History / Lech Kaczynski - was he a good leader? [88]

Jaroslaw (Tinkerbell) Kaczynski

I hope you are not suggesting that the (soon-to-be Great Leader) is gay. If so, please do not use such homophobic epithets. JK is a God-fearing, red-blooded man, and his love of pusssies should be ample evedence of that.

UK, Ireland / Unemployed Poles in Ireland : a crash course in milking the system [323]

24,000 gypos in Ireland.

Who the hell are these gypos, as you call them? Aren't they Irish people like yourself? I grew up in a part of London where there was a camp down the road with what in those days were called tinkers or pikies, and a lot of them were Irish. We rubbed along alright most of the time, except for the odd time when there was a break-in and they were, of course, blamed (a story a thousand years old).

Food / Decent Polish Ale or Lager? [27]

Not outside the Warka area.

They have it round our way and we're a long way from the brewery.

Podlasie dancers on the Żywiec label

I thought they were highlanders. Podlasie traditional costume is quite different as far as I know.

Food / Decent Polish Ale or Lager? [27]

Are you Polish or living in Poland?

I'm a Londoner who's been here for a while now. English beer is one of the few things I miss about the old country. Polish lager is fine when it's fresh. There's a good range of interesting dark beers and wheat beers. Well worth checking out the supermarket shelves.

Why would holding the door open for someone be offensive when it is only being polite?

It's not offensive, just not done as much here as in other countries. It might be something to do with keeping doors closed in cold weather.

Apparently in parts of Russia it is offensive.

Just being alive is offensive to Russian shop assistants.

Food / Decent Polish Ale or Lager? [27]

is saying 'please' not a done thing?

Is there anywhere in the world where it's not?
Although it's a bit sweet for me, try Warka Strong on tap. If you're coming to the big cities (for the footer?) you'll be able to find all sorts in the Irish and English pubs. You won't go thirsty. Harry's the Polish Forums beer guide. He'll probably be along in a while.

UK, Ireland / WHAT IS IT ABOUT POLISH PEOPLE THAT MAKES THEM THINK THAT UK WANTS THEM? [309]

That's right, and that's not all. Mods and admin have defended the staus quo by saying that some people are just popping in for specific information. So, let them spend a minute registering and then PF gets more members, admin gets more google ads, trolls can be quickly exterminated and everybody wins. Am I missing something?

Life / Letter-mail international Forwarding and redirection with Poczta Polska in Poland? [17]

Poczta Polska are really the bastions of knowledge on all things Postal...

Such faith is heart-warming.

Sure any Pole knows that employees are really helpful and service -oriented in Poczta Polska.

Highly trained in customer care. Not.

One fat b1tch from Poczta Polska told me I spell my name wrongly.

Another one didn't know where Scotland was, until her colleague told her it was in England.

Language / Useful tips on learning Polish? [25]

I guess it's that old perception some people have that if we're from, e.g. the UK, we must be loaded.

It works out as about £5 per hour per student.

That sounds fair for 1-1 lessons but not if you have to listen to 11 others mangling the Polish language!
Why not try to find someone competent who can give you individual lessons? You could negotiate a fair rate if you offered to help them with their English.

Language / Useful tips on learning Polish? [25]

700zl for 60 hours. So I stopped going. Far too expensive

12/hr expensive? I can't see how they can offer classes at that price. I'd feel lucky to be able to attend.

Life / Living Costs and life in Poznan? [70]

I dropped twice that much on a meal for two last week, food and two drinks each!).

Blimey. How the other half live! 700 for a meal? What did you have?

Which sum up to : 3900PLN.

Sounds reasonable, but you shouldn't assume you're going to walk into a job within a month. I'm inclined to agree with Harry's idea of sticking around for a while and saving up a bigger stake so you can look for a job without living on the bones of your arse, as Mother Theresa was fond of saying.

Love / 'Seks po polsku' - the sex lives of Poles: [45]

Sex educatoon is even taboo in Poland.

Where did you hear that?

Poles are very conservative about talking about sex.

Untrue.

Sex is very taboo in Poland

Untrue.

ultra-religious catholic beliefs

Ultra? Get real. You have extremely limited experience of Poles and Poland. A stag night in Kraków does not constitute a deep knowledge of the country.

News / Should countries be boycotted for offending Poles? [60]

It's the same across Europe. There's no denying some Polish have taken advantage and rip off the system, and seem to feel no shame in doing so but they're the smaller element of a much wider problem that affects everyone here, Irish and Pole alike.

A realistic and balanced view. Are you sure you've found the right forum? Just kidding, and welcome.

Work / Minimum basic salary in Poland [96]

I'm not trying to defend them. In fact I boycotted them for four years. That showed 'em.

Work / Minimum basic salary in Poland [96]

After the working conditions in Biedronka became common knowledge no one on their right mind would agree to work 12-hour shifts and unpaid overtimes for 975zł any longer.

That was years ago; things have improved. What upset me was their decision to lock their rubbish bins/dumpsters, which they regularly fill with good food that is just outside its sell-by date. Staff used to put this stuff on top of the bins so the poor could collect it.

USA, Canada / Did Polish-Americans flee the Dustbowl? [2]

I'm doing some research on the mass migrations caused by the 1930's Dustbowl catastrophe that affected 400,000km2 of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, along with parts of New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas. I understand that there were some Poles in these parts who had arrived in the 1850's, following larger German immigration.

The course I'm putting together is on the theme of protest through popular song, and I wondered if any PF-ers had any family history of being among the largest displacement in US history (by 1940 2.5m out of the great plains). Any other resources on protest songs from this period would be greatly appreciated (not my hero Woody, though - got loads.) Thanks.

Work / Minimum basic salary in Poland [96]

Easy enough - any of us can do it.

Fiddly job picking out the Colorado beetles, though. My father-in-law tells me the CIA dropped them. Don't know how he knows this, but as they dropped Agent Orange he could be right. Off to the lounge with me.

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

there are shiitholes like this all over the world

Exactly, but hey

Bialystok

my turf, and a fine up-and-coming place which has seen amazing progress in the last ten years, especially since the previous corrupt President was ousted. Come and have a look. A great place. Don't you dare say Poland B!

Love / Getting married in Poland (papers stating we are eligible to get married?) Certificate of no impediment. [24]

But the problem in Poland is that there's a lot of "look at me, I paid 4.5k for a band".

It's not like that in this case. These are normal folk, and the price is about average. You can get a band for 2000 but it's likely to be a guy with a keyboard and his pal helping out. In the wedding season the bands are fully booked, and often work Friday-Sunday, so I'm told it's a good idea to get married on a Friday so the musicians are fresh!

Don't forget that these guys are expected to perform for over eight hours. So it's not such a big payday if three musicians work all night.

Travel / Driving in Poland, are there any rules at all? [149]

Agree. Polish drivers are nowhere near as bad as they are painted on this forum. I won't post the links to lists of road deaths worldwide as I was attacked by a berk when I did it last time, but anyone who has travelled a bit knows that Poland is ok. You certainly couldn't say that you take your life in your hands on the roads here.
