Language / How similar are Polish and Romanian languages? [75]

How similar?

put it this way I have been there a few times on business and although I speak good Polish, I could not understand a bloomin word

having said that, there are linguists who talk about the similarities between Finnish and Hungarian
try putting a Finn and a Hungarian in a room together and you will find that these similarities are largely academic

Travel / What are some of the "must do" activities when visiting Poland? [43]

It will be a spirited affair

for the benefit of our American friend, Wisla and Krakowie hate each
and I mean really hate each other to the extent that the Krakowie hooligan firm are called Anti-Wisla

seeing the Krakow derby will be something to tell your grandkids about

if you see lots of people invading the pitch, it is best not to join in

For4: I was being ironic in part, as ball bearings fired from catapults & blow pipe darts are generally considered to be bad form
I wonder how long it will be until they start throwing apples at each other
how innocuous you think as an apple flies overhead right up to the moment you catch it and find it is full of razor blades

good heavens in at attack of dyslexia I have realised I wrote Krakowie, I meant Cracovie

oh the shame

UK, Ireland / Disgusting, fat and lying Polish women and Illegal immigration in UK [73]

The title used for this thread insinuates that someone has a problem with Polish people

it depends, the OP wants to come to Poland on holiday and claim welfare whilst she is here
she is a parasite

then again Miss Litwin is not exactly a shining example of humanity either

Travel / Tips/suggestions/do's and don't of going to Poland....? [55]

great idea

come on everyone, let's teach the lad a new phrase every day and in the one to two years until he comes to Poland, he will be fluent

rather than give the impression that I am making fun of the young tyke, I would like to start his online education

dziendobry
pronounced gin 'as in mother's ruin' - dobry

it means hello, literally good morning but can be used at any time of the day or night to any social group

at this rate we ought to have you being able to discuss the US foreign intervention policy in the 1970s in fluent Polish by some time in the spring

oil myself with a light coat of baby oil man and glisten all day in sun wearing my birthday suit

that conjures up a mental image that I am not entirely comfortable with

in any case, I confirm that the military museum in Warsaw is one of the best in the world
and you ought to go to the Jewish cemetary, you can walk amongst the thousands of Jewish graves and ponder

the tomb of the unknown soldier does not warrant a special visit

Kazimierz Dolny is a bus ride from Lublin and is a must see
you are American, it is full of old buildings, it will blow your mind

They disgust me!

but you feel perfectly OK about going to holiday to Poland and trying to claim dole here (if you think I am trolling, just check her previous posts)

get used to it honey, you don't like Asians, Australia is filling up with them

better get that Urdu phrasebook you have always been promising yourself for Christmas

....keep lounging doley

persistant fellow aren't you?

in another thread you mentioned coming to Poland in a few years time

you certainly believe in forward planning don't you?
not a young man for leaving things to chance I can see

there are bank robberies planned with far less attention to detail than your journey to Poland

get a copy of the Rough Guide to Poland, read it and then buy a ticket

you are not going to get murdered if you come to Poland, you will not be the victim of racist attacks

come on, level with me, tell your Uncle Hythorn, what is your agenda here?
you stated that you were planning a visit in a few years times
do you plan everything with this much care and attention?

A trip to the shops could take you days of prior logistic planning otherwise
as for a weekend trip to the seaside, it could be preceded by weeks of preparation

Life / Ideas for constructive Immigration methods for Poland. [30]

Why are white countries the only ones in this world that allow mass immigration from third world hell holes?

what is the name of tarnation do Poles have to feel guilty about?
did Poles wipe out American Indian tribes... erm nope
did Poles have colonies in Africa... erm another resounding no

Why are homogeneous countries like Japan doing just fine?
No immigration.

oh they are doing just dandy
their economy tanked in the early 90s and still has not recovered

rather than spending billions of euros trying to keep immigrants out, why not spend some of that money trying to
create stability in their home countries?
half the people from Sierre Leone in Europe would not be there if it were not for the fact that they would have had their hands

chopped off if they had stayed at home.
Better an emigree than an amputee, I always say

and what when they have kids? the kids won't know if they are Polish or African or Tupac Shakur

Europe is filling up with immigrants but we are not being selective in the ones we are taking and are doing nothing
to stem the flow by trying to stabilise their home countries

Love / Do young Polish ladies 17-23 speak any English? [59]

Just remember any Pole that chooses to speak to you in English is doing you a favor. Even if they speak the language they're under no obligation to do so.

precisely, hence the opening gambit to allow our 'smooth' young friend to mingle with those ladies
if they do not want to take him up on his kind offer they simply have to feign a non-understanding of the Queen's English

If it had been switched on in the first place Id never have got bogged down with this pointless thread :)

but it is never pointless. it gives an opportunity for witty banter and the exchange of views.
hopefully the young man in question will return to the forum and give us an account of his knock backs

I tell a pretend cocky young half caste

oh I say Sir, there is really no need for this approach is there?

leave the young gentleman to his own devices and I am sure he will prevail

He was asking a rather sensible question. I have had black friends ask me if Somerset is safe
and as he is only 17 years old, he can be forgiven a certain amount of bravado

Love / Do young Polish ladies 17-23 speak any English? [59]

I understand, it's not me that's saying my skin will give me a boost, it may turn heads.

you will do fine. A good opening line is always 'do you speak English'

the local girls are just bound to fall for your charms

if all else fails there are ladies towards the upper end of the 17 to 23 age bracket to be found congregating on ul Poznanska in Warsaw

oh to be young again...

Travel / What are some of the "must do" activities when visiting Poland? [43]

What time of the year will you be visiting Poland?

a good question, as the gentleman is from Florida and may not be used to freezing his gonads off in the midst of a Polish winter

Both of those camps are far more powerful than the Disneyland that Auschwitz has been turned into

you are no doubt referring to the Donald Dachau studio that is Auschwitz
I found Birkenau to be more powerful than Auschwitz

Majdanek is rather grim and feels cold irrespective of what time of year you visit it
but if you are in Lublin in any case, it is just a hop skip and a jump from the centre

wrap up warm

Krakow and Zakopane would be enough for any trip

you can add a trip to Auschwitz if you think you can handle it

using Krakow as a base you can do a day trip to Warsaw or Katowice by train if time allows

using Lublin as a base you can indeed do Zamosc , perhaps ever Kazmierz Dolny and it is very easy to get to Warsaw

Life / Ideas for constructive Immigration methods for Poland. [30]

a good topic

there ought to be a points system
education, ability to speak the language, lack of criminal record, money in the bank count for you

what gets my goat is asylum seekers claiming that they have to leave their home country for fear of
being killed but then six months later return to that country to go on holiday.

does nobody think that this is a bit odd?

expanding on Lodz's original theme it would be good for the universities to work in closer cooperation with
local employers and build links

the employer gains by getting some free low level consultancy and can get the pick of the litter by hiring the brightest students
and the student actually does something practical for once

I know it happens in Warsaw with the university and some of the more enlightened employers but they are mainly just after interns

Law / What are chances for Poland to join in Eurasian Economic Community? [100]

We are trying to keep it on topic
however as I do not know much about Yugoslavian history, Crow is trying to explain some of things that went on post WWII

you see, I know loads of stories about Poles suffering under Russians but I was not aware that Yugoslavia suffered too
much under Russia as in the West we are taught that Tito more or less kept them out

which would explain why Serbia might want to form closer bonds with Russia and Poland would be more wary
however Crow is kindly explaining that Serbia suffered under Russia which is something I had not heard about

Law / What are chances for Poland to join in Eurasian Economic Community? [100]

No. Those were Serbs that were power of Yugoslavia. Tito relied on Serbians and on Serbian animosity on Russian failure to the absolutely totalitarian way of communism.

I do not know a lot about Yugoslavian history but would you agree that Russia's influence in Yugoslavia post WWII was not that great as in other countries in Central Europe?

And would you also say that Yugoslavians in general were not so badly harmed by Russia as other countries?
