News / Poland's political party to ban pornography? [60]

Porn is blocked in many middle eastern countries

Lots of other things are blocked there too.

Do you trust Polonius (for example) after he's block porn to not block sites that sew (to his mind) harmful political ideas? If he were in charge of the internet in Poland I could totally see him blocking PO's site and Gazeta Wyborcza and any other media he felt wasn't praising PiS enthusiastically enough.

News / Poland's political party to ban pornography? [60]

One wonders what their reason is to oppose paid porn on the web?!

I have no objection the paid porn (and sources say: there's lots of it). But the only way to wipe out free porn is North Korea style censorship and it's not worth it.

News / Poland's political party to ban pornography? [60]

Have you seen it that you can authoritatively say it enriches anything?

Have you?

Wasn't Min. Gliński taken to task for criticisng the play without first having seen or read it?

And rightly so. A minister of culture is supposed to have broader horizons than the general public and not be a mirror image of the lowest common denominator.

Just as a production of Death and The Maiden enriches any culture.

I haven't seen the play, just the (not.. tremendously good) movie with Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kinglsey directed by that paragon of virtue Roman Polanski.

Anyhoo, sexual degradation (as a metaphor for the societal degredation of totalitarianism) seemed to be one of the themes of the work - so putting the sex on stage in graphic form doesn't come out of nowhere (so to speak) and is a justifiable artistic decision (whether it's ultimately successful or not is of course another question).

Work / How to find work in Warsaw "if u don't speak Polish" ! [176]

It's when they repeat the same thing over and over

It's a question, and one that you don't seem to have a good answer to. If you answered then it would be over. But you can't and so it's fun to pick at (sort of like a scab).

they pick on perceived personal details not relevant to the topic

Given your ideals of cultural homogeneity then it's relevant. Why should Poland get to be culturally and Australia not? Short answer (in Koło Fortuny style with missing vowels)

Like I said, you are not welcome in Poland or leeching off Polish resources.

So.... why are you in Australia?!?? You still haven't answered that question.

improve your English because pro-slavic the second part of that phrase should start with capital "S".

Nit-picking about spelling - the absolute concession that you have lost the argument.

I would like you to get a job because Polish people should not have to pay your dole. However, you will not be welcome in my country

Too late! I have a job and pay taxes in Poland and most people who actually live in Poland, and not Austrialia (Why are you there again?) say my Polish is just fine.

Polish don't like you already.

I'm sure ones like you don't, but you're not in Poland, you're in Australia (a fact that you are curiously unable to explain).

Best comment on the play situation in Wrocław, seen on the crawl during Szkło kontaktowe (translating from memory): How many of the protesters ever actually go to the theater?

Says it all. But PiS appoints a minister of culture who knows nothing of the field and this is what you get.....

I will not rent those out to foreigners

Then what the holy hell are you doing in Australia?!??! If you're so pro-slavic then come back to Poland and live the dream instead of leeching off of anglophone success. Hypocrite.

Even better news is that when you toss your insults you won't be served in that place anymore

I wonder if you (like Polonius) has ever actually been in Poland. No, they don't refuse to serve you just because you got in an argument once. What mohair could ever buy anything if that was the case?

you will deal with shop keeper's friends (usually male) who will be more than happy to show some kindness of their own towards a tosser from foreign land who harasses Polish shop keepers, especially female ones

Nie tylko cham, ale i chora wyobraźnia.... całe szczęście, że pan nie mieszka w Polsce.... ([you're] not only a jerk, but you have a sick mind, it's a good thing you don't live in Poland).

I will write it as simple as possible: In Poland nobody has to be polite to anybody

Well said! I agree. Polish people tend to love the _idea_ of politeness but often in the heat of the moment prefer displays of aggression. This can be profoundly disorienting to newcomers from wimpy anglophone countries.

The good news is that it's okay to answer in kind, if the salesgirl seems to be making fun of you learn a few insults in Polish (or mini-rants) and practice them until you can toss them off fluently.

News / Turkish invasion on Polish TV - Poland's opinion on Turkey [30]

As for religion, there's very little of it!

I'm on a break from it but I've seen the first 40 or so episodes and one thing that I've noticed is how.... ambiguously Hurrem's conversion to Islam is treated. It comes across as a necessary step in her ascension to power but there's no evidence that she actually believes in it very much (or derives any satisfaction from it as some other characters sometimes do).

The other takeaway is just how toxic forced sexual segregation is (whatever the source, portrayed in the show as cultural intertia as much as anything religious). It completely makes normal interactions between men and women impossible and makes some men (like the Sultan) big winners while reducing many more men to miserable celibacy who lose all reason around women. It also heightens female competition in the harem to insanely evil heights....

Why on earth was this thread merged? It's a completely separate issue! Why make it so difficult for people to actually find threads about things actually going on now rather than ten years ago?

Life / Thinking about moving to Poland in the future... how is life there? [17]

But the quality of education imparted is not as high as it would be in Polish. Scholarship students used to spend 8 months at a school in £ódź and then start regular studies in Polish, if a foreigner wants quality education in Poland then that's the way to go about it.

But if both the student and professors are not tremendously fluent in English then that's just looking for an item on a CV and not education....

News / Turkish invasion on Polish TV - Poland's opinion on Turkey [30]

I think that it's popularity in Poland also stems from the fact that those are historical TV series and since Poland was warring with the Ottoman Empire and there were some Turkish influences in the past and stuff - Poles simply found it interesting.

I think it's popular mainly because it's very well done, it may have been shown for various reasons but it gained a devoted audience because it's an interesting mix of stories that looks nice and very well acted (for TV). The characters are distinct, well drawn and fun to watch (the young Hurrem is especially hilarious).

I don't know if other Turkish soaps will develop an audience in Poland but Turkey has been emerging as a regional capital of popular culture (like South Korea).

not many people speak English, and if they do they don't always come forward with it

Many English speakers think that others have some kind of moral duty to speak English with them if they can.

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

That would depend on their legal system whether it would be an appeal or a judicial review

Well guilty verdicts in trials are automatically appealed and I'm sure a judge reneging on a plea bargain would be grounds for appeal.

Now I have new theory (doesn't displace the old one [the judge was alarmed by the contents of the psychiatric evaluations] but is an alternate and/or the two work together)

new theory: The judge plans on reneging on the plea bargain realizing that that decision will likely be overturned. Ultimately, he thinks, the plea bargain will stand but he's off the hook as he's successfully passed the buch onto some other judge.

Polanski, not understanding how the US legal system works, panics and runs causing himself decades of uncertainty and the need to look over his shoulder for the rest of his life.

Are these plea bargains legally binding?

We don't understand it all either. But I'm assuming that reneging on a plea bargain would lend itself ot immediate appeal and have to be backed up by more than re-election fears.

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

He's never denied that they had sex, only that she didn't object.

Which is irrelevant if she was 13 years old an unable to legally consent to sexual activity (maybe in France....)

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

Roman did 90 days or less didn't he ?

That included psychiatric evaluations. The official story is that the judge was going to reneg on the plea bargain and send him to prison so that's why he fled. My theory is that after looking over the psychiatric evaluations the judge decided he represented an ongoing danger and was going to lock him up for that reason (I'm pretty sure he would have to show compelling reasons to cancel the plea bargain).

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

I would like to see him stand at a trail in Poland.

Assuming you mean "trial" and that's insane. Crimes are tried in the country they were committed in and Poland has no standing in the case. I don't think he should be extradited to the US (per the wishes of the victim herself) but I find it very fitting that he has to look nervously over his shoulder any time he steps outside of France. His art does not make his moral failing okay or make him a victim. He made a bad choice and he should live with the consequences for the rest of his life.

she considered his apology to be sincere and forgave him. I thing there's something about that in the Christian religion

Separation of church and state, legal processes are not influenced by the private religious beliefs of those involved.

Like I say, it's a pity there aren't any Christians around.

Would you trust your teenage daughter to be alone with him?

History / Poland's society at communism and socialism time [55]

At communism time there was NO materialistic attitude in Polish society

The first thing any visitor noted in any communist country was the rampant, morbid materialism. Plenty creates a casual attitude toward consumption while privation (the main economic product of communism) creates a rabid materialism.

I agree that there was more economic integration (with richer and poorer living near each other and seeing each other on a daily basis) and some kinds of equal opportunity (it was easier for smart kids from small villages to get into universities) both of which are being lost which is regrettable but overall Polish people are less materialistic now than in the days of ration cards and dollar stores (where putting food on the table was a constant struggle).

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

Polański being Jewish, it is "normal" that most Poles want to destroy him

I think it's "normal" that people don't much like someone who admitted anally raping a minor. What does religion or ethnicity have to do with it?

I think the best justice is to keep him in France (since they want him) afraid to cross any international borders for the rest of his life. Much more fitting than a show trial would be.

Work / Is moving from Moscow to Wroclaw worth it? (.NET software developer) [39]

There is a feeling that poles do not really like or welcome russians

IME Polish people officially don't like Russians in general but are ready and willing to make exceptions for Russians they know (especially if they can speak Polish and it will be super simple to learn once you're here). Many Poles like the aesthetics of Russian culture, it's the history and (current) politics they don't like.

In a pinch, say you're Ukrainian since most can't tell the difference in accents (is there one?) and relations between Poland and Ukraine are about as good as they've ever been. Okay that's too far, but still there shouldn't be any problem in Warsaw.
