News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

Tusk violated the constitution which says RP looks after and promotes the interests of the Polish nation by being in the pocket of foreign corporations using the euphemsim of being "market-friendly",

Whereas you prefer the market unfriendly days of the PZPR. If you actually lived in Poland you'd see that living standards have improved for the majority over the last fifteen years. Some have been left behind but turning away from capitalism in favor of nationalistic cronyism will not help them (though they may take some comfort in those who have become successful suffering some).

President Duda regards the TK matter as closed.

People breaking the law often say things like that. And their enablers agree with them (doing more harm in the long run than good).

Was it not a violation of democracy for PO to have their own appointees hold 14 of the 15 TK posts and then try to perpetuate that monopoly by illicitly appointing additonal ones?

Having many appointees was a function of being in power for 8 years and the TK addressed the improper appointments (and Duda continues to break the law by not doing his presidential duty). Rather than try to earn that type of influence, JK is trying to steal it. Typical of a rabble rouser who inspires the infantile who don't want to work.

It's time to move on to newer and grearer things under the banners of a dynamic, truly pro-Polish party.

If they're so pro Pollish, then why do they continue to break Polish law? Wouldn't following laws they don't favor be setting a better example?

Why are you so determined to support a party that is breaking the law? And why don't you have an answer for that?

Eight years of pulling the wool over the public's eyes and serving only the bankster-corporate lobby at the expense of the nation was also a crime.

PO (which I'm not especially a supporter of) has been voted out of power. You're emoting about how evil they are is neither very eloquent or relevant.

PiS is breaking the law and I want them stop. Don't you care about a governing party breaking the law?

I'm simply an observer sharing my observations on PF, not trying to convince the masses

Pretty good thing since your position is apparently that political parties that you like should be free to break the law.

Somehow nobody seems to notice that each such demo is costing Polish taxpayers tens of thousansds of złotys

Perhaps it would just be better to ban demonstrations against the government?

Law / Biggest supermarket chains in Poland vs Germany [23]

dinners in expensive restaurants where they discuss top-secret issues (as PO did, I don't believe PiS is different).

The biggest difference is that PO tried to maintain a semblance of rule of law (though often it fell short of its goals) while PiS under the leadership of JK makes no pretense of doing anything but tossing off tired platitudes that resonate with the most poorly educated voters and gathering as much power to distribute to its allies as possible. Its supporters are mostly gullible or on the take watering at the mouth at the spoils, muttering "TKM!" (the dominant theme in Polish electoral politics).

The Tribunal accepted everything the previous ruling party wanted

Not at all. This is blatently false. Note that they rejected the nomination of 2 of the last PO appointees.

didn't protect the people at all

This is not the task of the TK.

I find it interesting that PiS supporters can't really justify what the government is doing on procedural grounds and so they're limiting themselves to saying that PO was worse etc.

What do people think about what Prof Jadwiga Staniszkis wrote? Until a few days ago she was a fierce critic of PO (probably still is) and staunch supporter of PiS but she's publicly criticised the actions of the PiS government and apparently now is public enemy number one.

Among other things she said that President Duda is compromising himself as a president and a lawyer. Apparently her loyalty to the rule of law is stronger than her loyalty to PiS.

Sure less than Merkel was formed by the DDR.

No less, no more. they seem kind of similar, they think they have good intentions but have brought (and will probably bring) catastrophic results.

Soviet-backed regime than the 30 PO MPs

Do you have any idea how immature and tedious that type of argument sounds? All you can do is "welll PO was worse!" that's not an argument fit for adults. Either what PiS is doing stands on its merits or it doesn't. I think what they're doing is very harmful.

It's probably a hangover from Communism when small businesses (if allowed to operate at all!) were attacked and the owners derided as being greedy capitalists.

JK was completely formed by the PRL, part of what's sad about the current situation is that he can't let people who are less created by the communist system take over (because part of the PRL is hanging onto power until it's wrested from your clutching fingers).

Shouldn't the law contain provisions that the taxed enterprises must accordingly reduce their profit margin and not pass the tax onto clients or risk puninitive measures if they do?

In other words, shouldn't the law contain provisions that will ensure capital flight?

And... most businesses run on pretty small profit margins, which most people don't understand. Szary Kowalski (Polish equivalent of John Q Public) imagines that any profitable businesses is raking in vast amounts of money whereas in reality most income goes directly back into the business. I remember working for a convenience store (many years ago) and the manager finishing the books for one month showed me the store's profit (after all expenses) it was about $50 (and this was the most successful of four stores in the chain in the area). Taxing those profits a small amount could turn an ongoing profitable store into a money loser very quickly....

Taxing companies is always a vote getter, but the results are never what the people voting for them expect (and yet.... they never learn).

Law / Poland's National Visa (student) - how easy is it to get rejected? [12]

no acceptions

exceptions

independant studies

independent

In my case, the classes were on my schedule and I paid for them (at the usual rates) so they'd be getting more money from you doing that than you doing the classes in Poland.

Are they by any chance pressuring you into taking classes that they do offer?

However, I chose a minor in a language that my school only offers 4 semesters in. I need 6 more to graduate.

It seems very weird that they'd let you do that. You'd think they'd offer an independent study for the semesters they don't offer (if a willing instructor can be found). That's what I did when I needed something more advanced than first year Polish. But in my case the instructors were happy to play along as they got tired of just first year students.

I can fully understand that you might not want to do that and would _rather_ come to Poland for the classes, but it's odd that that's your only choice.

News / Is Jarosław Kaczyński the new Lech Wałęsa? [74]

it was a crying shame for the Tusk gang to agree to have the presidential plane land at the disused, decommissioned, ramshackle Smolensk airport devoid of functioning runway lights.

Tusk had nothing to do with that particular meeting/ Was it Tusk's fault that so many high ranking military personnel were on the same flight? That is just gross mismanagement or incompetence. Why did they agree to it?

The real crime is endangering so much of the government over sittle little status games and the morally guilty party is probably JK. He's suffered from his hubris but didn't learn the lesson and is desperate to keep people from saying the unpalpable truth.

Language / Nominative (Mianownik) vs Accusative (Biernik)? [17]

if I were to say something like...'myślę że...' would it be nominative or accusative that follows?

Neither, że is followed by a sentence and not a noun (occasionally the sentence is reduced to a word but the case comes from the sentence that's being reduced, not from że)

Remember the basic rules is that verbs and prepositions assign cases (that is thy cause a noun to be in a particular case) że is not a verb or preposition so it doesn't.

First think the thought Polacy są mili (an odd sentence but... whatever)

Then add "Myślę, że" to the front of it without changing anything in th sentence.

Hasn't any govt thought of legislation restricitng this?

Trying to pass legislation will make a lot of people who aren't aware of this.... aware. No party wants to do that.

All that's needed is the political will

And popular support, that's where the problems will come. People like their cheap trinkets too much.

If the UK can function quite nicely without a formal written constitution so too can Poland without a special separate tribunal to evalaute constitutionality.

The legal systems of the two countries make direct comparisons fatuous.

And think of the reduction of bureaucracy that would allow! Sadly, none of the major parties are truly interested in slashing red tape and cutting down on organisational units

It's not in the interest of any political party in any country to actually cut down on bureaucracy because that would increase the unemployment rate. The combination of outsourcing to cheapter countries and massive increases in automation are having (and will continue to have) horrific effects on employment. Maintaining employment by the state is a conscioius tactic pursued by all political actors to help hide the true scope of unemployment (as is the need for more and more people to go to university).

A major problem that no one wants to think about is how to maintain some semblance of normalcy in a future in which a lot of people serve no productive purpose (as in there's no work they can do that machines and/or outsourced third-worlders can't do better and/or cheaper). Look up "Potomkin company" for one possible outcome.

And remember that major financial actors could not be doing this without the active and enthusiastic participation of the citizens in the countries who are and will be hit hardest by this. Liquid capital and technology devastating employment is not some conspiracy by a few elites, it's the result of billions and billions of market choices made by everyday people.

Since when does the Polish Supreme Court review legislation?

what you're saying is that you're happy with the prospect of a particular political party having unchecked power.

Just realize this is what you wanted and don't complain about the all too predictable results.

The most radical anticommunists are those you now rant and rave against.

Who's raving? The pro-PiS activists seem to be following a "you're completely with us or completely against us" tack. Sorry, I'm not playing.

And I think they're mostly radical anti-communists after the fact, converted sinners as it were (who always bray the loudest about how pious they are).

I'm afraid that the crisis that Poland has avoided since 2008 will come crashing to the fore. It won't affect me too too much (knock on wood) but I'd rather it didn't happen.
