News / Pubs in Poznan kick out Roma? [256]

Yep,theres loads of Romany words in our local dialect, crazy thought that theyd be understood that far east though:)

I've heard it suggested the word "lollipop" could be derived from Rom words for "Red Apple" (think toffee apples)

Do they also use Chaver/chaveh in that area?

Why Aye, Man.

The word "m1nge" is a Romany word too. I found that out in Macedonia when my mate commented on "all the m1nge" at the local uni and a Macedonian friend said, "Oh, that's like the Gypsy wrod 'M....'" I wouldn't have minded except we were on a bus passing near the Gypsy quarter and the bus was full of old Rom women.

No,its not "only jews" we are taught about in school....and,BTW, I bought the video when I was 13/14,is it not true that most schools around Europe avoid the holocaust untill age 15?

My nephew had classes about Holocaust when he was about 11 (year or two ago)... they all watch "Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" now.

.local dialect around here uses Gadjer as young, slightly dodgy lad.

Where's 'local' to you? I know in Tyneside and the Borders "gadji" is used for a 'bloke'

come on,you lost credibility there with the irish pikey running out of beer money bit.....:)

No, really. They were 'pikeys', not Rom (so no Gadjo). They'd been camped up the top of the town for a few weeks. The pub wasn't trashed... they just ended up trying to buy pints with fake pound coins.

Given that one place refused service to a violinist who played there and was there with his grand-daughter, it rather seems that they're blacklisting all Roma.

Maybe he was also there when the trouble occurred. Maybe it was his playing which started it!

And pubs do shut down when there is a traveller's wedding or funeral because of some of the travellers giving the rest a bad name.

A local pub in England had the trick of allowing the Travellers in for St Paddy's Day, letting them drink the bar dry and spend themselves out, and then barred them the next day when they had no more money.

I have only recently read about Romani in WWII death camps, unfortunately it has not had the publicity that it should have had in my life.

Yep, Mengele was quite fond of them... in a 'professional' sense.

England and Scotland used to have hanging laws against Romani, which is why there are/were so many settlements along the borders. The laird of Rosslyn refused to implement the laws, hence the large community which used to live there.

Even though the local police failed to act in this case, it seems it is being addressed by the PL government. So can we say clearly that racism towards the Roma is completely acceptable / tolerated by all Poles?

It could just be that the article was printed so soon after the complaint was made that the police haven't had time... OR maybe they don't see anything to investigate.

Yeahh, not letting disruptive people in a restaurant is exactly like pogrom.

I think he's comparing it to the "No Jews Allowed" laws.

Of course the big question here is whether the pubs are just blacklisting ALL Rom and Rom looking people (not good) OR barring identified/known troublemakers and their associates (acceptable but difficult to prove)

Fair point.

Indeed. It is the Polish beggars who have been reported to the local Police in Olsztyn for being abusive and aggressive.

Comparing noisy and disruptive Romas, to the situation of Jews during Nazi time is just unfair to the Jews.

The Rom were usually in the next section of the camp.

History / Poland obliged to make war reparations to Austria and Germany after WWI. Why? [119]

In that case I will give it a go(:

Yeah, I've had a couple of exchanges with authors via their publishers.

Just pondering, maybe the reparations were just payments for equipment etc which Polish authorities used after 1918 which belonged to Germany/Aistria fprmerly.

Just an idea.

History / Poland obliged to make war reparations to Austria and Germany after WWI. Why? [119]

"In 1930 a Ukrainian nationalist organisation funded from Germany begun a campaign of terrorism and sabotage." p344 again I wasn't aware that they got their money from Germany, was anybody else?

I recall hearing something about this but I forget where... I'll dig around. I think there were also elements of Lithuanian nationalist activity in Germany during the interwar period.

Of course, it's important to consider that rather than the funding being German, it might have been coming from Germany (geographically) from Ukrainian sympathisers or nationalists.

The first paragraph of this page has some answers: encyclopediaofukraine.com/pages/O/R/OrganizationofUkrainianNationalists.htm

Does anybody know why?

There's a contact for him on his website. has anyone written to ask?

Law / Poland car insurance: cash only? [14]

but everything to do with the dealership being a bit dodgy.

These guys are the main Skoda dealer in town. Full showroom, the lot.

re: the bank transfer, I think it's just a case of them doing the paperwork face to face and it being a bit complicated to do a transfer.

News / 10 km of a road in Poland costed... 2,3 bilions of PLN! [13]

The problem is, they have to take the lowest bid by law.

Yep, so no incentive for quality work. The crap company gets the job.

Three companies go to tender for a road job.

The German company says "2 million Euroes",
The Ukrainian company says "500,000 Euroes"
The Warmian-Mazurian company says "2,500,000 Euroes".

The minister's eyes pop! "How can you say 2,500,000 Euroes? It's even more than the Germans."

The builder says, "One million for you, one million for me and we get the Ukrainian guy to do the job."

Law / Poland car insurance: cash only? [14]

Which one?

Hestia.

Didn't they inform you (amount, deadline etc) that you can pay by bank transfer?

My wife's the main holder of the insurance (it's technically her car... another annoying story) and she is usuually pretty hot on admin etc. She says she contacted the main office and they said we'd have to deal with the showroom office direct (less paperwork etc) but apparently the office nixed the transfer idea too. Must be some crossed lines somewhere.

The credit card company takes a percentage for processing, between 2-4%. Car dealers and insurance resellers work on low coms, so that is the most obvious reason.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks.

Law / Poland car insurance: cash only? [14]

I thought it was the showroom itself. When we bought the car we wanted to put down a deposit and they wouldn't take plastic...

by bank transfer certainly if they are so backward with it.

Thinking of it for the future. Still need to get the quote, though.

We contacted the main office in town and they said we had to go through the showroom.

Law / Poland car insurance: cash only? [14]

The end of the month approaches, as does the renewal date of the car insurance. sadly the latter gets here first.

As the car is still on HP we need to go to the salon and get the approved insurance. My wife rang them to ask if this year we could pay by credit card, as i really don't like walking in with 1000 zlots in cash.

Apparently not... not the fault of skoda... it's the insurance company rules, we are told.

Now, considering my dentist takes credit cards, why the hell can't an insurance company?

Travel / Pot holes on Polish roads - to swerve or not to swerve [26]

Just paid over 500 zlots for repairs to shocks etc.

I think if everyone sent their bills to the local government then they might get the idea!

BTW, does anyone know anything about road building/maintenance?

To an idiot like me, this practice of patching up each individual hole seems a bit crazy as it seems the area around it is weaker and is next to go (the next year). Wouldn't re-laying larger sections be more effective?

Life / Hollywood Lyrics, why a Polish girl? ('A Polish girl in America') [37]

Nope.. it didn't really become widespread until the 50's with the beatniks:

According to this site it was first recorded in 1949:
etymonline.com/index.php?l=d
daddy c.1500, colloquial dim. of dad, with -y (3). Daddylonglegs is from 1814; daddy-o is first recorded 1949, from bop talk.

So we can imagine it being used a little before that. There are also phrases in songs like "Whiskey in the jar" "whack-fol me daddy o".

Possibly derived from the term 'daddy of ...' 'daddy o ...'

Love / Polish girls pretend to be sick and ill most of the time [35]

a mix of the class cheat, playing truant and the culture of ... if i can get away with not doing it, why bother.

But when you ring their parents they confirm it.

Maybe they are avoiding you.

Damn, must stop buying deodorant on the russian market.
