News / Adam Michnik awarded for integrity, professionalism and high standards. Poland's No. 1 fascist? [321]

Adam Michnik (Aaron Szechter) - Adam Michnik was born in Warsaw, Poland, to a family of Jewish communists.

Aaron Szechter is not his name and never has been his name.

Yep, kind of explains why this person acts like the biggest scumbag.

Because he doesn't agree with you politically, he's a scumbag?

Face it, you're just repeating the same old tired Communist anti-semitism.

News / Poland to sign FATCA, USA will get information about bank accounts [67]

The problem occurs if the Polish government is giving the personal financial information of a Polish citizen it violates constitutional privacy issues.

Could you outline which article of the Polish constitution prohibits the Polish government from sharing financial information?

I don't know how a treaty can violate individual privacy rights, but it did.

Which Polish constitutional right does it break?

Anyway, what's the problem? If you don't like what the Americans are doing, renounce American citizenship and the problem is solved.

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

The actual report, I assume?

You know, the strangest thing about PiS and their supporters is the way that everything that doesn't conform to their viewpoint is immediately a lie. That seems to be why they're spending so much time alleging KOD are "foreign funded and controlled" instead of looking at the reality.

All there in black and white.

It's quite amazing the way that PiS supporters will lie through their teeth.

Incidentally, something very nice is being planned for Poznań :)

Negative, they want to suck every journalist who is loyal to PO which is very wise.

They will fire every single journalist that doesn't behave in the way expected - complete, blind obedience to PiS and blind hatred of the opposition.

Given that PiS plan to fire every journalist that isn't 100% loyal to them, it seems that "balanced reporting" is very much not on the agenda.

Don't worry, Putin also claims that Russia has a healthy media scene.

Either what PiS is doing stands on its merits or it doesn't.

Given that all of the heads of the public TV channels resigned today and yesterday, it doesn't bode well at all. Jedynka (Polskie Radio) is also alternating between the Polish and European anthems on the hour, every hour.

What will be interesting is to see just how dreadful TVP and Polskie Radio become with puppet journalists that aren't allowed to ask any difficult questions and exist solely as the mouthpiece of the government. Kaczyński clearly intends the public media to mirror Russian media. Fortunately, censoring the internet is beyond them ;)

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

Szary Kowalski (Polish equivalent of John Q Public) imagines that any profitable businesses is raking in vast amounts of money whereas in reality most income goes directly back into the business.

Yes, couldn't agree more. It's probably a hangover from Communism when small businesses (if allowed to operate at all!) were attacked and the owners derided as being greedy capitalists.

I'm strictly a layman in thsi area, but if they converted € and put even more złotys on the market wouldn't that cheapen the Polish currency even more?

No, because they're effectively taking złoty off the open market. The less złoty in circulation, the higher the price for one. There are issues with this though - which is why it's not used to massively manipulate the exchange rate. The Swiss lost a huge amount of money trying to stop the CHF from going below the 1.20CHF/1EUR barrier, for instance.

Where it gets interesting is when you look at the real value of the złoty - it probably should be somewhere around 3:1, but no government in Poland would support it there as it would destroy the Polish export industry.

One interesting aspect is that it seems that PiS intend to do exactly as I predicted before - they won't change very much from what PO were doing economically beyond extra taxation.

News / Poland to sign FATCA, USA will get information about bank accounts [67]

Polonia would come for a holiday and leave money in secret bank accounts and investment property. Any idea how the new government feels about this?

Not possible. For a start, Poland would be silly to risk their entire financial system on the Polonia.

But why would Poland want to help criminal tax dodgers

Quite.

Don't quote me on this, but it was normal for the PO government to sell euro (from the European funds) and convert them to złoty at the end of the year - so PiS are probably doing the same thing. But if not, this article also sheds some light on it.

News / Pope Francis' anti-Polish encyclical? Criticism of coal burning in Poland. [67]

Polsyr, where are you?

politico.eu/article/poland-duda-szydlo-coal-emissions-pollution-cop21

Poland's coal mines tend to be deep, old and expensive - a dire combination when global coal prices are plummeting. It costs about $75 to mine a ton of Polish coal, while the thermal coal price in Antwerp is hovering at around $50 a ton. A report by the Warsaw Institute of Economic Studies found the average Polish miner digs up 700 tons of coal a year; his U.S. counterpart produces 4,000.

The whole article is worth a read, and shows how the coal mining industry in Poland can only survive with massive state subsidies.

Real Estate / Refusal for a mortgage in Poland [18]

Not all things are clear cut in Economics

PiS being utterly incompetent and not understand a thing about economics is clear cut, though ;)

Real Estate / Refusal for a mortgage in Poland [18]

Lowering interest rates is a trap and will cause inflation.

We know. The government intends to do exactly that, as they're relying on inflation to keep the budget within a deficit of 3%.

Free money for banks, only benefits bankers.

Again, we know.

Thank you for explaining exactly why the current government hasn't got a clue.

Interest rate must go up. Anything else says you are in a depression like the rest of us.

Clearly you're not very educated in Polish current affairs, as the government has signaled their intention to cut interest rates.

Devalue of the Zloty is a great strategy when the with the rest of the EU swimming in debt.

A great strategy for who? The złoty is already very weak, and devaluing it further will do nothing but hurt the Polish consumer.

so its a good time to get a loan or mortgage

Margins are going up though, so I expect the interest rate cut to do nothing other than weaken the złoty further against the EUR, CZK and HUF.

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

You are right, Dolno, and I know you weren't specifically addressing me, but if the scenario you suggest happened, I wonder how many of those Poles living abroad would really come back.

I can only use the recent Yugoslav wars as a comparison. There was a pretty big diaspora of Yugoslavs abroad, yet most of them stayed very much put. The most comparable to Poland would be Croatia - yet numbers from the Croatian diaspora were so small that it's not really referenced. Money flowed to the HDZ (which was what won them the 1990 elections) from the diaspora, yes - but actual fighting men and women were very few on the ground. The same was observed among Bosniaks and Serbians. Nothing about Polish history suggests that it would be any different.

If you are not a citizen of Poland you should not be demonstrating against our government or voting in Poland

Why? EU citizens can vote in local and European elections, and they have the right of residence. It's entirely normal and healthy for residents to be involved with current affairs here. Furthermore, everyone on here is a permanent resident at least.

Demonstrating against our government (in Poland) while being a foreigner makes you a insurgent.

Blimey. I wouldn't dare to refer to myself as one while there are many, many brave men and women alive that fought for today's free Poland.

Another characteristic is Polish citizenship and the right to actually vote in the national elections here.

Not really relevant, to be honest. There's no rule against Polish residents taking part in demonstrations, given that the "nationalists" on 11th November and PiS invite foreigners to their demonstrations too.

sekcja Sounds a bit paramilitary to me, when it is used in the context of demonstrations against a government.

Why? We have them at work to discuss rather mundane issues such as "who is organising the Christmas ball" and "who will buy the biscuits". Quite normal in Poland for any organised group to have them.

Notice how Greggy completely diverts the topic from the fact that a villa in Żoliborz costs a considerable amount of cash.

This all sounds a bit like Insurgent Marxist leader speak, but are you "Che Guevara" or more like "Citizen Smith" (British comedy) leading the tooting popular front.

It's just a translation from Polish - they refer to a sub-committee as "sekcja".

Anyway, I'm neither, just a common ordinary person.

That is as much relevant for political landscape of Poland as you would be taking part in gay porn, foreigner.

As we can see, such eloquent posts are a characteristic of PiS supporters.

Plenty of that in various "NGOs".

How about some evidence that KOD is financed from abroad?

You don't like results of free and democratic elections in Poland ?

It's our democratic right to take part in the opposition. I notice that you PiS supporters seem to be terrified of any opposition whatsoever. Wonder why?

What else can one expect from the PISed-up supporters of the 18% regime and the unelected dictator?

It's entirely the same crude, abusive language used by supporters of the PZPR back in the day.

Are you denying results of latest elections, foreigner ?

No-one is denying results, Polonia. But the law is the law, regardless of what PiS think about it.

History / Rajmund Kaczyński not in PZPR [43]

There are no facts, just nasty manipulations. Just like about Kaczyński's "luxury villa". Here it is:

You've just conveniently forgotten to mention that it's in Żoliborz. Perhaps Harry or another resident of Warsaw can tell us about the kind of money that lives in Żoliborz.
