Uzdrowski, Makurath

Hi, I'm looking for my ancestors, Joseph Uzdrowski and Martha Makurath. Joseph was from Braunsberg, Prussia and Martha was born in Sierkowice. My question is, how do you find records in Sierkowice? I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Sierkowice

I believe the spelling is Sierakowice and it is about 50 km from Gdansk. There is also a village in the south of Poland by the same name, but if Joseph was from Prussia then Sierakowice near Gdansk may be the best place to start the search.

Church records are good place to search . The church in Sierakowice is Sw.Marcina. This church was rebuilt in the 19th century in place of the wooden one that stood before it.

Thank you for your reply. I have one more question. Martha's parents were married in Kaminstra Muhle. Is that near Gdansk? I think you are correct about checking Chuirch records. Thanks again,

I have other spellings of the name of the town (Kaminitzka Muhle) or (Mirchau, Karthaus). It is very confusing.

My name is Richard Healer, My father was John A. Healer who changed his name in the United States after WW2. He was born John August Uzdrowski. he had a Great Grandfather named Joseph and his wife's name was Mary, who immigrated in the 1860's to the United States. Are you sure of the last name of of the wife? both of ours start with MAR.

i have suspected he was from close to Gdansk or Gdynia. My father's mother was Martha Lesnau, born in Lesnau, West Prussia which i guess is about 50 KM from Puck.

I have been told from some who live in Poland that EVERYONE with the Uzdrowski lastname are related and there fewer than 400 in Poland. i have have some documents but i am looking for contacts in Poland who can assist me with my family research. i got most of my info from from my father and from ancestry.com .

Hello Richard,

I was mistaken. Joseph's last name was UZDROWSK. No i on the end. And Martha's last name was MAKURATH. Martha was from the Danzig area and Joseph from the Braunsberg area. They came to the US in 1892, moved to Philadelphia by 1907 and changed their last name to Schramm.
