Poland suffered during World War II, undoubtedly the greatest human and material losses per capita. The vast majority of these losses was the result of systematic German terror, as a symbol, next to the murder of about 5 million Polish citizens, was the destruction of Warsaw. Loss of the population of the Polish capital losses exceeded several times over France, not to mention the other occupied countries of Western and Czechoslovakia.
