Life / New in Poland! Not yet jaded and loving it [34]

Time to fire up the grill and crack a Zywiec!!!!!

Now you're talkin! LOL

Probably quicker to take it back and deliver it yourself anyway.

Now what's the fun in that?

Life / The sale of alcohol at Poland's fuel filling stations [18]

The second I go abroad, I have to repeat in my head "you're not in Poland, you're not in Poland, they have police here, you're not in Poland".

lol
can you buy booze in other countries while filling up?
which country(ies), in your experience, are the toughest on the highways in terms of enforcement?

Drinking and driving laws are enforced so there's the trade off.

How are they enforced? (not meaning to be sarcastic). Here in Central Jersey it's a joke.

I completely agree;I just figured that was their reasoning

it was :)

I guess they figure it promotes drinking and driving.

that what the anti-alcohol faction maintains. But as PlasticPole says, there's an easy way around it. ie if you want to drink and drive, you'll drink and drive regardless if it's sold at the gas station or not.

Life / The sale of alcohol at Poland's fuel filling stations [18]

I read today that lawmakers are considering a ban on the sale of alcohol at petrol stations.
During my last visit to Poland my cousin bought us several cold bottles of Zywiec while filling up. Truth be told, I was initially shocked (but shock melted away to a guilty satisfaction after the third bottle).

Do you think the sale should be banned?
Can you buy beer in other countries' gas stations? ..........here in the States you can't (I think it's also a no in Canada).

Language / The Polish word for fart? [28]

Sounds almost like Russian "puKAT", hilarious false cognate with Polish "to knock" (on a door etc.) "pukać"
LOL

Mom's side came from Galicia. Maybe that's why? Puku and bąki are the only words I know :)

History / Life in Poland before the fall of communism [30]

1. What was the general perception of your immediate family after Poland won independance? 2. Can you say whether they fared better or worse (life quality wise) 10 years after the fall of communism?

I'm sorry old boy I can't comment

Ahh Rybnik yes you grew in up in the pre 1991 era didnt you?

no WB I was merely passing through. I came to Poland for the first time in '78 and left in '85. I've only recently returned to re-connect

The choice vas limited, but we were not starving.

yes
I was always amazed how folks put food on the table. Most times it appeared there was absolutely nothing to be purchased.

Maybe we can get some folks to contribute their reflections on the underground economy that flourished during the post-Gierek period.

Love / Indian national is seeking help to get my Polish wife back! [30]

My concern is my family (my wife & kid) & i will not give up that easily. But at this time just feeling helpess :( & broken

My heart goes out to you, seeing as I found myself in similar circumstances. Part of me wants to smack some sense into you but I can sense you're not nearly ready for that. You've been advised to seek legal counsel. You should do just that. There's your son (your wife's another matter altogether).

UK, Ireland / Crying Polish truck driver on British roads is Internet hit [269]

POlish people in UK laughing and joking about the appearance of everyone around them, in the arrogant belief that nobody could possibly understand them,.

I come accross it myself many times a week
