'If the Warsaw uprising were today... ' -Interesting question I heard today

got me thinking--this was asked on the radio today. If the Warsaw uprising were today- how many people would fight for the freedom of others and how many young people in Warsaw would, without hesitation, volunteer to fight?

I understand the environment and society are different but do you think people would come together or divide?

My husband would fight without hesitation- he would probably be first in line but I do think Warsaw is a "me" society and a lot would not be so willing.

Yes, I would go, too, but not bare-handed. First they would have to show me secret magazines full of weapons and ammo.

Shyt, I think I would go without that, too. I would make myself a bow or sth. I am a hothead, like all youngsters, that`s all.

I think the response would be unequivocal. Poles, both young and old would rise up and fight oppression.
Times may have changed but a Pole's spirit and the need to be free certainly hasn't. IMHO

I am sorry- but I don't agree with this at all. There are those in todays Poland that think they are above this. I can't imagine some nouveau riche guy going into battle-

The whole mentality to war is much different now, I would only put my life on the line for my family and thats about it. If my country went to war the only people that should deserve to die would be the politicians - the idiots responsible for it.

In any case what good would untrained soldiers be? it would be a massacre, with the weapons they have nowadays you'd be dead before you even made it to the battleground.

As for the army and patriotism, no way, not ever for me.

I can't imagine some nouveau riche guy going into battle-

I spent some time with a Jewish client a few years back in Poland, he was a lawyer among other things, a great big fat dude, he was (like all Israelis) a part time soldier as well. He used to go on duty for so many months a year. Weird for us, normal to them.

can you see some 30 something guy, who drives a bmw, white jeans, tommy hillfiger and an armani belt buckle (I just saw a guy like this last week) deck shoes, ray bans and stupid hair deciding to fight?

I would expect with Polands war history- more would be willing to fight- but I think it has changed.
I am just interested- I do have my own thoughts on it- but I am curious to what others think.

I use my husband as an example. He would at the blink of an eye drop everything and fight- even though he has a good income- he doesn't think he is above the fight where I expect many do think they are better than that.

Exactly! I believe he would fight to preserve what's his. Your metrosexual would pick up a gun and fight if he had to. His "Syrena" genes would kick in and he would indeed resist.

After 5 years of living in an occupied town, when enemy soldiers deprive you of everything, normal life, freedom, the right to education, make you an Untermensch and a blue collar worker at best, impose a curfew and ratio the food, when your life is in danger every single day, you can get shot at every corner and your family can be taken to Auschwitz for no reason at all - yes, I think even the BMW-Hillfiger metrosexual would go and fight. There's just so much one can take. That's why the uprising was, sadly, unevitable. It wasn't fighting for patriotic ideas and symbols as much as for the dignity and basic human rights.

getting slaughtered is getting slaughtered, history or not. To give a life or to expect it to be given in the name of a country is pure madness. Fair enought if your life is threatened and that of your family as still is the case in some countries.

I simply cant get my head around joining the army and then being shipped off to some far away land to kill mainly poor people. Its brainwashing at its finest and mans ultimate failure.

That's why the uprising was, sadly, unevitable. It wasn't fighting for patriotic ideas and symbols as much as for the dignity and basic human rights.

That reminds me of the William Wallace fight speech from Braveheart.

Don't know until it happens. All people react differently in life death situations.

City warfare is different than battles in fields. It has been proven many times. Somalia 1992? Seen film Black Hawk Down? Did Americans win the operation after killing 1000+ rebels?

Come on, just give people kalashnikovs with enough ammo, a few simple antitank launchers and you will see what they can do with it in urban areas. :):):):)

Thats a good point i think Stalingard is a good example, the Germans hit that city with everything they had time and time again, what they did was create the ideal defensive conditions for the Russians. With all the bombed out buildings etc, perfect for hiding troops.
