the infamous (criminally low) 9 per cent of GDP spent on Polish healthcare? Discuss.

According to wiki it's even worse - 7%. UK has 9.6%

Life / Health care services in Poland (Wroclaw) - Queues and doctors availablility [5]

Merged: Visit to specialist doctor in Poland without long queue.

I've just found out about this useful NFZ's website. It shows waiting times to specialists in Polish hospitals. Thanks to it it's possible to find facility with shorter waiting time and not wait unnecessarily:

Work / What is the scope of computer programing in Poland (job related) [15]

what about polish extremists?

There was just one case of really life threatening violence in Białystok, when they put entrance door of a house on fire. But the door was extinguished and nobody got hurt. Other worst case which you can expect is that they will beat you. But it's rather unlikely. Poland is not Pakistan and it's save here. I've never heard about killing because of race.

But I also think that for a Muslim Dubai or Turkey should be better countries. For example we don't have Ramadan in Poland and it may be unpleasant to fest while everybody around is eating.

Work / What is the scope of computer programing in Poland (job related) [15]

There are not many Pakistanis in Poland, but people generally don't like Muslims. Some because they're simply different, others because 25% of them are crazy radicals. As for jobs in IT in Poland there is lot of them, but mostly in programming, so don't waste your time applying if it's graphic design.

For those that wish to have a detached house with a garden, this house is only 5 minutes from the sea, has 3 bedrooms and is on the market for 390,000 zl. Its garden is a healthy 226 metres squared.

The forgot to mention that it's a price for 1 floor.

USA, Canada / Polish girlfriend visiting America, what to say at the border? [9]

Are we suspicious in advance because we're from Poland??

Yes, because we are not rich enough and because too many immigrants left Poland to USA illegally. And they prefer illegal immigrants to come through southern border.

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

Poland is richer then at least 50% of the world (by area), but it's also one of the poorest country in the European Union, so many people have negative perspective. It's also one of the poorest countries in OECD: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_OECD_countries_by_GDP_per_capita

UK, Ireland / Uni in the UK - my experiences with British universities [6]

Go on, post something. There was an AMA about difference between studying Engineering in Poland and UK.

in the UK each student has their online profile through which accesses the notes, the latest news from the dean's office, etc.
The two most important options are:
- Access to all notes on a regular basis, complemented by faculty (virtually all of the material that appears in lectures minus the comments lecturers, but pdfs are usually so clear that the comment is not needed)
- Access to the content of the tasks about 90% of all previous exams (yes, this is no joke - you open the folder and you see now scanned sheets of X their last years of the subject which interests you - invaluable source when preparing for exams)

Study / UK and Polish university - is it legal to study at both? [4]

It's legal, except if contract with an University says opposite. Sometimes it says that you need permit, but there is no way they would find out about you studying somewhere else online if you don't tell them.

Law / In Poland on residence card (married to Polish girl) want travel to UK for 2 weeks! [16]

You don't need Visa, but you need to fill some application:

A family member of an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen who is in possession of a residence permit indicating their status is exempt from the requirement to hold a visa when entering the European Union, European Economic Area or Switzerland when they are accompanying their EU/EEA/Swiss family member or are seeking to join them.[65] However the UK requires family members to obtain an EEA Family Permit in order to enter the UK.[66]

Real Estate / Ideas how to invest sum of 500,000ZL in Warsaw - real estate is recommended? [20]

Yes, but money from insurance are/were payed back. Generally some of them are at risk of bankrupcy, so it's better to check them before putting money in order not to have to wait for insurance to give it back (and loose interests). It's like that, because only since 2012 they're under supervision of KNF (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Financial_Supervision_Authority_%28Poland%29) and before it was little bit wild west there.

Real Estate / Buying a property in Poland to rent out from the UK [82]

I'm not saying this is paradise but you really couldn't find that in London.

I think that London is a special case. Warsaw won't look so good in comparison to other big cities in UK.

Real Estate / Ideas how to invest sum of 500,000ZL in Warsaw - real estate is recommended? [20]

SKOK is very general name to describe many institutions. In English it's Credit Union: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credit_union. So saying that SKOKs did not have recently the best press is like saying that banks did not have the best press. Since over a year deposits in SKOKs are insured up to 100 000 eur in the same way as deposits in banks. So if a SKOK has good financial condition, then it's the same save as any small bank. Last year mentioned by me SKOK Wołomin had an audit and results were very good. I am not an employee of this SKOK, simply I have a deposit there, that's why I know that :)

Study / How do Polish universities compare with those of other Central/Eastern European countries? [7]

You have the ability to penetrate people's mind as they choose Poland as the backdoor to EU, just for lower cost.

Point out where I've said something like that? I've just simply guessed that you would like to study cheap in Europe as most of foreign students want.

Why are you lack of confidence?

WTF?

I think you should be proud of the best universities in your country.

If you know so much about Polish universities, then why do you ask questions?

And i wonder if there is an out-of-balance of education resources which causes the fact that those are pathetic who cannot go to best universities?

I have no idea what you're trying to say.

In my opinion,Poland is Poland, not the cheap alternatives of western europe and German universities are best with no ranking.

Of course Poland is cheap alternative to Germany. If you want to have European experience, then for Chinese Poland must be much more similar to Germany then for example Singapur (except that poorer)

If I have the chance to learn Polish, it will be much better than so-called most important slavic language Russian which is very popular in our country.I hate Russia!

So why don't you start your question with information that you want to come to Poland in order to learn Polish? Quite opposite you're asking about universities in the whole region of eastern Europe.

It seems that also many students from west europe even US choose to study medicine in Poland, do these Medical Courses taught in English also sucks?

Also?

Real Estate / Ideas how to invest sum of 500,000ZL in Warsaw - real estate is recommended? [20]

As to buy & rent flat in Warsaw - do you know someone who made such investment and knows about the costs (taxes, lawyers fee, maintenance etc) vs. potential income/profit?

Study my link to the blog. there are all information you need: jakoszczedzacpieniadze.pl

As to Athens option - do you have a link to some website of such real estate for investment? (better without agencies)

property-greece.spiti24.gr/Athens/house_sale-Athens.html

As to Bank deposit - you are saying that nowadays banks in Warsaw gives about annual 3.6% (after deduction of tax)? and for what period it should be closed in bank and no options to draw?

I couldn't write more clearly that it is after tax, why do you ask again? Such interests are just in few banks with top rates. For example:

go here: skok.wolomin.pl/201/Artukuly/Zalogowano_do_strony_SKOK enter password: SKOK2014 click: "rozszerzonej oferty" and see for example

"Lokata rentierska NOWA"
12 miesięcy 4,50 %
23 miesiące 4,60 %
36 miesięcy 4,70 %
It's fixed for 1,2 or 3 years. If you quit before then get only 10% of interests. This is gross value of course.

UK, Ireland / Do people in Poland live "better" than here in the UK? [150]

Not sure what your second post is trying to show. People beg in the United States, UK and Germany, some of the richest countries in the world.

Only because they are allowed to and often its easier to beg than work for your salary. My post was supposed to show, that Poland is not one of the poorest place on planet, where you cannot sustain yourself with work.

UK, Ireland / Do people in Poland live "better" than here in the UK? [150]

In some ways I would expect the begging to be worse in Poland as the levels of poverty in Poland and the UK are not comparative.

It has nothing to do with level of poverty as we're talking about rich european countries. It's about enforcing the law and not allowing people to do that. Everybody in Poland has chance to earn at least for food (which is by the way provided for free to homeless) if is not seriously disabled.

According to
globalrichlist.com
a person earning minimum salary in Poland - 14844zł net per year is in the top 18.50% richest people in the world by income.

Real Estate / Ideas how to invest sum of 500,000ZL in Warsaw - real estate is recommended? [20]

I guess she thinks that "normal flats" are not real estate :) Currently the best interests from bank deposits are at 5%, but more likely 4.5%. For example here skok.wolomin.pl The tax from deposits is 19% from the profit, so the real gain is 81% from 4.5% = 3.6%.

As for buying for renting in Warsaw it's perhaps not a bad idea, because Warsaw as the capital has the biggest chance for prices to rise and it's already over 6th year of prices going down, so they should soon go up ;) But if you omit this important fact, then Katowice has better return from rent.

If you can read Polish or can do with google translation then here is the most popular blog about investing in apartments (also in Warsaw) and generally saving money: jakoszczedzacpieniadze.pl

Personally I would encourage you to buy an apartment in Athens. The prices of some apartments dropped to ridiculous levels. There are good condition studios to buy from 5000 eur.
