History / Lwów, Wilno ... kresy - Poland have lost enormoust part of our heritage... [389]

The worst country roads in Poland don't look like main roads to Kiev.

I know roads suck. The rockets you used from Portuguese done quite a damage ;) Nevertheless, a lot is being done right now to improve them. So, don't worry it will OK by 2012.

to be precise, the first use of rockets as an artillery weapon in Europe is a polish achievement.
The only time rockets were used as weapons in Europe prior to that was by the Mongols

Can you explain that macabre? ;) And also how Portuguese get to Poland with rockets?

So Nathan you deny that Poles built the following in Lwów?

Poles didn't built Lviv. There is nothing to deny. Power grid? ;) What is that? I know that Poles burnt 90% of Ukrainian churches and libraries. Train stations and hospitals were constructed under Hapsburg empire and for its money which Ukrainian and Polish taxpayers provided for the state.

History / Lwów, Wilno ... kresy - Poland have lost enormoust part of our heritage... [389]

Lets trace the history of rocketry, brought to Europe by Portugese, first used in combat by the Polish, perfected by Germans and then by Russians, where's Ukraine there?

So, to be the 1st to use rocketry is an achievement of Poles? ;)))
Let me tell you the story which you try to depict here:
The Chinese invented powder and rockets. The Portuguese which were great explorers and sea travelers brought the rockets to Europe, on the Iberian peninsula. Then Portuguese king says: "I want to try these rockets against Spaniards". But the guys who brought the rockets say: "NOOOOOOO, God forbid. Poles are the first to try these". Then the rockets traveled across Spain, France, the Holy Roman empire. In each state it was prohibited to try the Chinese invention. Everyone waited for Polish expertise. Finally, the rockets arrived to Polish king. And he was happy to be 1st to shoot a rocket. Since then it was the greatest "believable" achievement ever with the only exception of a German astronomer Kopernikus, stolen to have something else to brag about ;)

Lwów built by Poles, Kijów built by Russians

Any link? ;) You have a big mouth, I wonder why ;)

then some of them discovered (somehow) that they are Ukrainians

Somehow? Hmmm... Are there any scientific theories of this discovery of yours? ;)

News / Ruski a slur like Pollack? [53]

in the face

Also, I might add to what you say, it doesn't matter what you feel or how you interpret the words you are using, it is how the person about whom you are talking takes it. I might say: "Hey Polack!" meaning "hey a guy from Poland" and nothing else, no hatred, not for fun. But how the guy I am talking to will take it? So it is not about what the sayer feels - nobody gives a dime what is in the head of the talker. If people to whom you refer consider it offensive, then it is offensive.

Poles still have some memorials of German science and human prosperity on their territory

I bet they have prisons used to exterminate "enemies of the state" in which were murdered millions of people like we do in Ukraine built by rocket-building Soviet Union.

And why USSR was forced to create new industrial core on Ural?

Because it has ore and is far from the front.

Was Stalingrad so close to Ukraine?

It is 380 km from Luhansk.

German "carriers of civilization"

Look at them now. And look at Russian "civilization" - it destroyed millions of lives over the years when Germany and other countries were progressing not on the bones of innocent people, but science and human prosperity.

But can you show the place in US where a single german bomb was dropped during WWII?

I can show you Berlin or Hiroshima in 1945. They were anihilated almost to the ground. What about Russia? Besides a few close to Ukraine and Belorus cities Russia was unharmed. Somehow it didn't help Russia and the whole SU in general to become anything even remotedly close to what people live in Germany and Japan.

everyone knows anything of note was invented by a Scotsman anyway

I agree.

Hm...

I don't even feel like to start.

We are destructive enough to be able to put first satellite and first man in space

We, you mean, 15 republics who were naked, hungry, destroyed and in GULAGS, eating grass and bark and building and working for nothing just to put a fcuking rocket in space? Yes, Americans did it later, because they didn't turn their people in animals. Americans didn't stay in line-ups at 4 am to get a liter of milk or a chunk of bread. They put money into a better dentist machines, field tools, tractors, cars, medicine and the fcuking rocket you are so proud of costed lives of millions. Recall the stores you bought your food in - what was it like - an American barn at best.

Bob Dylan's comment 'Don't criticise what you can't understand'.

I say: "Don't criticize what you CAN understand by don't feel like learning and instead prefer to sh*t at like a dirty sl*t". I hope, Seanus, my saying beats Bob Dylan's when applied to your case.

Me? I just have mental pictures of Ukraine but as I said, I have virtually no contact with anything Ukrainian.

Exactly, if you have no idea than why not use toilet instead of PF. Sokrates releases his diarrhea here like a dirty monkey he is, but you, a double law graduate - not nice...

I'd never heard of them at all. Please don't hold it against me :)

Seanus, I don't care if you know them or not. It is your business. I don't know many of the people mentioned myself, even those the rest of the world seems to know. But for an educated person as you claim to be it is not nice to say the following and then ask if I can provide you with info on whether you can find the people in English. You are just disrespectful, nothing else.

They don't seem to excel in that dept for sure

They are like Polish farmers of long ago in that respect. Vodka shots in the morning and off to tend the fields :)

A law graduate of 2 Scottish universities, yes :)

Law? What in hell where you doing there? Banging dollies? ;) Come on, Sean :)

I was just saying

I know what you said. I don't need 2 universities for that.

Do any of them write in English, Nate? I can't read cyrillic.

Did Lem write in English? There are people who make translations, Seanus. And yes, many of them are in English.

But hey,Nathen, tells us,without google, what you know about Wales?

Wales is a one of the parts of the Great Britain located on the south-west angle of the British island. Borders England on the east and Scotland on the north. The king of Britain has to be a prince of Wales to become a king (if I am not mistaken). Wales has a port Cardiff which is the capital. Anthony Hopkins is from Wales. It is a beautiful, green, grassy country with lots of sheeps. It has coal. It has Ireland across a straight. Welsh is a very unique language. It is washed by La Manche on the south. I knew a famous writer from Wales but I forgot his name. It is mostly plain, hillocky state. I might recall more if I have more time (I am editing and I got only 15 minutes)

Again, if I wanted to put my opinion on Welsh literature or scientists I would first made a research and would never offend Welsh by my ignorance like a 2 Universities graduate does.

History / Lwów, Wilno ... kresy - Poland have lost enormoust part of our heritage... [389]

However, they don't appear to have anyone like Czesław Miłosz, Szymborska or Lem.

Their culture is as it is and we can describe it as different. They don't seem to excel in that dept for sure but maybe their lack of resources has played a part in that.

Maybe they don't place such a high value on such things, Sok

My impression of Ukraine, of course based on virtually no experience, is that they value subsistence in that they provide for their own

You know, Seanus, if Sokrates said this I wouldn't be surprised, but you a graduate of a British university (if I am not mistaken) to make statements like these just brings shame to the name of the school where you wasted your time and money. A simple basis to make judgement only upon careful observing and learning of the subject which is a part of any respected establishment seems to have passed you by unharmed. No wonder you moved to Poland.

Czesław Miłosz, Szymborska or Lem are great writers and poets. Well-known, no doubt about that. I've read in Polish works by Szymborska and Lem. The latter is one of my favorite sci-fi writers. Since I speak and read both Ukrainian and Polish I might make a judgement on these people as compared to you, Seanus and Sokrates, who have never picked a book from a "black hole" as Ironside so graciously mentioned. I've read Mickiewicz and without any revange I have to acknowledge that he is far, far away from the level of Taras Shevchenko's literary works. Mickiewicz lacks much of ideas, spirit and poetic power that are overfilling Shevchenko's masterpieces. Pan Tadeusz is romantic poetry for someone who likes "Gone with The Wind" type of stories - dresses, feathers and love letters. It has no passion, rebellion, fight for freedom, life of regular people, ideals and harsh criticism which you will find "Kobzar".

Szymborska - is a great poetess. Love many of her poems. Ukrainian poetess Lina Kostenko is of equal greatness and I highly recommend her when "your impression of Ukraine, of course based on virtually no experience" hopefully change by finally picking something to read before making highschool statement.

Ukrainian scientists of the last century you might be interested to look at besides those that I already mentioned:
Chemists: Ivan Horbachevsky, Konstantin Efetov, Volodymyr Vernadsky;
Physicians: Konstantin Buteyko, Ivan Mavrov, Genadij Mavrov;
Physicist - George Zaslavsky, Vadym Adamyan, George Rainich, Aleksander Davydov, George Kistiakowsky (in Manhattan Project, btw), A. Smakula (anti-reflective lens coating), E. Chekaliuk ("Chekaliuk petroleum") and many many others you might find if you care to use internet just a bit, Seanus. Do they do any research projects in Scotland? Or it is just that drop-outs never know what it is? Check out these if you are interested to know about recent cool discoveries made in Ukraine despite lack of funds, salary, etc.:

Your statements, Seanus: "They (Ukrainians) don't appear to have anyone..." and "my impression of Ukraine, of course based on virtually no experience" and "Despite having been able to read Polish well for at least 3 years, I dare say that I wouldn't understand the context or some of the words he uses. The same goes for some Poles so I don't mind."

I feel sorry and pity for you. You can't read simple writing of Lem after this much time banging Polish chick in her country and at the same time you manage to express denigrating opinions on Ukrainian scientists or literature which you have never seen, forget read, in your life? You are funny and a sheep indeed.

er,yes, and, your confusion arises from what? The guy was a hustler, his mark was Uncle Joe...even the sharpest griffter from Praga would tip his hat to that matey.

Poles don't think they're better than anybody

Well, I wish it was at least true for you. Here are a few statements you made that "support" your ideas:

what did Ukraine have and what does it have today? no culture, no sovereignty, no money, so what exactly is amusing you Nathan?

Secondly who the hell Ukraine has that can compare to scientists and discoverers like Maria Sklodowska-Curie, Copernicus, Stefan Drzewiecki, Ignacy Lukasiewicz.

When I mentioned Ukrainian scientists and discoverers you even didn't grant me your reply which would have been necessary after ruthless claims of yours.

two Slavic nations like Poland and Ukraine should definitely be friends. We get along, live together in other countries but can't at home? that seams silly.

Agree with you absolutely on this one. Merry Christmas.

and if a nation doesn't dominate it gets dominated.

Sorry, but this is what some Americans might think. Many people around the world see it differently. You wanted to be a dominating power by attacking militarily weak Iraq and look at yourself now - US is sliding into the grinder and is not respected as it was before. Here is a good example of how senseless domination over another might be a huge mistake.

Poland as one of the largest counties in the region naturally wants to dominate weaker, poorer nations.

Luckily, Polish government seems more intelligent than that. They know how it all end up. But if you mean economy (the topic seems to be about military), then, of course, it is a competition and the better is on the market.

You think it will let some Czechs for example, who think highly of themselves and their culture dominate or influence a nation 4 times larger.

PennBoy, are Czechs even trying to dominate Poland? Regarding thinking high of themselves and their culture I doubt that anyone can beat Polish. But it is Ok and it is totally normal to feel proud towards one's culture etc. Nevertheless, it doesn't mean to **** off all the neighbors around by playing in dominance. Look at big boys: Germany cuddles Russian Federation, the Great Britain and France are friends more than ever in history. Poland follows the same suit. The only exception are hotheads from PF who still fall asleep reading DonQuixot stories and sucking a thumb (hopefully);). If you think that Poland can dominate any of its neighbors - then you are highly mistaken. The best bet would be to cuddle together in love and harmony, otherwise: a soccer ball between the West and RF :)

Oh, and what are you going to do with all the resentful Ukrainians

It just beats me, delphi, why some Poles like to stir the s*it instead of making one's own country some respectful power in the region. By constantly writing their immature attacks against Lithuanians and Ukrainians, they turn themselves into a soccer ball between the West and Russian Federation. I think that it is this dream of being dominant or something. Poland can be anything but that because of the primitive mentality of a fukced up kid. I hope time will come when that chunk of Polish society which draws its country down will finally get out of the sand-box and grow up.

History / Lwów, Wilno ... kresy - Poland have lost enormoust part of our heritage... [389]

Oh! Should I take this as affront?

You can take how and wherever you feel like it. Suit yourself.

We have millennium history beginning in the Kievan Rus, while you have only two decades of imagined independence behind your back.

What does Russia have from Kievan Rus'? The second half of its glorious name? Kievan Rus was always associated with Kiev, not some boggy village Moscow built by Mongols in 13th century. Two decades is a history of your sorry a*se. We have a long history and something to look back into. Russian history is a story of destruction, not creation. And it has nothing to do with Kievan Rus, except a stolen name to look better and more important. Here are a few words said by some known Russian writers about Russian nation which you might know already:

" Народ ,который блуждает по Европе и ищет что можно разрушить, уничтожить только ради развлечения”.( Ф.Достоевский)
Translation: "Nation which wanders around Europe and searches for what to destroy, to annihilate just for the sake of entertainment" by F. Dostoyevsky

"Ох, как тяжко жить в России, в этом смердючем центре физического и морального разврата, подлости, вранья и злодейства". Аксаков
Translation: "Oh how it is difficult to live in Russia, in that stenching center of physical and moral debauchery, baseness, lies and malfaisance" by Aksakov

" Не народ ,а скотина, хам, дикая орда, душегубов и злодеев.” (М.Булгаков)
Translation: "It's not a nation, but a cattle, scoundrel, wild horde of murderers and thieves" by M. Bulgakov
And in regards to the roots of Russians the same very Dostoyevsky said the following:
"Поскребите русского и вы увидите татарина »
Translation: "Scratch a Russian and you will see a Tatar".
This is what you are and not a bit of Kievan Rus in your veins. Your roots are in Mongolia. You want to invent history for your ziemlianka? - steal it from Mongols - Ghengis Khan, Batyj - known people and they are your ancestors, Kostya.

We've slid right in

True, and then slid out :)

Really surprised that Ukraine might actually choose the cruelty of the Muscovites.

Nobody chooses anyone - we prefer to stay away from cruelty expressed by either side.

We've never before thought about those relations as anything different that 'Ukraine should be with us against Russians'.

You, maybe, wanted to say "...be us...". With that statement I would agree.

Ok if you want to be killed, starved, and herded west in a GRAND ARMY as the first line of disposable boys...

We are not in war and our army is not part of some Grand Army you mention. I am not too keen to see my country in any military block: NATO or Russian/China. You are talking about WWII. And I agree on that one. But right now I am happy we are not losing our soldiers for some other country's benefit like many states do today. At the end of the day, the defense of the state is in the hand of its people not whory blocks which will serve you to jackals as soon as you are not necessary anymore.

Have they ever done that?

What should they have asked? How to let others to tell them what to do at their home?

Why?
I don't see sharing a border meaning necessary another world war...

Of course. But the third time will be the last, BB. Let`s not turn Europe in mess again with the final trial somewhere in Argentina, because there won`t be a single stone in the Central Europe unburned this time to run a simple court proceeding. Please, don`t tell that this time it will be different. Let`s live in f* peace at least for a century, BB. Please.

To live we should eat. We cannot stop, we should expand.

You will expand only till your pipes transport oil. As soon as it is gone, I will pretend of praying for you :)

There is no such nation as Ukrainian

Russian is not a nation. That`s for sure.Today, so-called Russian Federation consists of over 80 different republics, which no matter how hard you try to deface by your barbarism will rip along the artificial seams supported by oil which Europe, unfortunately, needs so much. Look at Dubai - when their oil is gone - they have marvels of the world left on this earth, but when your locust-country, which destroys everything around and itself, will be left with no oil - we will have Mars on Earth - deserts with vodka i seliodka. It is simply sad.

with some minor deviations

You are a big time deviation, but you won`t be able to appreciate it as this is what you are - locust with no brains to make the world a better place. You said ``to live we should eat``. Then learn to work, mf.

The West seems to like the whole business and why not: place of no competition where to dump its products and loads of natural resources to feed its people. It is a reasonable policy, very smart. But as usual the West feeds itself and sells the rest just as it did in 1938 in Munich. It is a dog-eat-dog world - no surprises here.

Work / Education in Poland - system and structure [118]

But note that when I was 10 I was gaining very bad marks and when I was 13 I was best student in my school... so you see, it can be too early to judge...

I know. You cannot make one rule to fit all. But the system should be flexible and when a student from let's say hauptschule is making great progress and is interested in going further ease of transfer to realschule should be available.

In Poland we should make the podstawówka exams being a pass to gimnazjum. That would be good as it would be just before the teenage rebelion age when kids starts to be problematic.

Yes, it is a great idea.

Work / Education in Poland - system and structure [118]

They are not highschools my dear.

Oh, I see. Thanks, zetigrek.

You are sent to hauptschule, realschule or gymnasium at the age of 10 (according to wikipedia). They decide about your future at so early age...

This is fantastic! I remember in my class which was a lump-up continuum from grade 1 to grade 10 there were kids that should have been taught separately - they had a quick wit and were wasting their time learning what they already knew. They were bored. And they were eager to learn more than the school program was carved out to provide. I think at age of 10 one can pretty much determine not exactly what a kid is interested to do later in his/her life, but the potential to learn new stuff at school. This separation into different schools is really great.

Where did you attend school? I thought you are Ukrainian

I am. But I was at school back in the SU and they kept us all together like flies in one can :)

Interestingly enough, the financial situation of students is pretty even across the different schools, as it is based on performance, not ability to pay.

Great approach. So, convex, you want to say that already at the highschool level there is a kind of separation between students based on their performance and because of that there are different highschools? If this is so - it is outstanding. I wish I had similar thing back in my childhood :)

History / Lwów, Wilno ... kresy - Poland have lost enormoust part of our heritage... [389]

Thank you ;)

You are welcome, David ;)

80% of revitalisation done in Lwów is done with money from Wrocław for example

Is it a new joke? ;) Can you show me the link to Wroclaw investments into Lviv?

if not for our money your country would be an even bigger dump than it already is.

Główni inwestorzy zagraniczni na Ukrainie to: Stany Zjednoczone, Cypr, Wielka Brytania, Holandia i Rosja.

Translation: Main investors into Ukraine's (economy) are: USA, Cyprus, the Great Britain, the Nethelands and the Russian Federation. Well, I don't see your money here, Sokrates ;)

Another very interesting fact - you will love it, pal:

Polska zainwestowała na Ukrainie ponad 153 mln. USD. Wartość ukraińskich inwestycji w Polsce z kolei przekroczyła 300 mln USD (Huta Częstochowa, FSO, Stocznia Gdańsk).

Translation: Poland invested into Ukraine - 153 mln USD, but Ukraine invested into Poland - 300 mln USD (such as Czestochowa steelmill, Polish car factory FSO in Warsaw and Danzig shipyard). So, Ukraine has invested twice as much in Poland. Hahahah :)

But I won't be mentioning any dumps here :)

all it takes is to expell some half a milion ukrainians working here legaly

Two important words. Europe may kick Polish out of every country you are in and rack the cash flow into Poland. So, what is your problem? Polish need as much work as Ukrainians do. Both work, earn money and send home to support their families. You sound like a kid.

Polands exports to Ukraine are pathetically small

Topping the list of 2007 trade partners for Ukrainian exports were Russia (21.3% of total exports), Turkey (7.1%), Italy (6.4%) and the United States (4.1%).

Ukrainian imports last year were valued at $54.3 billion. Leading suppliers of Ukrainian imports included Russia (28.2% of total imports), Germany (11.7%), Poland (7.6%), China (7%) and Turkmanistan (5.7%).
Not bad, dude, Poland is #3 importing partner of Ukraine. As economies develop I bet Poland will become #2 partner in no time.

You better watch your tongue or ill join Sok&I-S camp

Gruni, you are too intelligent to join these two tight cr*p-holes :)

Now Nathan... Do I speak to you like that? Do I?! :((

You don't, because of the above-mentioned reason.

No need to bash on nobility!

Sorry to hurt your feelings, Gruni. Are you of some noble origin? You see, I treat people equally whether they are royal family or don't know who their parents were. It doesn't matter. We came from nothing and will return there. Although what I like about nobility is the respect to one's roots and cherishing old traditions and symbols of the past. I find it attractive. So, if you are a noble, I send my apology :) Btw, do nobles in Norway kiss other men's hands as Jola does? He seems to like it the most. Ironside too. They express great passion while doing that. It something completely new to me.

History / Lwów, Wilno ... kresy - Poland have lost enormoust part of our heritage... [389]

Poland is letting Ukrainians come to Poland and work.
Poland supports an Ukrainian Eu entry and Nato entry.

Ukraine is letting Polish come to Ukraine if not for work than for tourism. Ukrainians working in Poland bring benefit to your country by producing and paying taxes, which Poland uses. Is this correct? If you didn't need the workers, you wouldn't let Ukrainians in. So, you are not doing it exactly out of sheer love and passion, but for own benefit, which is great.

EU and NATO support and Ukraine's part in it is important for Poland on multiple levels: economy (Germany exports to Poland, Poland might need somebody too to invest and export not out of love, but to gain profits); geopolitics - stable state to be a buffer against Russia; an ally to feel better in a world of hatred and rejection ;) and many others.

So, it is not a single tango, David. It is mutually benefitial relationship.

you count the investments made in Shegyni by Poles buying cigarettes

Again - mutually benefitial :)

Food / Kutia with millet instead of wheat or rice [9]

I've seen something like kutia made with kasza jeczmienna, by someone from Ukraine - a little unusual but nice.

Indeed, very interesting.
Some people I knew from Polish north said that they have never had kutia for Christmas, but those from the eastern territories said that this is an essential part of Christmas and that they do it with rice. In my home we do it every Christmas, but with wheat grains only.

Actually rice-based kutia was served in some manorhouses of pre-war Poland because wheat was regarded as too peasanty

What??? But rich are usually inbred, so no surprise of this type of thoughts in their dull skulls. Better for more intelligent and simple people :)

Some people are so stupid even I know that Radziwill family is Ukrainian some people should think before they speak.

They are Lithuanian noble family which eventually spread out into all the Eastern Europe. To say that they are Polish or Ukrainian as such is incorrect.

I can introduce you, if you like, and you can kiss the Prince's hand.

Do you still do that? Do you like licking men's hands, jola? Nice name you have - manly ;) I am not that much into nobility cr*p and women are the only creatures I might consider kissing in the hand :)
