Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

I don't need to hire Polish workers, I do the job myself.

Polak potrafi. :):):)

You, as a teacher, should know that education does not always equate to a good salary - particularly in Poland, but increasingly in the UK as well.

Right.

had he received the same education in Poland he wouldn't be making anywhere near the income he is making now--even after paying off student loans. So even though the Polish Uni's are "free" in the long run it doesn't get you to where you need to be.

If you study in Poland and intend to stay, then, as you say, "free" Polish universities are perfect enough. My case.

A few weeks ago, 700 students were arrested in one night of violence. This does not seem to get reported in the Polish Media.

No, it doesn`t. I never heard about it.

However, there are things that are cheaper in Poland, for example, meats, cheeses/dairy and fruits and veg.

I don`t have time to do research on the Net but I firmly believe that the list of cheaper Polish vs Canadian stuff is much wider than food. :):):): E.g., is Canadian high education free, as in Poland?

Ooops, I am pretty sure you mistake me with somebody else. :):):)

I've tried to explain to you before, but you don't listen.

Now I am sure about it. :):):):)

Sometimes I wonder if you really are a teacher.

Your suspiciousness makes me presume you are quite an embittered unhappy person. Why is it so? :):):):)

I don't know where you get this crazy idea that we have "free" things over here.

My idea????? Never have I said it.

And don't tell me that education and the NHS is free -

I didn`t say it.

Actually, quite the opposite. :):):):)

which is what funds all those "free" things you keep going on about.

Hey, could you go back and read through all the posts in this thread? It seems you got lost. :):):):)

It's only cheaper if you come to Poland as a visitor, earning UK money.

Yes, that`s what I meant by saying

I am sure you don`t pay for a lot of things in Britain but come to Poland to get them 3, 4 times cheaper.

. E.g., you don`t go to a dentist in Britain for exclusive dental work, but come to Poland, instead.

My flat here in Manchester costs around 2300 PLN a month for around 60m2 of space. But I earn about 11000-12000 PLN/month (netto).

Yes, but still you hired cheap Polish seasonal immigrant workers to have it renovated. :):):):):) Working in Britain, spending in Poland. :):):)

My flat here in Manchester costs around 2300 PLN a month for around 60m2 of space. But I earn about 11000-12000 PLN/month (netto).
So I decide to move to Poland. I get exactly the same job I do here, but it pays up to 1600 PLN a month netto, if I'm lucky. Now, please tell me how much space I can rent or buy in one of Poland's largest cities with 1600 PLN a month? Or, more importantly, how much would be left for travel/food, etc. Actually, you don't need to answer, because I know.

Why do you assume you would get 1600 netto in Krakow?

I don`t known anybody in my family, among friends or acquaintances in Krakow who earns 1600 netto. They all earn twice, thrice as much. I am talking about educated people who work for companies or run their own businesses. I know that people are paid such money, e.g., a security man who barely finished secondary school and doesn`t speak any languages.

But you are much better educated, aren`t you? So, why such pessimism?

Average brutto earnings in Krakow 2011 - 3.700 PLN

I earn six times as much as I would in Poland, so those "expensive" British fares would be much more affordable than Polish fares.

Life / Freelance English teacher - Are Polish people unreliable? They continually cancel lessons... [22]

Do they seems unreliable to you?

Some are and some aren`t. I would say that about 10% of my private lessons are cancelled due to various reasons, and unreliability makes about 2%, usually in adult classes.

You seem to have little experience. Try to teach English in other countries, then come back and relate your adventures with reliable clients. :):):):)

I think it is more a matter of prospective students picking up on your negativity and short-term outlook and realizing it won't be money worth spending.

:):):) Excellent remark.

What PC game is it?

No idea, but as there are tanks, probably something from WWII!

Yes!!
Sorry, full name is required.

Because it looks a bit like the Capitol?

Because it is located right in the middle of Warsaw landmarks. :):):)

Kościół Mariacki of course. You can even see the altar in the middle of the picture.

Yes!!!

But why is it there? As far as icons are concerned, the Swiebodzin Christ would be more recognizable.

I know why......

Think! Hard! You can do it!

why hasn't anybody answered it yet - too easy? :)

Answer, then.

I think it's Warsaw castle, Mazury and Morskie Oko.

Yes.

The "Auschwitz" looks like Biskupin.

Because it is Biskupin. :):):)

Also there's some juhas herding sheep, the upside-down house and something like a football match inside the letter g.

Yes.

But what's the building next to the Pałac Kultury?

I guess it is this:

Testing students

Grading system in Poland is from 1(F) to 6(A)

Artistic students draw funny stories on their test sheets.

This year`s winter was quite mild. Long gone are the times when I drove through tunnels of snow walls higher than my car.

I had taken better photos in previous years.

Every 3 or so months there are parent-teacher meetings in Polish schools. First, parents sit at desks and listen to teacher`s general remarks such as the grade`s/year`s results, behaviour, trips, etc. Then, parents form a line and individually talk to the teacher about their kids. Parents of good students boldly go first, while bad students` parents queue as last. It is a rule. I noticed it in my oldest son`s school (4th grade), and also in my workplace.

They have nice decorations on walls. It is my ex primary school -I attended it many years ago.

Ingredients may vary, depending on the taste. The basic stuff is chopped onion and pickled cucumber. I also added shredded leek and red onion, sardines, pickled mushrooms all kinds of spices I found in the kitchen, giving priority to pepper, marjoram, ginger. Don`t forget oilve oil and sth salty, e.g., soya bean sauce.

And white country bread is a must!

Important anniversaries are always celebrated in Poland.

Language / Rhymes for kids and catsoldier [8]

My dislike of poems goes back to school I think

Try some Polish traditional fairy tales, then:

Kawalkada zmysłów. [excerpt]

Orkiestra znów załkała upojnym tangiem. Skłonił się przed nią. Podniosła na niego olbrzymie zielonkawe oczy i wstała bez słowa. Matowa biel nagich ramion odcinała się od lśniącej materii oblepiającej ciasno jej wężowe biodra.

Porwał ją w objęcia. Rytm namiętnego tanga niósł ich opętanych, szalonych. Wpił się w jej usta. Oderwała się z trudem.

- Wódki! - szepnęła, dysząc ciężko.
Spleceni zmysłowym uściskiem pomknęli do baru.

Władysław Bełza

Katechizm polskiego dziecka

— Czym zdobyta?
— Krwią i blizną.

— Czy ją kochasz?

Most modern military equipment lost their Polish signs, with the exception of aircraft

Poland military aircraft

These Polish traditional signs are objected to by military experts as too bright. There has been a discussion going on.... But Poles are devoted to tradition.....

Modern foreign directors of historical films don`t know what Polish flag they should use in scenes with Poles.

E.g., September 11 1683, Polish hussaria charge under this ..... flag:

hahahahaha

Here is the most proper display of the Polish flag - at the Baltic Seaside!

Life / Poland needs more immigrants and their children - which nationalities are the best? [518]

Mr Biegański, a very wide insight into the matter, as usual. Thanks.

What is absent in Poland is a nationwide demand from the Polish business sector to get people (qualified or at least trainable) to fill lots and lots of vacancies. [..] But the market knows best and currently the conditions don't exist in Poland to attract immigrants.

Yes, true. Current Poland isn`t Germany of the 1960s with their urgent need for Gastarbeiters. Still isn`t.

This isn't to say that Poland has a problem because of this.

Good you are optimistic on it.

If you derived so much pleasure from such a simple thread: Poland in photo riddles

what will you say to this?:

I would like to share with you a few interesting photos which I take every month. That is the rule I am going to stick to - month after month. But I reserve the right to provide a personal, extremely subjective commentary to them. :):):):):)

January
January is winter time in Poland.

Polish elderly ladies love wearing natural fur coats in winter as temperatures may drop to -30 degrees C. It happens very rarely now compared to 20th century severe winters, but you should be prepared, anyway.

Morning skies in Krakow

The kindergarten exhibition of Christmas szopkas made by kids and parents.

Fortunately, religion holds strong in educational facilities in Krakow.

Steak tartare is especially popular in Italy, Belgium, Croatia, Serbia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Romania, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Nepal, Switzerland, Korea, Canada, Lebanon and Ethiopia.

More and more Poles take to the dish which is extremely healthy because of high content of vitamins and minerals which aren`t damaged by the cooking process.

Sorry, WB, no quote from you this time. :):):):)

What I mean is, salaries are higher and although we are using a playground as an example, it is not an intrinsic part of life to pay for such a thing, unlike what I have mentioned above.

For some people certain things are intrinsic, for others aren`t. For me it is intrinsic to take kids to fun center at least once a month. :):):):)

So what Poland doesn't produce is expensive.

Yes, let`s have a look.

I was presented Black Johnnie Walker Whisky 0.7 l one day. I checked its price out of pure curiosity:

Poland - online shopping - from 109 PLN = £21.50
cotanio.pl/katalog/1596-Alkohole_i_Tyton/2122-Whisky/475267-Whisky_Johnnie_Walker_Black_Label

UK - from £24.10

mysupermarket.co.uk/#/tesco-price-comparison/spirits/johnnie_walker_black_label_scotch_whisky_700ml.html

The Polish price is unfavourable, indeed. Luckily, I don`t like whisky. :):):):)

But, imagine I go to England and desire to drink Polish vodka.

Bison vodka, 0.7 l

Poland - online - 36.50 PLN = £ 7.20
wroclaw1.pdd.com.pl/p/pl/881/zubrowka+0-7+l.html

UK - online - £21

drinksdirect.co.uk/acatalog/Zubrowka_Bison_Grass_Vodka.html

PS.
Description:
Since the 14th century, Bison- grass has been used to infuse a unique vodka, Zubrowka, a singular spirit of supreme smoothness . Each bottle contains a blade of this grass, bringing a pale olive colour and freshness to the vodka.

Background: In a remote corner of Poland in the North Podlasie Lowland lies a mysterious place called Bialowieza, the last primeval forest in Europe, home to Europe's last remaining herd of bison and to a distinctively, aromatic plant - Bison-grass. Named in honour of the bison, this armoatic plant resists cultivation and, to this day, is still harvested by hand.

Council tax

UK - from £845 to £2,536

Poland - 0 PLN.

You mean with a mortgage or rent?

I mean one`s own flat, no credit.

Private or council rent?

Cooperative.

Either way it could vary wildly, depending on the area of course, and the type of flat, eg ex - local authority block in a grim suburb or penthouse in a good or central area. It would also vary on when you bought, and what your mortgage deal was.

Yes, of course. My block is in an attractive area and in very good shape.

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

How about instigating a bottle deposit on all plastic drink bottles, tetra packs, glass bottles of beverages??? Germany seems to make it work. It would keep millions of millions of bottles out of the trash. And create some employment opportunities for the less fortunate.

Yes, very good idea.

In 1970s and 80s there were bottle banks. But bottles were made of glass.
