Zieminski - Help getting started with family research

Hi

Can anyone please point me in the right direction to help me begin researching my father's family history please. Mt father was Gabriel Zieminski and he was born on the 1st August 1918 in Delatyn, Poland but which is now in the Ukraine? Any help would be much appreciated - Thank you.

All I can find on him from familysearch.org is his death and marriage records which I presume you already have?
You don't say if you are trying to find present day relatives or are trying to trace the line back to his grandparents and further.

I am presuming that your father was Catholic and that you need to access church records for details of his birth. I am not sure how helpful this will be, but here is a link.

If you scroll down to 'Film Notes', you will see that the microfilm number 2005228 is the one you want to look at as it contains Roman Catholic church birth records for Delatyn from 1898 - 1926. You can order the microfilm via the online ordering and view it at a family history centre near you. Hopefully his birth record will be there, but you may have problems reading the writing, and it will be in Polish. If you are lucky and you do find it, there should be quite a bit of information within the record. Usually you will get parents ages, professions, place of residence, witnesses present.

Yes it is. Have a look at this link which gives a timeline as to the rule it was under ( due to Poland being partitioned ). In the year your father was born, Delatyn changed from being under Austro-Hungarian rule to Western Ukrainian ( briefly ). It apparently wasn't back under Polish rule until 1919.

Thank you for replying - I am a newbie to this site! I am trying to trace my Father's line back - I know his marriage and death details.

He did serve in the Polish Army in WW2 in Italy as a Rifleman and I believe he was eventually demobilised in Hereford in England.

I recall that he had a document that showed his parents names Dymtro and Maria and that it had a stamp on it showing the Austro-Hungarian reference.

I am trying to order a copy of the microfilm before the expiry date but am confused about the process but I will persevere!

I don't have any more information at this stage

to order a copy of the microfilm record 2005228 the website shows that it is available in Salt Lake City, Utah and I am in England - apparently there are no Family History Centres in the UK that this can be viewed at - is this the end of the trail or does anyone know another way of accessing this document for births in Delatyn on the 1st August 1918? I have ten days left before these records are no longer available to order!

Yes, familysearch.org is the famous datatbase held by the Mormon church who basically go around the world collecting birth, death and marriage records in order to baptize the entire world into the Mormon church (I'm not joking!) and save their souls. It has ended up becoming a primary resource for people researching their family history. I'm not clear Peter, are you saying that you know the location of the record but can't view it online?? You can use the search function below to turn up detailed records for free. You could then copy down the information. Let us know if you find what you needed.

Thank you for your post - I tried entering my Father's details into the search box at FamilySearch but it didn't come up with a match.

What I am trying to access is the microfilm record of the Roman Catholic Church in Delatyn (now in the Ukraine, formally in Poland) for the 1st August 1918 to see if his birth is recorded there together with any details of his family - I have confirmed that the microfilm (Reference Number: 2005228) is apparently available until the 31st August at the Family History Library at Salt Lake City, Utah - I have put out an appeal for help on annassociated volunteer website to see if anyone in Utah can help

Hi Peter, yes that would seem to be your only option. I took a look at some of their info and apparently the records which they've collected are still in the process of being digitized so they're not all currently available online. You would probably therefore need somebody to physically go to the Family History Library and search on your behalf :( However I saw a post on a forum from a few years ago where somebody said you can order a copy of the film for a nominal fee and view it at your local family history centre, don't know if that would apply outside the USA though.

That's incorrect. You need to search using 'exact match' (check the checkboxes underneath the names):

Once you have access to the original documents, you should be able to find out the names and birth dates of your grandparents and (probably) great grandparents.

Trying to find information Zieminski / Frydrych from Lezany.

I am looking for information on my great grandmother's parents, who were Stanislaus Zimenski (or Ziminski) and Eva (or Ewa) Frydrych. I have a marriage certificate that I will attach, it says Eva's father is Adalberto Frydrych and they lived in Lezany. She was born on 6 Feb 1881, and I have done a lot of research at genealodzy and the big 4 sites, and coming up with nothing. It's like they didn't even exist. Any other ideas or thoughts on how to find my ancestors?
