Travel / Hostel in Kraków (clean, inexpensive, central location, fast commute, quiet) [18]

Dear PF-users,

My friend asked me if I know any good hostel in Krakow. I don't. Buy maybe someone else here knows? :)

Quote:

"The ideal would be:
Clean and not too expensive.
Rather central, or good and fast communications to the centre.
Not too loud (like 25 m from a big night club or railway)
"

Thanks a lot in advance!

Enjoy the summer :)

Life / What are the poorest regions of Poland? [15]

how come you can't find anything about that online...?

That GDP table is 10 years old. However, as expected, the regions with the big economically important cities do best.

Most bigger cities do quite well. But almost all of the Polish countryside is still poor. The difference between Eastern and Western Poland is not very big. Except from the fact that there are a few more big cities in West.

Life / Car Crime in Poland [28]

I usually park in secure "security" car parks

I always park in secured parking

If you do that not much can happen. But I think we are talking about normal parking on a normal street, which also is rather safe in many parts of Poland.

Just get to know the place where you park, and make a short analysis. There are many factors affecting this.

I know where to park and where to avoid parking in my city.

Language / Czego, Czemu, Co, Kto, Jak, Dlaczego? [64]

Actually I didn't think about it before. But all Poles say "O co panu/pani/ci chodzi?" in this situation.

Literary it means "About what are you going?". It doesn't make sense in English, but in Polish it does make sense.

But you use "znaczy" when you define what words mean, and in most other situations.

Dobry wieczor!

If you drive a very expensive car with foreign reg. plates the risk is higher.

Language / Czego, Czemu, Co, Kto, Jak, Dlaczego? [64]

As you say co=what, jak=how, sometimes Jaki/Jaka/Jakie (see below).

But there are expressions in all languages that can't be translated word-by-word into for example English. This means we get exceptions from the rule above.

One of these exceptions is "what kind of" / "what sort of". As you said above. Here Polish uses Jak or Jaki/Jaka/Jakie.

Jak is not declined. It's used when you refer to a verb.
Jak się pan nazywa? (verb)

Jaki/Jaka/Jakie is declined as an adjective (both gender and case). It's used when you refer to an adjective.
Jaka to jest książka? (adjective)

How to decline Co:
Nom. & Acc: Co
Gen: Czego
Dat: Czemu
Instr. & Loc: Czym

This is commonly used with prepositions that governs the different cases.

What do you mean?

O co panu/pani/ci chodzi?

Love / Are there Polish women who date black guys? [281]

Polish girls are prone to engage in relationships with dark people.

Compared to?

I've lived 3 years in Poland. I see very few Polish women with black men in Poland.

Maybe it's different with Polish girls living abroad (and those on vacation). But here it's very uncommon.

However I have seen some relationships with Arabs (in the biggest cities).

Travel / Trains in Poland - Poznan to Gdansk [9]

Warszawa Centralna (for Warsaw)
Gdańsk Główny (for Gdansk)

She asked about Poznań-Gdańsk.

I recommend you to choose EIC. TLK have lover standard and having no reserved coach is ridiculous.

I disagree. The difference in comfort is not very big. What you pay for is that EIC has newer trains. However, the difference in price is big. If you don't care about money you can choose EIC of course. But TLK is comfortable enough for everyone I know. And about reservation, how often is the TLK between Poznań-Gdańsk full? Not often, maybe sometimes on friday/sunday in the afternoon/evening.

Travel / Trains in Poland - Poznan to Gdansk [9]

rozklad-pkp.pl/?q=en/node/143 - Here you can search in English

It takes about 5.5-6.0 hours. But some takes much longer time, so be careful. Costs about 50 zl (5 €) in 2nd class.

When you buy a ticket, write/draw on a paper that is easy to understand, use your imagination. They probably don't speak English.

Real Estate / Relocating in Poland - what's the best area? [56]

Sure, but suburban rail isn't too good in Warsaw

It's good if you want to go between the centre and the suburbs where most people live. And the towns located on the boarder to Warsaw.

If you want to travel inside the central parts, buses and trams are better.

In my opinion the public transport in Wawa works well.

Real Estate / Relocating in Poland - what's the best area? [56]

The park infront of the castle (in Bialystok) was amazing

That park was twice as beautiful one year ago. Now they are rebuilding a lot of things there, it doesn't look so nice in my opinion.

Just wait until next summer, it will look great.

However Aleja zakochanych in the park is great, with its fountains.

Travel / Longhaul coach connections in Poland [4]

Beats me by the way why anybody would like to spend hours on a coach, I already get travelsick before even having left Warsaw :)

How anyone can choose Polish buses instead of trains is impossible to understand. They will probably change their mind quickly when the see the reality (and safety features). There are many private companies driving between different cities. From Wawa you can go to many cities by bus. But there are many small companies, so it's difficult to get a good overview.

Some programs are good in Poland. But USA's education system is better, but much more expensive.

News / Will Komorowski be Poland's worst ever president? [72]

Now the sale of Polands prized companies to foreigners will start in earnest- making the rich even wealthier and the poor to face rising bills from profiteering foreign companies.

Competition between many companies almost always lowers the average prices. All educated people know that.

Travel / what are the average fares to Poland from USA? [10]

Go to Western Europe and get a seperate flight from there. It's extremely cheap. Prices vary but it can sometimes be as cheap as 50-60 USD.

Good idea. From WE you can get much better deals if you look around for a while.

Genealogy / Village near Lancut [15]

It might have changed name. This was quite common in Poland. And he was born over 100 years ago.

maybe £ańcut?

Yes, I'm rather sure about that. But it doesn't answer the main question.

News / Komorowski won Poland's presidency vote? [125]

Kaczynski has congratulated Komorowski as the new president.

Kaczynski: we need to be mobilized
- Dear, ladies and gentlemen, I have to start from what you require good habit: I congratulate the winner, I congratulate Bronislaw Komorowski - Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
I like PO and Tusk. They have an economically liberal view on economy, but still wants a solid welfare system.

And their views on culture and tradition are moderate and well-balanced.

Life / Small change in shops in Poland!? [95]

This is a phenomena from from the commie time. There were no competition between the grocery stores, i.e. people bought items where they were available. No competition means you don't need to be nice to your customers. They can't go to another shop if they're not happy.

I was signing receipts in Poland for at least 2 years after chip and pin came in in the UK.

It depends on which bank issued your card. Not only if you have VISA or Mastercard or whatever. Especially if it's a foreign bank who issued the VISA/Mastercard. It's really strange. But sometimes you have to sign even if you have PIN-code.

Travel / Travel by Motorcycle in Poland (cost, distance, risk?) [47]

There are many beautiful and fun MC-roads in Poland. But rather dangerous ones.

Białystok (translated means white slope) is where they make Żubrówka vodka.

Very characteristic and nice taste. And as everybody says, it mixes excellently with apple juice.

I drank several bottle before I discovered that there is a straw of grass in every bottle.
