Genealogy / Jankowice Town in Poland - records [77]

its just my username, sobieski was the general that freed Vienna from the turks way back in the day. maybe you are a descendant of him.

I swear I heard that town name a gazillion times before.

it was in my mums words, some lil back water village that got destroyed by the Germans in the second world war.

im not sure i want to post my last name over the internet considering there are very few people with my last name, in Australia especially.

that is why i was trying to locate the town records to find out what the original spelling of my name was.

i dont think it was americanized as i reside in australia and have the same spelling as those in america.

Genealogy / Jankowice Town in Poland - records [77]

anything up til the 1940's, my family really know nothing of their family name heritage as that town was burnt down and most records destroyed with it. i can only go back as far as my great grandparents.

Does anyone know if there are any records (or where to locate them) of any villagers from this town?

I understand it was burnt down by those nice german soldiers during WW2 and now would be in current day Belarus.

Australia / Any Polish people living in Australia [32]

my situation is the same as Lef's, im sure between us we can be a wealth of information.

Buying stores well a bit complicated, we have a 10% GST on goods that meet the umbrella of the GST.

This is already embedded in the purchase price and not added on when you get to the til.

News / Polish Immigrants Leave America for Europe [210]

I thought Native American is the "race" allocated to those who are indigenous to North America.... Meaning above Central America to Alaska...

A simple search on the internet would have solved this ages ago

Natvie American defined as:
A person who is an American Indian, Eskimo, Aleut or Native Hawaiian, and regarded as such by the community of which the person claims to be a part. Native Americans must be documented members of a North American tribe, band or otherwise organized group of native people who are indigenous to the continental United States and proof can be provided through a Native American Blood Degree Certificate (ie, tribal registry letter, tribal roll register number).

Genealogy / Is tallness common among Polish people? [201]

How would one answer the question "Are Poles fat"? It's all subjective opinion and the answer should be: "It depends - some of them are, some are not."

Yes, it depends, my dads family is from a rural farming area and my mums family is from a smaller town. Im sure you may find there is some common link between their heights and their environments.

it isn't a silly stereotype, silly stereotype is that all poles do is drink.
