History / Why are Jews pestering Poland for "proper" WW2 monetary restitution/reparations? [750]

Too bad we see all setteled and give nothing

Everything is settled. Poland has no legal claim against the Federal Republic of Germany, it's not the same country as existed before WW2 and the Federal Republic took sovereignty from the Allied occupation, which very clearly and decisively ruled that it was occupying "terra nulla", not the German Empire.

International courts have also made it clear that the Federal Republic isn't the same country.

History / If Poles were antisemitic, would they ...? [240]

Who do you suggest would have the real life experience and qualifications to teach me today?

You'll notice that the experiences personally related to you by your parents are being downplayed in favour of a narrative which blames Jewish people for everything.

Jews deserve reparations.

The problem is that it's not really Jews demanding it, but certain very well connected groups. A lot of ordinary Jewish people are deeply unhappy about them, because the money is spent on their first class international travel and five star hotels rather than on helping Jewish people.

History / For what the Germans owe Poland one trillion U.S. dollars? [299]

Then, they should treat welfare as an earned benefit. You have to work for x years to receive y benefit.

Nope, welfare is available to anyone resident here. If someone comes from Iraq with 10 children, they're entitled to receive a cash benefit of $1173/monthly without conditions. That's before other social welfare benefits too.

So, for instance, our Iraqi friend can be working in a chicken factory for 40 hours a week. He'll receive just over $1303 in child support, he won't pay any income tax, he can bring his 10 children and wife, he'll be eligible for other social benefits, and he will essentially get much more from Poland than he contributes.

All part of the masterplan.

The side benefit would be that a prosperous Poland will be able to reduce the welfare benefits

Except Poland is actually increasing them, not decreasing them. The current government considers welfare to be an integral part of their electoral strategy.

The only hope for them would be to split.

Why would they split when no-one supports such a ridiculous idea?

It's on the rise and it's growing fast.

I really don't know why you keep pushing this fantasy when the reality is that the V4 are nowhere near integrated. There's very little cross border cooperation compared to German-Polish cooperation, for a start.

Still, nice to see that you think that Poland should normalise relations with Russia. Nice to know where nationalist sympathies really lie, after all.

Food / POLISH RECIPES! [287]

it does depend on how its cooked.

Same with Polish food though. An awful lot of those "kuchnia domowa" places make appalling food that relies on obscene amounts of salt and artificial flavourings, but if you get somewhere that actually understands Polish food as not being peasant food, then it can be a revelation.

A great article here - economist.com/eastern-approaches/2013/08/08/what-communism-did-to-polish-food - like many things in Poland, something considered "traditionally Polish" is actually just PRL-era stuff.

That's why it's going to be based on conventional assured destruction.

It's not going to be based on anything like that. Poland and Germany are military allies, and that won't change, no matter how many Korwinists and Nationalists say otherwise.

History / Why are Jews pestering Poland for "proper" WW2 monetary restitution/reparations? [750]

The Jewish demands are completely and utterly nonsensical for several reasons:

They're not even Jewish demands, but American Jewish demands. From what I can gather from the Israeli internet, there's a lot of resentment towards these guys because they do nothing to help actual Israelis in need.

The one good thing is that almost everyone in Poland seems to be agreed on telling them to go to hell.

History / Why are Jews pestering Poland for "proper" WW2 monetary restitution/reparations? [750]

Agreed. I'm 100% against any and all property restitution claims.

Who is making these claims on Poland?

A lengthy, but good read: ynetnews.com/articles/1,7340,L-3338282,00.html

In short: Jewish-American interests with very powerful friends in the US Congress from both parties. Even the Israelis hate them.

And show me kindly at least one paragraph in an international law which would oblige Poland to do so.

I wish the Polish government would, frankly speaking, tell them to go f**k themselves.

The 1960 treaty makes it crystal clear that they can get lost.

In the event that such claims are presented directly by nationals of the United States to the Government of Poland, the Government of Poland will refer them to the Government of the United States.

That, to me, is straightforward. Get lost, Americans.

Law / Getting a Poland permanent residence permit on the basis of forever waiting for a temporary residence permit? [2]

My question is, if this cycle continued for another 6.5 years, would I then be eligible for a permanent residence permit,

No. You might be able to apply for a "tolerated stay" permit in those circumstances, but in your case, it would almost certainly be denied.

The law regarding permanent residency says that you have to have been temporarily resident - but because you never obtained a temporary residence permit, you haven't started the clock.

USA, Canada / Bilateral Visa Waiver Agreement between USA and Poland [47]

I hiked a few times between Wisla and Jablunkow in the Beskidy in the then Czechoslovakia on a beer bender

Over by Katarzynka? I was given some very strange looks there by locals a few years ago...

Where were the random controls?

From memory, all by car unless mentioned otherwise

Cesky Tesin (control leaving CZ)
Cieszyn (control entering CZ on foot at the crossing next to the castle)
Frankfurt (Oder) (entering DE, several times)
Świecko (entering PL)
Ludwigsdorf (entering DE)
Zgorzelec (entering PL on foot at Most JPII)
Kudowa-Zdrój (entering PL)
Mala Cermna (entering CZ)
Kostrzyn nad Odrą (leaving PL)
Lucni Bouda (entering/leaving CZ in Karkonosze - they moved on to the Dom Slaski afterwards)
Lysa Polana (entering SK)

And that's just the controls on the Polish borders. I've seen quite a lot of controls on other Schengen borders, including the Austrian controls at Nickelsdorf last summer where every travel document was visually checked and non-EU citizens were stopped.

USA, Canada / Bilateral Visa Waiver Agreement between USA and Poland [47]

Not quite. For instance, buses get stopped quite regularly (especially to/from Prague and Berlin), and I've been stopped quite a few times for random controls. The most interesting one was being stopped by Czech border guards in Karkonosze - they were specifically controlling people on the tourist border crossings in the mountains.

It can also be an issue if you get stopped for something like jaywalking abroad - if they check your passport and see that you've overstayed, it can be instant detention/deportation.

I have a printed copy of this webpage with me whenever I cross any Polish border and I suggest that other Americans in Poland do the same.

However, that only applies if you cross a non-Schengen border. If you're more than 90 days in Schengen, you can't visit other Schengen countries.

Law / Stay in Poland without work [4]

And will that work permit be valid for another company in future

Unfortunately no, but your wife and child will have legal residency based on you working in Poland.

Make sure to try and apply for the Blue Card, as you'll get permanent residency within 4 years.

Please also invite your friends to work here. We need more immigrants here.

News / Poland's young voters turning to the right - DW news [105]

Delph can prattle on all he wants with his pan european BS,but the end is coming.

Which means Poland is in a terrible situation. Poland is relying heavily on freedom of movement, services and goods - without that, Poland has no competitive advantage. Polish farmers will struggle without European funds, while factories and outsourced back offices will all relocate to countries that remain within the core European zone.

The EU isn't going to go away and be replaced by some fantasy construct. It's going to come back as a revamped Franco-German union where the benefits are dependent on agreeing to deep political integration. Poland and Poles will always want German products, but Germans can build stuff wherever they get the most generous deal.

Imagine that the AfD take power in Germany. Why would they want anything other than a one-sided deal with Poland? Poland needs the jobs, after all.

And if it leads to dissolution of the EU so much for the better.

I really do look forward to seeing how Poland can win against a strong new federation based on France and Germany ruling the show with a multitude of smaller countries supporting them.

we should stop building a competing industrial and economic centre and rely mostly on one located in Germany. That's a short sighted policy.

Poland isn't building anything of the sort. It's mostly relying on state-owned monopolies to screw the citizens over (see the profits of Orlen or Lotos, both of which could be used to reduce fuel prices for Polish drivers) while heavily discouraging genuine entrepreneurship.

Poland's economy is based on two pillars right now: outsourcing (which won't last forever) and using cheap labour to build stuff for foreign companies.

News / Poland's young voters turning to the right - DW news [105]

In Poland most of the young people have conservative and right-wing political views.

Another lie. In fact, most young people don't even vote, and that Polish electoral history shows that the youth vote often changes rather rapidly.

.even in Thüringen the AfD runs head-to-head with the CDU. Not to forget the other parties...that is in no way a majority.

It won't be anywhere near a majority. They still need to beat die Linke, and the Greens are mounting a challenge there too.

please stick to the Polish political scene

Anyway, it makes more sense to have German as the main EU working language now that Ireland is the only English-speaking country left in the Union.

It's a difficult one, because the CEE region uses English and not German.

What a joke The whole concept of The EU is!!

What a terrible joke it is, an economic and political union that has led to a peaceful and prosperous Europe.

Tell us, why was Poland so poor and backwards without the EU?

But Poland and the V4 just had the most successful 30 year growth period in their history.

The truth is that even if the V4 got together and formed a serious economic union (which they won't), it would be trivial for Germany and France to pick off the Czechs and Slovaks by offering them all the work that's currently carried out in Poland and Hungary. If you're the Czech or Slovak PM, do you refuse a huge amount of new investment for unreliable Polish partners and Hungarians that are in bed with Russia? Of course not.

Poland (and the V4) in order to grow in a more balanced form needs to break this cycle and start building strong

More fantasies. The reality is that the V4 have very little to offer. The Czech Republic is becoming a high wage centre with structural problems, Slovakia has no interest in moving away from the current Austro-German economic model, Hungary is tied up heavily with Russia and Poland will move back into the German orbit as soon as the government changes.

And it reflects in the actual results.

It is worth noting that the border area to Poland has since then seen a remarkeable increase in burglaries and theft.

Brandenburg in particular. I remember the stories in 2007 well, and not to mention how Poles were subjected to violence and harassment in the early 1990's in places like Frankfurt (Oder). Anyone that believes that the AfD or NPD are going to be nice and cuddly towards Poles while hating Muslims is living in a fantasy land.
