When I think of Polish patriotism - I automatically think of recent history - those fighting that rotting,dead, criminal in the sunglasses, and the general commie scum - and not about the glorious Polish past.
It's a shame on Polish society that now people are richer and the banking system is stable, Poles really need to address the recent past, and not live on past distant romance.
I am reading the English version of "Aushwitz Volunteer" the story of Witold Pilecki. Do you know if the movie " The Death of Witold Pilecki" is available with English subtitles??
Unfortunately no..I think it is mainly because this part of the history is still very new to us (the Poles) since the war against communism (1944-1963) has been kept completely out of the publics eyes, or they would just lie about them calling them traitors or bandits.. thus you know, firstly we need to make our own society aware of this sad/glorious part of the history first.. then we can export it :)

its based on real events, the main character is a girl named Danuta Siedzikowna, nickname: Inka, a war orphan who decides to go to the forest- aka join the underground when the soviets invade. Since the anti-communist underground army respected the Geneva convention she was never given a gun, as she was "a medical officer". She was caught by the UB, and thrown in for a show-trial. The nationwide newspapers called her "Bloody Inka" and the propaganda told the people that she had killed unarmed UB officers.
She was beaten, tortured and raped, but she never gave up anyone, no name, no address, just before the execution she had managed to send a short message out to her grandma saying " Granny, I have behaved in the way I should".
I reckon the premier with the bushy eyebrows should have been allowed to do his job, and nail those commies. I know Harry and others wouldn't agree about the "witch-hunt " of that regime - but my wifees' family were landowners in a small town and were properly ****** by those thieving bastards.

I agree with you Krak. The old films are the best - maybe because there were no special effects and they had to tell a historical story, even if the Polish Film Institute had it's hands tied by the Party.
Black and white rules, and Westerplatte was a well made film of it's kind. I will not be bothering with the remake.
Exactly, the remake's BS anyway, crappy revisonist film.. when I was growing up eveyrone knew that the Westerplatte defenders were heroic soldiers that never asked a question, never feraed the enemy and died in the defence of Fatherland.. now this is being undermined teaching the youth that its okay to be scared and to try and betray your fellows to save your own skin..
I am no commie :) but I have to say that the commie cinema knew what kinda of message to give and if you wouldstrip all the commie bullcrap that they were forced to link in, thestories of those film is quite remarkable and tahts how it should have stayed.
The remake shows a conflictbetween the commander - who is being called a fanatic and a secon-in-command who is a coward.. I think that sometimes what the film makers take us realism is actually a falsification of truth which also dishonours the Heros.
Films in general nowadays don't seem to have "character actors" as in former times, since it seems so relatively few people as a whole have either character or personality any longer! Scripts/Dialogue reflect the times, and these are sorry times, I'm tellin' ya.
My favourite was "Hubal", esp. that I saw it in communist Poland. The scene of Hubal and his freedom-fighters marching up to the altar amid the singing of "Boże coś Polskę" choked up many a Pole.
....sounds like the reaction of the crowd I was with when I first saw "Zakazane Piosenki"! When the first strains of the Warszawianka began, I saw my neighbor start dabbing her eyes with a tissue. And by the time our heroine played by that wonderful actress whose first name's Szarafka (or something like that), slowly began singing the final stanza of the above tune, there was scarcely a dry eye in the house (including my own).
Ryszard Bugajski died on the 7th of June. For me he was second to Wajda as a director in being able to illustrate the history of our nation .Every film he made was important to polish culture.
Przesłuhanie/Interogation was a film about UB imprisoning and torturing an actress in stalinist poland. It was banned and ordered destroyed in 1982 and the director managed to make a vhs copy which was then shown in the solidarity community. In 89 the film could finally be screened legaly and won awards at Cannes.
General Nil told the story of how the communists chased down and executed the General in post war poland Układ zamknięty/The Closed Circuit. was set in poland in the late 1990s, based on a true story it demonstrated how post communist apparatchiks stole the wealth of businesses through brutal methods. Denied funding during PO's reign, the director sought funding from business organisations who understood the pathology of Poland in 2013.
I have not seen Zaćma/Blindess yet but it is about but it about life of a stalinist criminal in poland meeting the cardinal.

"Przesluchanie" was indeed a frightening film. It was hardly my favorite Polish movie, and scarcely patriotic:-)
Hmm, yes, very depressive. Well, to some extent it is patriotic as it shows what stalinist communists were able to do with people who they considered enemies of the system. After watching the film, the youth should know what to think of stalinism. In Poland Stalin is considered a mass murderer, in Russia - a hero.
I mean, " Niewinne Czarodzieje" or "Rozdrodze Café", although from two different generations, were both entertaining, while scarcely 'political' in content.
