Life / Golden Wedding in Poland, the protocol for giving gift for a wedding? [58]

grrr.
My mother swears she will only send $20.

Well, it's good as well. Frankly speaking you and your famly are the best ones to decide, we can only advise based on OUR expirience. Don't sweat it too much it's not like you are very close (from what you wrote). We can't know if they are sincere or just playing up to get the money so you'll have to use your judgement.

Don't listen to anyone- think about it and do as you think and feel is right. No matter if it will be $300 or $30 you'll be the one who'll pay it and you have to feel ok with it.

I would rather say 250 per person. Generally the custom is that you give more or less what the couple spend on you. If they get something above that it's a nice bonus. (Close family differes ofc)

If you give them $400 or 1200 PLN it would be very generous.

Language / Perfective vs Imperfective - grammar [150]

Well, the expression" na podróż" (no y here) is a bit akward and not entirely correct so I would rather use delegację. Other possibility is "w podróż służbową"

Language / Perfective vs Imperfective - grammar [150]

Następnego miesciąca JEŻD-Ę na podróże służbowej do Warszawy. vs. Codziennie JADĘ do Warszawy. / DOJADĘ pociągiem do uniwersytetu na zajęcia.

Wrong.
W przyszłym miesiącu jadę do Warszawy na delegację vs Codziennie jeżdŻę do Warszawy./ Dojeżdżam...

News / Krakow, Poland considers co-hosting the Winter Olympic in 2022 with Slovakia (UPDATE) [30]

The sick, the unemployed, the elderly and those in run down social housing (or people desperately trying to get on the waiting list) would very much prefer to watch it on TV from somewhere else.

BS- Me and my mom would love to see the olympics in Poland :)

Being the only country in Europe that didn't bother to show the Paralympics on state TV certainly doesn't help their bid much either.

Hmmm, if you are talking about Sochi that from what I remember I did see it on national TV....

History / How come Poles like Russians but not Germans? [216]

I'm Polish and I have nothing against Russian as such. I can judge their government actions but it doesn't mean I dislike a nation. Simple idea of that is silly.

Real Estate / Preliminary Contract - Purchase of Apartment [26]

Personally I believe a sworn translator would be more useful than a lawyer- especially one that knows all the terms and so on.
Please remember that notary has to make sure interests of BOTH sides are protected. In my case it ment that the notary explained the consequences of every legal point.

Thanks, so these deeds or documents at the local court would prove their ownership and a right to sell with no charge (loan) outstanding, I assume

You assume correctly

Well, if someone want's to be extra, extra safe then sure, one can hire a lawyer ,however, they may even be school friends. It looks like that- you finish law and then you decide which branch of law interests you- lawyer, judge, prosecutor, notary...So your lawyer may have more knowledge than your notary but it's a gamble. And when I was given a flat (never bought any so can't say anything about the money part of your post) the notary had the leatest flat's document. However he is only the guarantee of the common wishes of both parties. And to make a contract that is precisly what buyer and seller want. To be sure you may ask the court for the documents. That will be be enough.

All of you do realise notary is after law school, don't you? He finishes the same Uni as your lawyer...And he puts his license in line when signing the documents.

Life / Getting kaucja back - dealing with landlords [20]

I have no idea what you mean by " "friendly" neighbour".

Quite common situation- like when a "friend" is telling you he/she saw your wife/husband somewhere e.t.c. Basically snitching.

My point is that some landlords have a habit of trying to rip off their foreign tenants, and when somebody is trying to steal from you, they forfeit their rights to be treated like a normal person.

Firstly, I never saw you defending the landlord.
Secondly- we may as well say the same in reverse- that if this person is trying to escape paying bills we shouldn't look at her as a "normal person"

P.S. Please notice that I don't think the tennant is at fault I just try to show different perspective.

Life / Getting kaucja back - dealing with landlords [20]

Well, I'm on Tipsy's side on this one. Most landlords don't register however we can't work on that assumption. Just go with the lady to the offices and ask for receits. Btw- the meters should be on display so you should be able to check for yourself how much you used.

Do you mean "friendly" neighbour, Harry? Even the thought despises me. If you want to act act as yourself, don't use some dirty snitching.

Language / A little Polish grammar. Masculine, animate objects. [64]

Still they don't belong to the general rule. On deeper linguistic level- sure, you can research that but for basic or intermediate level- my explanation is enough I think.

UK, Ireland / Any Polish Females in Birmingham Uk, Need Urgent Help [16]

why does your Polish GF not already have a passport, if she's been living in the UK? Didn't she need one to get to the UK?

No, since Poland joined EU (well, few years later) she doesn't need a passport.

Life / Lack of human rights in Poland? [132]

Yes, 48 hours for everyone. After that they have to go to court or release you.
You can go to court and sue for unreasonable arrest.

Life / Lack of human rights in Poland? [132]

One thing though- police has the right to keep ANYONE for 48 hours. That's what they did. No laws were broken. If you come to Poland you have to expect to be treate according to Polish law.
