Life / Do Polish People steal a lot? [330]

The first impression from the Poles arriving to America is that there is so much honesty in the US. Americans might not think that people in the US are honest, but they are, compared to Poland.

This from reliable sources.

Life / Child Adoption in Poland? [138]

Does anyone know if you need to stay in Poland for a certain period of time, before adoption?

Depending on the adoption agency. Sometimes you might have to stay 3 weeks so you can bond with the child and get the passports and documents ready.

Travel / Which city is better to visit: Warsaw or Krakow? [169]

Everyone says Kraków, so I will too....but...I've lived in both cities and they both have a lot to offer. Warszawa is more modern with all the new buildings but Kraków is more historical with the Sukiennice and Wawel and a short trip away are the salt mines in Wieliczka.

USA, Canada / Marriage laws: dual citizenship (Polish and US) preparing to get married to an American. [65]

Are you coming to the US on a fiance, tourist or other visa? Because that's makes a difference.
In order to get married in the US, it all depends what state you are in. Some states require your birth certificate and valid passport with visa. In others you need only your passport with valid visa.

Waiting periods also vary depending on state. Some you have to wait 2 weeks or more, others there is no wait. But you should always have all your documents with you such as birth certificate, passport etc. which you will need for other purposes later such as adjustment of status or work permit.

Food / Cabbage and Noodles of Poland - Golabki? [30]

Halushki probably means "kluski" and Halupki is "gołąbki". Over the years the words changed a little.

Polish Noodles (Kluski z Kapusta)
Boil egg noodles medium thickness
Sauté in 1/4 pound of melted butter:
5 cloves garlic, minced
1 large onion chopped
1 very large head of cabbage (green) shredded medium when the vegetables are limp, add 1 Tablespoon of caraway seed and salt and pepper to taste. Drain noodles. Pour vegetables over noodles. Stir in 1 pint or more of sour cream.

USA, Canada / CULTURE SHOCK! (of my Polish finance who visited the US) [210]

Should have told me sooner about that hamster. I could have gotten you one. What else did I have to loose. Tranported two dogs from Poland, what's one more lousy little hamster? Dogs are in culture shock as well, but handling it very good.

I love the family values in Poland

YES!!! Me too. The family is close and important. When I was kidnapping my fiance from Poland, his sisters were crying, his mother, his nieces. I felt terrible. Like a criminal or somrething.

USA, Canada / CULTURE SHOCK! (of my Polish finance who visited the US) [210]

OK. My Polish fiance just came to the US. First time ever. Talking about Culture Shock!!!! He can't get over these 4-way stop signs!! Mailboxes on the side of the roads and nobody steals the mail!!! I live in the rural area and never lock the house. I don't even know where the key is, he doesn't get it!!! Nobody fences in yards!!! My horses sleep outside at night!!!! Cars have air-conditioning!!! Hot water is on the left!!!Everybody stops at a stop sign even when there is nothing coming!!!And the list goes on and on.

I'm taking him to church today. He'll freak out when he sees carpets and bathrooms in a church!!!!

Life / How do Polish people see homosexuality? [152]

When the Boston Gay Choir from the US was performing in Poland in 2005, some demonstrators were against their performance and others were for it. But the choir director said that there is more fighting against the choir going on in the US than in Poland.

Morality issues.

Language / English borrowings in Polish [38]

I wouldn't call it corruption, I would say it's foreign companies investing in Poland and advertising in English.
Poland is very proud of their culture in the US. There are many older Polish people who came here at the turn of the century, many cities are named after Poland, there's a Krakow, Warszawa, Poland, Pulaski etc. just to name a few.

The US has sister cities in Poland and each year many towns celebrate Polish Fests, Polish masses, etc. In my town alone there is a Koziczkowski Park and a Pulaski Park. We have Polish dance groups and singers, and a Polish Newspaper company.

Many Poles felt homesick when leaving their country but their traditions and culture is going strong in the US.

Life / Child Adoption in Poland? [138]

i am 48, my husband 68 and has non-hodgkins lymphoma

1. No, you are not too old, you just might not be able to adopt an infant, but a little older child. I know a couple in California who are about 47 years old and they adopted two children last year.

2. No, your husband's health is not a problem. You have to meet a certain income criteria and be able to take care of a child, and that is the main concern.

Food / Borscht - Zurek / Bialy barszcz recipe [153]

It's still done this way in Poland. It has this fermented taste when it sits for days. Like when they make beer, it sits till it gets fermented.

And bread makes good fermented soup.
I was never a big fan of it....:)

Food / Borscht - Zurek / Bialy barszcz recipe [153]

Yes, this is similair to "żurek" and it's called: "Biały Barszcz" which means white.

Zur Soup
The soured juice (white borsch) for the zur should be prepared earlier. It is made the following way:
Scald 2 cups of whole-wheat flour with boiling water, pouring it enough to get a thin dough. When it cools, add 1 ¾ pints lukewarm water and place a piece of whole wheat bread crust in it. Pour into a glass jar, tie with gauze and leave in warm place for three days.

Cook 1 ¾ pints of vegetable stock with dried mushrooms and add ¾ pint white borsch to the hot stock. Do not strain, as the soup should be slightly thick. If the zur is not sour enough, add some more white borsch. Add a crushed garlic clove along with 4 potatoes cut into cubes. When the potatoes are ready, salt to taste.

Love / DO POLISH MEN DATE OLDER WOMEN? [169]

My "x" husband cheated on me but I didn't know it. He was doing all kind of dirty things behind my back (like steralizing himself to punish me so I don't have any more children) and when I found out he was cheating, I said to myself: "good riddance" He found a woman way below my intelectual standards.

So what I'm trying to say, if a guy cheats on you, let the jerk go. He's not worth you!!!! There is somebody out there who is perfect for you in age, intelligence and looks. It might be hard for you to let him go, but remember, once a cheater, always a cheater. You forgive him, you guys get together and sooner or later he'll do that again.

It's better to end the relationship now. I wouldn't take a guy back who cheated on me. Let him beg to come back all he wants.

You are better than him and believe in yourself!! You are your own best friend!!! There is someone out there looking for you.....

Language / What should I end my last name with? [16]

They don't have a clue in the US on whether it's female ending or male.
I know males ending with czna. It sounds funny to me, because I know it's for female, but they don't know that. They just walk around with czna and have no idea whatsoever.

So If you want czna, do it.
