"Commandos" were regular units in their own armies but to achieve their goals they used irregular methods (behind enemy lines). That's why they were called "Commandos"!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Operations_Executive

The Special Operations Executive (SOE) (sometimes referred to as "the Baker Street Irregulars") was a World War II organisation of the United Kingdom. It was initiated by Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Minister of Economic Warfare Hugh Dalton on July 22, 1940, to conduct warfare by means other than direct military engagement. Its mission was to encourage and facilitate espionage and sabotage behind enemy lines and to serve as the core of the Auxiliary Units, a British resistance movement.
...
The SOE directly employed or controlled just over 13,000 people. It is estimated that SOE supported or supplied about 1,000,000 operatives worldwide.

Nuking the Japanese was a bad decision (in retrospect), so was Dresden..

Dresden a bad decision!! only because of the outcome and possibly from an American point of view. Hitler was bombing Britian for years, if you can give it be prepared to take it. Ane eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth.

Dresden was an allied triumph and totally in line with current war tactics started by Germany. WTF.

If you want to talk about war attorocities i think America wins the gold medal with stripes in Vietnam. Innocent civilians, mothers, fathers and children massacred by trigger happy GI's wanting some pay back. The Vietnamese played you guys like a tune, we all know the outcome of that war.

What triumph? What was achieved with that?

If they intended to go behind enemy lines they did for sure...

When the Italians captured David Stirling, he ended up in Colditz castle as a prisoner of war for the rest of the war. His brother Bill Stirling and 'Paddy' Blair Mayne took command. Prior to the Normandy Invasion, SAS men were inserted into France as 4-men teams to help maquisards of the French Resistance.
In Operation Houndsmith, 144 SAS men parachuted with jeeps and supplies into Dijon, France. During and after D-Day they continued their raids against fuel depots, communications centres and railways. They did suffer casualties at one stage the Germans executed 24 SAS soldiers and a US Air Force pilot.

SOE maybe but not the raids i mentioned and i have been to Sacsehausen and there is a picture of the British sailors arriving there in what is clearly RN attire.

I do not doubt some Germans were shot "willy nilly" but there was no wholesale order out on what were regular soldiers and not spies.

I don't think it there has been so many German commandos making it to GB or to the US but lots of allied spies/commandos landed in Germany or in the neighbourhood, so what do you know!

Face it..that order was nothing uncommon, every side behaved the same in this regard. It only became a war crime for Germans (after the war).

It killed German civilians and levelled a city, put Hitlers Reich in terror distance of the Allies reep what you sow and all that. A demorolising inpact on the German nationals morale, a major victory for the allies. A little bit of pay back basically.

reep what you sow and all that.

i think this is what you were after from Arthur Harris

The Nazis entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everyone else, and nobody was going to bomb them. At Rotterdam, London, Warsaw, and half a hundred other places, they put their rather naive theory into operation. They sowed the wind, and now they are going to reap the whirlwind.[12][13]

Payback for sure.
But please be honest about it and cut the crap like "military reason" or "demoralizing effect" and such.
Like with the Blitz on London these attacks proved to have a rallying effect on the German civilians instead...

They sowed the wind, and now they are going to reap the whirlwind.[12][13]

Well...I say the "wind" was sowed already during the negotiations for the Treaty of Versailles. You reaped the whirlwind (Hitler) later for that!

Yes and we know the outcome of a certain war in the 1770's too. Somebody was played a tune there as well. Now that somebody is more or less a colony themselves. How you love to chirp about Vietnam.. if the American military wanted your shi.t heap island you wouldn't last a year or so. You can barely secure provinces in Afghanistan half the time. Look how many ground battles you lost during WWII. How the Wehrmacht smacked you around . Until you had to beg us to help. Now you sit back and criticize , fat boy.

Germans / Russians killed 13 million civilians on the Eastern Front. Vietnam and Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Iraq don't even come close to touching those numbers. You dont think the British bombing of Europe in WWII didn't kill any French and German civilians?

Anyway, I wouldn't open my hole about atrocities so much you . How many spear chucking Zulus did your slaughter? American Indians? Boers? Any darkie to you was a savage and destined for destruction. How amusing the British love off wagging their fingers in others' faces.

BTW: Dresden was needless carnage and yes it was stupid. So was Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The French were responsible for Versailles.

Well...and they being forced to sign the armistice in the same place where they sowed the wind was a payback of historic proportions! ;)

Yes,the French acted totally stupid at that time while English had foreseen the future better and did not want to sign the treaty(some of them).Keynes had warned against it.But who heard them at that time?French thought they were the new Napoleons and they will bury Germany forever.

In 1945 US knew better.

Well that and the upcoming cold war where the new West needed the Germans (or at least their half of them)...

The US realized that if Germany failed they should pay for Germany. This is a bit more advanced thinking than the one imposed by French in 1918.

No,the Wind was sown when during the First world war the german airforce launched the very first terror bombing campaigns against civilians, british civilians.....

Well, they weren't in the late 30's. Which is what the goddamn discussion is about, Professor.

What late 30s? Brits werent fighting the Germans in the late 30s, they declared war but there wasnt any serious fighting.

If GB is doing well right (and thats debatable) it's thanks to an EU more or less created with the US's help and assistance. Surely, your finely tuned mind can grasp that.

Last i checked the founding countries were France, West Germany, Belgium Luxemburg and Italy, i dont know how you manage to squeeze any US involvement in there but given your lack of education and chauvinism thats not a suprise really.

Seriously, best to practice what you preach, Professor. You aren't nearly as exalted as you think. Your farts stink like any other. However I bet you can tell what the Soviets smell like.

Whatever, its just fun to point out to you how you humiliate yourself with every next post you make, its not that you're nasty, there's some pretty nasty anti-Polish fvcks like The Other or Harry, you're just amusingly stupid :)

USA had nothing to do with EU, its an exclusively European venture, as for WW2 US was doing horribly badly against the Germans, American soldiers were by comparison cowardly, incompetent and unwilling to sacrifice themselves, sorry buddy but the movies like "Band of Brothers" dont really reflect on the historically poor performance of the American soldiers.

Then again all Western countries performed badly when compared to Germans or Russians (or Poles when they still had a standing force).

No,the Wind was sown when during the First world war the german airforce launched the very first terror bombing campaigns against civilians, british civilians.....

The only war crime during WWI was the hunger blockade of the Brits...starving more then 600.000 german civilians forcing the gov to subscribe to this slimy treaty...you better shut the **** up!

Those soldiers who kicked you '41 from Dunkirk into the sea surely relished the revenge!

Better Brits hold their feet still when serious warrior nations talk...without the US in the first war and later the US PLUS the Russians in the second war you would had been toast.

I wonder where you take the chuzpa from to talk as if you had won anything!
But now we won the peace and you are going to be marginalized in Europe anyhow...put down where you belong. I really doubt the US is still interested in your vaunted "special relationship", coming to help little begging Brits.

Soon it's only you and us...little England!

Not like you BB to come out with silly comments. I don't think ishthatu understood your point about the versaille treaty creating the climate for the rise of the national socialists.

He is an idiot! Needs to be told some hard truths..

And yes, in the beginning it was all about revenge!

Even now 70 years later it's abit about revenge too. What were these wars about if not about the new food chain in Europe? Germany tried to come out on top since the unification...with GB and France trying everything to stop it...now take a look! ;)

forcing the gov to subscribe to this slimy treaty...

Slimy treaty that forced you to acknowledge that Poland takes back the land you have stolen?:)

Better Brits hold their feet still when serious warrior nations talk

True true, Brits never fought a 100 years war, they never burned down Washington and never kicked arse of the German navy and airforce, Brits are definitely not a serious warrior nation because they sucked in the past 2 wars.

If anything the Falklands show what a pathetic bunch the Brits are.

The only war crime during WWI was the hunger blockade of the Brits

And the German massacre of some 6000 civilians in Belgium.

Can't help it..I don't like the Brits (as political entity) ;)

It's satisfying to see them falling free and Germany at the top in Europe after 100+ years war and rivalry. Sometimes happy endings happen! :)

No one likes Brits as a political entity, honest British goverment is like French bravery, hot German women and honestly bought Polish cars - non existent.

I guess Normandy in '44 was revenge for Dunkirk in '41.

...without the US in the first war and later the US PLUS the Russians in the second...

Funny you should mention the Russians in the second, bringing up the Treaty of Versialles and all, wasn't it the Germans who sent Ulyanov and his Bolsheviks into Russia? "Biting the hand that feeds."

Lets see what happens to Germany with a women in the top job. Look what Thatcher did to the UK, without sounding to much like a chauvinistic pig i dont think women should have responsabilities like that they have too many hormones and all that crap they have to deal with to make rational decisions 100% of the time. Sometimes theres just no reasoning with them.

Like the Brits as a political entity? neither do many Brits anymore.

It's satisfying to see them falling free and Germany at the top in Europe after 100+ years war and rivalry. Sometimes happy endings happen! :)

Quite right sir, Germany has always been the little brother that didnt get enough attention from Mum and Dad, God knows they tried and tried. They are the power house of Europe and about time too, their legacy other than the obvious will be told by history. Their a long way from any real power, merely scraps from the table.
