UK, Ireland / Crying Polish truck driver on British roads is Internet hit [269]

He didn't really squeal like a spoiled brat, but I do agree that watching anyone weep is rather bothersome. As for his suppossed lack of professionalism,,are truck drivers' supposed to have no emotions? Is stoicism really comme il faut for that proffession? I say cut the guy some slack.p3undone: .I'm not trying tomake you look like an authoritarian square.

au contraire. He was acting like a spoiled brat caught with his hand in the cookie jar. When mommy caught him he began to whine like a brat. He was surprised and frustrated that it wasn't working thus intensifying his whine.

Rybnik chalking his actions up to "laziness" makes you sound like one of these uptight withered Protestant British types, besides which you don't really know if that is the truth though, do you?

I do know this: a truck driver of his many years of experience (by his own account) would have known better. I'm assuming he is a professional and that he knew better. Hence my lazy descriptor. He literally took a shortcut and got caught. Btw I'm an atheist ;)

.My point was he got a ticket and went on his wayNo big deal. It's to bad that it had to be all over the tv and internet.

agreed

Rybnik do you think it's possible that he may have been worried because of the knife?

yes it's possible

I think he thought he was going to get arrested and cried;understandable;he wasn't.He got a ticket and went on his way.

I wasn't convinced. I work in a prison and am subjected to the best manipulators our society can muster. Stasiu wasn't convincing. He's done this before. What got him going was the fact that the cops were'nt buying his act. He knew all along it was about a ticket and nothing more. Stasiu thought he'd skombinowac his way out of it but it didn't work.

I don't know if you've ever been hungry and had your dinner interupted but I suspect that if some people, who weren't bacon, had interupted that hungry driver's repast he'd have told them where to go and maybe even showed them physyically, but the fact that they were coppers meant that he couldn't and so he wept out of frustration

He's a grown man, not a peripubecent girl on her first period! For a "professional" of many years you'd think he would plan his pit stops more thoughtfully. Truth is, he was lazy, pulled over and when caught went into his "why are you persecuting me" routine.....I would not be so surprised if a novice truck driver acted that way but for a grown man of so many years experience to squeal like a little spoiled brat is simply revolting to watch. Wstyd! Shame on Stasiu.

he messed up;man up,take your ticket and move on.That's what I say.Where it happened and where he was from is inconsequential

Yes

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

What you see in print may not necessarily reflect the reality of spoken language in Poland.

Thanks Ziemovit.
I heard them on the TV yesterday during an interview.

Life / Wroclaw Stadium and the Queen gig. [20]

can't see the point of watching them now especially with the useless selection of vocalists that they choose.

Paul Rodgers certainly wasn't a useless selection

Life / Wroclaw Stadium and the Queen gig. [20]

the only problem with queen is that they carry freddie wherever they go. he has been dead more than twenty years. it's time to move on.many other bands have replaced vocalists without fuss.

I was surprised when you said they showed the "Freddie film". I agree it's time to move on

Life / Wroclaw Stadium and the Queen gig. [20]

Yesterday Queen + Adam Lambert played Wroclaw's stadium.

So are you saying you liked the show?
That's great the Wroclaw booked the gig! How full was the stadium?
How many such events do they figure the venue needs to stay solvent?

Genealogy / my Polish Grandfather in Hitler Youth? HOW? [65]

Our POW cages were filled with foreign conscripts

Right! My uncle from Upper Silesian was one of those POWs. He used to brag that he once visited the US - as a POW in Oklahoma! lol

Life / Individualism in Polish culture...Is it almost Nonexistant? [170]

I'm sorry Gruffi if I've offended you.

I1) I never said anything about the quality of education during the PRL days. In fact I was very impressed with it during my stay.

2) Being fluent in a language doesn't automatically make you a good teacher. Especially, if the teachers have never spent any meaningful time in an English speaking country.

I'm only reporting what I experienced in Wrocław. In my six years I failed to meet any student who spoke good English. I don't think it's fair to blame it all on lazy, underachieving students. They, after all, made it to med(dental) school.

Do you know German and Russian fluently yourself? If not, those teacher's performance might have been enhanced by the fact that you weren't in a position to see any mistakes they might have made and / or pronunciation problems they might have had

good point Magdalena. I am not fluent in either language so, of course, I wouldn't be in a position to evaluate. But our native Russian and German speaking fellow-students were. It was by their accounts over my seven years that I came to my conclusion

English WAS widely taught before 1990

agreed. Accessible it was. My point is when compared to the German and Russian teachers, the English teachers "work" was not on the same level. ie the quantity of teaching might've been there (I still doubt that Kuba na wsi would've had an English teacher but he most definitely had a Russian one) BUT not the quality.

They did have some good stuff in East Germany

Praktica cameras with the Zeiss lens!

So Polish tourists were dirt poor then. But then some would trade goods, some would work for few weeks a time then continue travelling

yes

One could travel West if he/she was not considered a threat to the system

yep

One had a freedom to do almost anything but plotting against "komuna". Theater, Philharmonic, student cabarets with political subtext, western movies, kayaking, trekking, sport, dining out, visiting, getting drunk and talking politics with your friends

true

Poland, with a score of 60 is an Individualistic society.

I spent most of my time from '78 - '85 in Silesia. I just wasn't impressed with how the students, any of them,
could speak. vocab, grammar, annunciation, etc all very weak BUT how they could szprechac' in German and Russian. Now that was impressive!
