Love / Birth Certificate Questions (Polish rules require the mother to put down a Polish name?) [27]

When mother is married- easy.
When she's not we have few options:
the father and mother agree that man is the father. Father admits his parenthood and mother puts him in the certificate.
the father doesn't want to admit it/ mother doesn't want him there and so on- court case
mother says she doesn't know who the father is and so on- her name is put as the father's name and some random popular first name is put in the certificate.

News / Polish police chief removes crosses [250]

What about the 1000 years of Poland with crosses? Does history mean anything to you?

Then why not pogan signs? Poland was pogan earlier than Catholic. But seriously- history is important but it shouldn't have place in political and public life this way. Neither should religion.

why does it matter to you, whether something meaningless (in your opinion) as crosses, will be removed from Poland or not? I mean, if it doesn't mean anything to you then why worry about it, right? Just ignore it, don't look at it.

Because the government and it's institutions should care about all the citizens, not only the majority. When a person walks into police station I want her/him feel confident into it's fairness no matter what hungs around his/her neck- a cross, star of David or moon and the star. I want parents to send their kids to school knowing that the children won't be pushed into some religious things. Crosses on the walls are giving absolutely wrong impression.

It's about principle- to represent all Poles (all religious signs) and not mixing political and religious life (no signs at all) . If someone has private shop- let him put whatever one wants but not in places run by the state.

And to reverse question- why I as an atheist should be forced into being treated (in public hospital), questioned at the police station and so on in the rooms with crosses? Why should it not matter to me? It's not meaningless- I know it represents Catholics so why should I ignore it? And why can't Catholics ignore other religious signs next to it?

Gazeta Wyborcza tells her crosses must go. In the name of progress, tolerance, and bolshevik ideals. Plus crosses are fascist. And lead to Holocausts.

Original!!! Good try but no, I read it only few times and bought it only when they had CD's with PIT or cheap books. Keep trying tough :)

News / Polish police chief removes crosses [250]

so why punish so many people just to make happy a few?

Hmm, we never had any referendum or something like that on the cross. My mum is Catholic and she too thinks cross has no place in public space, the same goes for my brother and his wife. Who knows how many ppl think like that? The mere fact we have majority of Catholics doesn't mean they all want the crosses in Sejm and schools.

Oh, ppl can believe what they want. I don't even mind when they wake me up in the morning with some singing and praying when having a little pilgrime (always goes right outside my window) but as to the crosses in public places I'm pro "all or none".

News / Polish police chief removes crosses [250]

W 2011 roku liczba osób ochrzczonych przez polski Kościół katolicki, wynosząca 33 399 328, stanowiła 86,66% populacji Polski, szacowanej na 38 538 447 osób (In 2011 the number of ppl baptised by Polish Catholic Church was 86,66% of the society of Poland)

Hmm, interesting. Although it's true around 90% declare themselfs as Catholics "only" 86,66% of society is baptised. So no, it's probably less than 80% of Catholics in Poland.

Church itself says it's less:
Według Instytutu Statystyki kościoła Katolickiego wierzący katolicy stanowią 60,8% ludności Polski ( The Institute of Statistics of Catholic Church says believing Cathilics make for 60,8% of the population of Poland)

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kościół_katolicki_w_Polsce

Not that any of this matters in the discussion about crosses in public space anyway.

I don't live in Warsaw. I don't even live in a big city. I live in a small town and although it's right the majority is Catholic I wouldn't say it's even 90% let alone 99.

Hm, it's hard for me to believe in that number as well. Especially among younger ppl, like teenagers. The last time I saw statistics it was something like 86% of Poles registered in the RCC and among that number we also have ppl that want to leave the church (like me and 4 other ppl in my family). But as I said- I'm not sure one way or the other.

UK, Ireland / Advice on child support (Irish with my Polish husband) [106]

Sorry but 150 zl is just laughable even if temporary. 350 is better but not too much. As I said- the 500- 600 is aproximately and I doubt any judge would make it less especially if he's getting 6000 there. The 1000 is not impossible.

It is not an attack on the OP but simple truth. And the mother of the first kid has the right not to give a s... about his problems and expect him to pay full ammount every month.

350 zl is very low. 500- 600 is the standard usually. The court will look how much he earns and make his decission based on that. and seriously- 350 zl is not even 100 pounds a month!!!

Genealogy / Polish blood only makes up 1% of your "Polishness" [77]

I was there Goofy and Mocha got banned because I said stop and she didn't listen. But if I was to determine you are the one who should apologise.

Mocha, you do come across as American and that's probably how you'll be received in Poland. But it doesn't matter- what matters is what you feel and what you do. And your feelings as well as actions (learning Polish, the culture and so on) suggest that you know exactly how to make such silly attacks look well...silly.

Well, yes, that would be my choice as well but I do understand ppl want to display the signs of their beliefs so I really wouldn't mind if all religious signs were on Sejm's wall

Well, I absolutely agree with the police chef- all religions or none at all on the wall. Notice that I as atheist won't have any sign but I wouldn't have any problems if all religions recognised in Poland had signs in public places..

Law / Non-Polish Fathers rights for child in Poland [19]

They wholly believe what they write in return to the court, and the judge will defend them mercilessly

Well, it's lousy but still better than it was. I know a case when a 5 yo was asked by the judge with the presence only of the father there "What did Daddy do to Mummy that she had to leave you". As you can imagine the child said "Nothing" even though the father was an abusing ....... Beating the **** out of the mother and sexually abusing his kids. Now at least there is a psychologist.

News / Tomasevski makes an idiot out of himself yet again [28]

As for the banner being the same - you do realise that Poles do have a superiority complex over Lithuanians? Telling Lithuanians (especially from Vilnius) to bow down to their masters sounds entirely normal for Poles.

Your desire to win the argument sometimes takes the better of you. While some Poles may think that way it's in no way true for majority.

Mods, perhaps this entire off-topic rant should go bye bye?

True. Go back to discussing taking off the cross. For the other posts we have Atheism vs Christianity thread.

Feedback / Warning for posters who have been changing the names of famous Polish politicians, celebrities, etc. [90]

Lately we have had a large number of posts in which posters have been changing the names of commonly known Polish people. At first it might have been funny but it has gone too far. The changing of names has mainly been used to wind up one's adversaries and that usually leads to off-topic arguments. Moreover it's misleading to any newcomers that want to get to know Polish politics and all of a sudden see 'Duck', 'Jabberwocky' etc. I think we are all capable of discussing different matters without such cheap shots. So I want to say that after discussing it with other moderators that we have decided that posts containing such remarks will be binned and if those posters continue with that practise it will end in a suspension.

Life / Przystanek Jezus to the rescue [47]

they are called brainwashed...

I call brainwashed ppl brainwashed- no matter which side.

Maybe you didn't notice but I see both sides equally cool:

We can all co exist and there is no need for making it a battle. Let's have both Przystanek Woodstock and Przystanek Jesus peacefully with respect for ppl choices.

You are the one who only accepts one side
