Life / Your favorite Chopin piece / Chopin Competition in Poland [23]

Greatest, i.e. most satisfying, performances to date of Chopin's waltzes and mazurkas are by Dinu Lipatti! All else, of course, by the Polish-American pianist Josef (Joźió) Kazimierz Hofmann, including the Nocturnes and Etudes:-)

Genealogy / How many Jews lived in Poland and did they ever convert to catholicism, if so when? [62]

This then returns to the dilemma posed by the that-time all powerful Catholic Church: They clearly disliked Jews within their midst, yet did nothing to facilitate their stay, short of trying to smoke them out, kill them off and ostracize them. Even the conversos aka Maranos in Spain had problems under Torquemada (who himself, it was rumored, might have been of Jewish descent).

Language / Learn Polish or Russian [86]

Wrong, Marsupial!

As languages go, Russian is even more "practical" than Polish, perhaps as much as German, Chinese or Arabic, and FAR MORE useful than either Spanish or French nowadays:-)

Why such prejudice against Russian?

Language / Learn Polish or Russian [86]

Scholars and international political scientists would heartily beg to differ with the last part of your statement, perterweg:-)

For the above reasons stated, I adamantly disagree as well.

Ah, there's the rub though! If one converted. How about those who wished to maintain their Jewish faith while living and working in peace with their gentile neighbors?? For that, there is no answer, certainly no intelligent rationalization for the cruel and consistent mistreatment of Jews over the centuries.

Travel / World youth day - Częstochowa, Poland [34]

Probably relatively few, Lenko, as there are sadly more "Sunday Hypocrites" out there, than truly SPIRITUAL Christians:-)

At least here in the States, how often have I heard 'I didn't come to Church to be hassled!'

My answer: If not in Church, not at home, surely not in school, at work, where then?

Language / Learn Polish or Russian [86]

Hate to disagree, but owing to her sheer size and geopolitical importance, learning Russian will continue to be of TREMENDOUS importance.

What other language does one use to communicate with which to communicate? Polish???! Hah!, German?? Double hah! English?? Not enough hahs to make a booLOL

Language / Learn Polish or Russian [86]

Yet along with each of the above, including Arabic and Mandarin, you have the whole planet:-)

Russian always was practical, from the Sputnik Era onward!

UK, Ireland / Baby father doesn't know English but wants to go for the British citizenship [76]

I have no doubts whatsoever. A blessed event is indeed just that and no amount of pride can squelch a new dad from providing only the very best for his child, above all, the gift of language:-) As a native English speaker yourself, I'm sure you'll be a fine teacher as well!

G_d speed.

Everything except the English language, Dreamergirl!!

Frankly, the irony's too pitiful for words, though it seems to have blissfully escaped you.

Fine, let what's his name keep living in his own little La-La Land. He'll wake up one of these years, only the wake up call might not come as a soft morning kiss, but rather a nasty note from the PM's office: "AHOY, MATEY!!! LEARN ENGLISH OR GO BACK HOME."

'Fraid not, kid! Sure hope not for the UK taxpayer's sake. If I were a Brit, I'd be hoppin' mad. Not too crazy about the analogous situation here in the US either, tell youse the truthLOL

"Baby's father doesn't know English, but wants to become a British subject."

You know, the more I read this the gosh-darn funnier it getsLOL You really can't make this stuff up:-)

And to think of the immigrants of old who gave their front teeth to do something this bloke's basically being given just because Britain needs a foreign builder to build what a native Brit could build!

What a laughin' shame.

You're rationalizing there just a bit, aren't you? Sooner, hopefully rather than later), your friend's going to have to make the plunge! Now, you tell us he's a builder, so money can't be the issue with his not learning English seriously. Its probably his Polish pride (nierozumiałność),

:-)

You simply say to him "Boże mój, ______, MUSISZ się pilnie uczyć angielskiego, wreszczie po osmiach latach!!! Czy nie, żegnamy się a nigdy się nie widzimy!"

Phonetically "BAWZHUH MOOEE, MOOSHEESH SHYUH PEELNYEH OOCHITCH ONGELSKYEHGAW, VRRESHCHYEH PAWW AWSSMIAKHX LOTOKHX. CHII NYEH, ZHEGNOMUH SHYUH AH NEEGDIH SHYUH NYEE VEEDZYMY.

Translation: "My gosh,______you've got to learn English seriously, finally after eight years!! If not, then it's 'bye 'bye for good!"

For sure, Veles!

And yet, English too can be a monstrously "difficult" language, but you never hear an American or a Brit say, "Oh, you don't have to learn our language! Let's muddle along in my highschool Spanish, French etc...!"

That would be equally ludicrous, wouldn't it?

No matter how "fluent" in English many Europeans claim to be, even the Dutch and the Swedes are starting to get super tired of foreign hordes (even Yanks!!) descending onto their shores year after year and knowing only "Ik heb je lief!" or "Jag alskar dig!", while looking for a quickie in the sack:-)
