UK, Ireland / WHAT IS SO SPECIAL LIVING IN U.K [90]

no demeaning questions at the airport

Of course not, that only happens to people with British passports, especially at London airports ;)

The last time I flew via Heathrow to Manchester, I had to pass through FOUR security checkpoints to connect to my internal flight at T5, and was treated like a criminal at baggage screening. Yet the non-EU (mostly African, of course) passport holders are waved through quickly like VIPs at a popular nightclub!

Only in the UK!!

I totally avoid LHR now. F*** 'em!

I agree that Muslims seem to reproduce like rabbits (which seems a trait popular with many immigrants) so they may just about be the majority of the population in a few northern sh!t holes

Southern sh*tholes like London and Luton aren't exactly faring much better ;)

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

Totally un-PC, but who cares about PC anyway - it had to be said! :)

I love the way the bariatric brigade always blame it on being "big-boned" or whatever. How many 25 stone Africans or Chinese do you see - apart from a few rich ones? If you're lazy, won't exercise or work hard, and eat too much Americanised/Westernised junk food, you will get fat - simples.

News / New budget airport for Warsaw to open in 2012 [16]

I'm sick of budget airlines. It took us longer to travel from central London to Stanstead Airport than fly to Poland.

Serves you right for using the Easybus, then!

The last time I used Stanstead, it took about 40 minutes to get into London on the train. Whereas it takes over 2.5 hours to fly to Poland.

Don't blame the airlines because you're a tight-fisted whingeing Aussie!

Just some gee whiz info: In 1938, the Lux Torpeda train took 3 hours from Warsaw to Gdańsk...now only 6 and the Warsaw train station was one of the most modern in Europe. Now, well, you've seen it. :)

Yet people on here think that Poland is fit to rub shoulders with the world's superpowers. pmsl. :D

USA, Canada / Do Polish guys like American girls? [103]

Polish women talk with a sexy European accent, but British???

British women have a European accent, by the way. The fact that Britain is actually
in Europe may be a clue ;)

I think that English spoken by Polish people sounds really monotonous and completely unsexy. Hence my comment in my first post. Which just goes to show how subjective this all is :)

USA, Canada / Do Polish guys like American girls? [103]

So its hard to say if you dont like an American accent... maybe you haven't heard the right one haha.

The ironic thing is, many people (over here, at least) think that the "Southern" accent
isn't very attractive, but it's probably the only American accent I actually do like :)

California (Me!)

Oh dear :(

It even goes beyond regional accents. Many individual cities even have their own recognizable accents here in the US.
When you think about it, it makes sense: the US is big, our states are the size of many European countries.

True. I've often wondered if it's as pronounced as over here, though? Accents can change within five miles around here :0

USA, Canada / Do Polish guys like American girls? [103]

As Seanus would say (welcome back, btw... **** the mods... lol) "some do, some don't" :)

I don't, mainly because I don't like American accents. I couldn't go out with an Aussie or a Scouser for the same reason :) I don't like Polish accents either, but I can easily overcome that disadvantage by making them speak only in Polish; in which case, it's OK. lol :)

Though I must mention that I did once date an American woman for a while; she was from the Deep South. I remember her once saying that London was far more dangerous than the USA - because back home "if someone pulls up at the lights and tries to jack my car, I pull out my gun and blow that n1gger's head off. I can't do that over here, and that's not right".

As I said, she was from the Deep South... :D

History / Unusual soldier (The bear - named Voytek) [71]

Many monuments, a memorial museum and a major film by Andrzej Wajda.

I'm talking about a BRITISH momument, i.e., one which was denied by the UK Government because they didn't want to "offend" the Commies. Political Correctness gone mad, 50 years ahead of its time!

Where the bear lived.

In a bankrupt country which can ill afford to waste £200K on a bear's monument!

The officers who were murdered at Katyń probably reacted to Russian language before they were shot, but they don't get a monument and a bear does?? Only in the UK!

UK, Ireland / Why Manchester rules over Warsaw :) [65]

If I'd travelled 6000 miles to visit the UK, and someone took me to the Trafford Centre, I'd be pi**ed-off as well! :D

shouldn't we be comparing those two and comparing Poland's capital with London

That would make things even worse :D

£ódź is just the "Polish Manchester" because of the former textile industry, nothing else!

Comparing Warsaw to London is like comparing Toruń to Kraków - both nice in their own way, but that's it!

The list from Warsaw can't even hope to come close to the quality that is on that list there. I can't even name any bands from Warsaw.

I've got music by at least 25 of those bands, and that's not even close to being a complete list (for me, or otherwise) :)

Funniest thing of all, Warsaw were from Manchester - and look what became of them ;)

:D

because you are visibly not yourself, as your illness badly influences your emotions.

I couldn't be more myself if it tried! :)

But wait another 20 years and Warsaw will surpass Manchester beyond comparison.

Time will tell ;)

I wonder if your second Metro line will have been completed by then. The Chinese will probably have built a dozen entire systems by 2030 :D

After all, it is a capital, while Manchester is only one of major British cities.

True, but what a city/region!

If Warsaw was destroyed and Greater Manchester was moved to replace it, it would be a great improvement for Poland.

But if the same happened to Manchester and Warsaw was moved here, it would be a disaster. We've already got one "boring Birmingham", thanks! :D

Manchester has a fantastic Chinese quarter with some of the best food imaginable.

Has the best Cantonese restaurant in the UK, apparently.

Which is a MUCH greater accolade than "best Chinese restaurant in Poland" :)

and I don't live there so there's another advantage ;)

Best reason of all! :p

You can console yourself with living in "the Polish Manchester", lol ;)

UK, Ireland / Why Manchester rules over Warsaw :) [65]

I really wonder how London and Manchester would look like after being bombed to the ground and after that being under communist occupation for over 60 years ;)

In case you hadn't noticed, this country also got bombed, and the lefties have done almost as much damage since ;)

Though Warsaw is a really crap city, you would have to compare it to Bristol.

More like Birmingham imo, both full of ugly concrete ;)

The women are about 347 times more attractive than Mancunian women with their spare tyre stomachs.

You've never been here, have you? There are so many hot women here, not all of them are fat either.

Women in Wroclaw are far better looking than in Warsaw, but still too thin for me, I'll stick to British women, thanks. I can handle a larger woman, you clearly can't :p

You gave the world the Stone Roses, we gave the world Chopin.

And hundreds of other great bands and musicians, whereas you gave us what else exactly? Piotr Rubik? lol

We're the heart of regional business and politics in the new EU 10. You're the heart of business and politics about as far as Salford.

We're not a capital city, whereas Warsaw is, yet we compare very well. The difference is, you'd be nothing without UK/EU funding!

You don't meet many multilingual racists

lol, so naive!

You forgot about the hundreds of thousands of bilingual Polish racists we've got over here :)

Unlike Mancunians, people in Warsaw speak understandable English.

It's understandable to most British people, unlike "aj vant cup af ti pliz" lol :D

Can't be bothered with this fool, I'm going back to bed lol

UK, Ireland / Why Manchester rules over Warsaw :) [65]

Wow. Life there must be exciting, if one of the best things about the city is that its IKEA has good views.

Clearly the meaning of the phrase "tongue-in-cheek" is lost on you. :p

Kraków? Wrocław?

Nice places to visit, but I'd still rather live round here ;)

UK, Ireland / Why Manchester rules over Warsaw :) [65]

A tongue-in-cheek, yet brutally honest and clearly truthful Saturday night thread. :)
Because I'm ill, and I'm bored (but obviously not the chairman of the bored like Iggy pop lol).

1. Our airport is bigger and better. More than twice the number of passengers, and 80% more aircraft movements. You may get a second airport for the chavvy airlines eventually, but we have Liverpool to look after those (and the direct flights to Poland, hehe). We can get a train home from ours (and soon a tram), whereas you have to catch a bus full of muggers and pickpockets :p

2. We've got Heaton Park, which isn't exactly an exciting name, but at least we don't name one of our most important parks after bathrooms :D

3. Our trams don't stink of beer at 7am like yours do.

4. Our buses aren't 100 years old.

5. I only have to work for 10 minutes to buy a large cappuccino, not two hours. And it's not made of Gold Blend either :p

6. You were voted the most boring European capital, whereas no-one in their right mind would call Manchester boring, even if they don't really like it.

7. We have world-famous football teams, even though everyone hates the Glasers.

8. Our IKEA has the best views in the UK, and better views than yours, of course :)

9. We don't spoil the city centre with concrete council estates (we've got Salford for that, anyway ;) )

10. Beetham Tower 2, Warsaw Trade Tower 0 (even after extra time).

11. Manchester's one of the most important music cities in the world, and this is undisputed. Whereas Warsaw is groundbreaking because... Hmm. Answers on a postage stamp - that will be enough space anyway :D

12. You haven't got The Home Of The Jumbo Cod. :D

14. We have Coronation Street and Shameless, whereas you've got M jak Miłość and Na Wspólnej - zzzzzz! No contest! :D

15. Amathyst and I live here, so it must rule :)

16. We may have loads of Poles too, but most of ours will go home - whereas most of yours will never leave! ;)

17. However, my favourite uncle lives in Warsaw, so it's not all bad.
And you've got Kryminalni (or did have, but they cancelled it, so scrub that one, haha) ;)

Everonye knows that English comedy is the best there is: Blackadder, little Britain etc. Can you find anything better, I doubt it!

I'll lend you my copy of Bernard Manning live at the Embassy Club lol :D

Language / Does anybody know of a list of Polish-English False Friends and True Friends? [60]

I don't even know such word "innit"...

It's (mostly London) slang, it means many things, depending on how and where you use it in the sentence, for example:

Yeah (omg innit, that girl is so buff!)

I agree (Do you have a sweet tooth? Innit, but I like cakes more than biscuits lol)

It's/that's true (Are you really 32? Haha innit, but I don't look it :) )

(Do you) understand? (Don't look at my girlfriend or I'll mash you up innit)

Aren't you (you're bit of a battyboy innit)

Isn't he/she (see that guy with the pink jacket, he's a battyman innit)

Shouldn't they (maybe someone should sort out that faulty speaker innit)

There are many more, but I have to go.... innit ;)

News / POLAND IS 4TH BEST PLACE TO LIVE IN EUROPE [60]

Its all relative Rychlik and the figures you posted maybe cheap by Western European standards but they are not by Polish standards...

Absolutely. It seems like Poland is doing everything the wrong way round - instead of gradually increasing wages as the economy develops, with prices rising accordingly, it seems like Poland just wants to mimic Western prices but with no change in wages. It's still affordable as a travel destination, but for what it is, it isn't good value at all. And it must clearly be even worse for ordinary (average wage-earning) Poles.

When I went to Hong Kong last year (one of the most expensive places in the world) I never spent more than £2.20 on a meal, and dim sum with tea for breakfast (effectively a couple of pierogi with tea) cost literally pennies - as did travel on the ridiculously efficient and integrated transport system (it goes without saying that it's better than anything Poland is ever likely to have in my lifetime). I think it would be pretty difficult to find an authentic meal in Poland for about 11 PLN these days. The last time I paid something like that in Poland was when I had some pierogi in Wroclaw about 3 years ago. My very comfortable 3.5 star hotel cost about the same as a 2-3 star hotel in Poland - and don't even get me started on the difference in quality of service! Obviously, female Polish hotel receptionists are better looking than male Chinese hotel receptionists, but I don't go on holiday to look at the hotel staff, do I? lol :D

News / €11,700 to every migrant returning to the Polish capital and starting a business there. [110]

Yea, because what Poland really needs right now are a million economists, philologists, psychologists, and sociologists. They can come back and help drive wages for unskilled labor down even further.

What, you mean like they are doing over here? Well, it's about time some of them had a taste of their own medicine.

Roll on "multiculturalism" in Poland as well - it won't seem quite so cool and "egzotyczne" when Polish cities develop no-go areas for Poles :D

lol... of course not... the Polish goverment should better take care of an affordable housing for your people, lower unemployment and better paid jobs... that's some start...

This would make much more sense, but EU-style socialism doesn't work that way - reward the useless, penalise the deserving - that's the UK/EU way.

I can't see how Poland's economy needs hundreds of thousands of baristas or carwash attendants either :)

Food / I have a Polish couple coming over for afew days and would like to cook for them. [93]

Eccles cakes

boddingtons

Now how Manchester is that.

Eccles is in the City of Salford, and Boddingtons isn't made here any more. We still have the chimney, though :D

You should have said Holts, really ;)

That said, my favourite brand of Eccles cakes are made in Manchester, so I'll let you off this time ;) hehe

Food / I have a Polish couple coming over for afew days and would like to cook for them. [93]

Well it is the capital, and all begins here

Not always.

Back in the 80s, we had a club up here which revolutionised the club scene and became one of the most famous clubs in the world. While we were dancing to house music, Londoners were laughing at it and calling it "gay hi-energy", while still clubbing to boring, dated "rare groove" instead. They caught on eventually, though :D

To avoid the predictable red-text edited response, I'll get back on topic ( :p @ mods) to add that Balti cooking is from Birmingham, not London, and that was the first huge change in British Indian cooking since the tandoori oven. The Southerners also caught on eventually. ;)

So maybe the OP should make another type of "English" food for the visitors - a Balti :D
