Szczyglinski Sluchaj, possibility of being Russian?

To start, I am a "mutt." I'm approximately 60% Polish with the rest being English, Danish, French, German, Sicilian, Irish, and possibly Dutch.

However, according to Ellis Island, one of my ancestors came from "Sluchaj, Russia." I understand that Russia had power over a portion of Poland for quite some time, so I'm wondering if that leads to the possibility of me being Russian via some interbreeding. I'm absolutely fascinated by the Russian culture and by their history (and I only date boys born in Russia, lol), so I'd love to find out if I have some Russian blood.

Boleslaw Szczyglinski Sluchaj, Russia 1906 42

That is the proper spelling of my last name prior to it being changed in America to Seyglinski.

Here are a couple of pictures of me.. I know I've posted on another thread regarding my Polish features, but do I have anything that could be considered a Russian feature? I apologize for the photos... typical myspace/facebook shots, haha. These were back when I had blonde hair.. I'm a light brunette now.

A semi-profile shot with my mare that I recently sold. :/

Another profile shot, but I'll post this as a link since I'm kissing my ex boyfriend in it. My nose is scrunched up, but otherwise it's my normal profile. i49.tinypic.com/orv4ol.png

You get the chance of "having" ancesters from Poland yet you wish to have em from Russia... OMG

It's far more chance that the family had some Lithuanian, Belarussian or Ukrainian interbreeding.

Depends on which social level they were

Thanks for the replies.. I know this guy isn't a Russian, I'm just wondering about the likelihood of him marrying a Russian.. or any of my Polish ancestors marrying a Russian for that matter.

Haha, my mare was an Arabian that actually did have some Russian blood in her. She's a mostly Polish Arab though. ;)

Possibility of being Russian?

You may or may not be Russian. :) If your question is "do I look Russian" then my answer is that you don't look typically Russian. I'm not an expert though... I'm not always able to tell a Russian from a foreigner on a street.

The other thing is that people on European part of Russia largely share genetics with Poles, Ukrainians, Belorussians, Balts, Swedes, Finns and other existed nations. This caused by people moving eastwards from the west eventually contributing to what is currently known "the Russians". Thus I'm not sure if it's possible to identify whether you have any Russian blood. The only way I see here is to find any documents on your ancestors... Being Russian is not about the blood, it's more about spoken language, religion practiced, turn of mind maybe. :)

Thank you; I found your post quite interesting. :) I really wish I could find out more about my ancestry, but my 100% Polish grandfather passed away when my dad was a young teenager, so I never had the opportunity of meeting him.

First thing is........................................get over yourself.

Despite what some might tell you, it is not possible to tell the ancestral make-up of central and east Europeans through photographs. There is too much of a mix.

Get over myself? I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about. I'm incredibly self-conscious and hate how I look in photos. I just posted a handful to see if anyone had input on my facial structure.

Fair enough; I can tell you with absolute certainty that you are 1/4 Japanese; 1/4 Peruvian; 1/4; Mongolian; 1/8 Innuit and finally 1/8 Indian.

Your horse however is Polish Arabian.

The horse looks like he's on a serious slope and I don't envy him. (Check out my avatar, if you can).

i am a szczyglinski. we are polish without any possibility of any russian mixed in there. the poles hate the russians and would rather die than have sex with them.

SZCZYGLIŃSKI is definitely a Polish surname that originated as a toponymic nick from such places as Szczyglin, Szczygły, Szczyglice, etc. The root-word is szczygieł (goldfinch).

However, considering the various forms of Russo-Polish interaction that has occurred over the generations and centuries, it would be well nigh impossible to conclusively either confirm or rule out any Russian admixture to the Polish side of your family. A full-blown genealogical study would be required to determine that.

SZCZYGLIŃSKI

May be well Polish, but there're lots of people in Russia bearing the last name Щеглинский. It means same bird as in Polish.

I know I've posted on another thread regarding my Polish features, but do I have anything that could be considered a Russian feature?

When I woke up my humour was really bad but since I've read your thread I can tell I'm better now :)) I don't want to insult you, you seems very nice person, but don't you think it's a little bit silly to post your photos and ask "Do I look like Russian?". Because I can tell you I look like Irish though I'm not and I have no ancestors from there. If you want to know something about your Russian ascestors you have to FIND THEM :)

About "Szczyglinski" surname, it seems to be racial polish. But "Sluchaj" is very interesting. It means literally "Listen to that" in Polish. Are you sure this is a surname ? If it is, maybe you shoud find this word in Russian dictionary. Sometimes Russian and Polish words mean something completely different though they look similar.

Good luck :)

Here it's the same. :) Slushay/sluchaj (colloquial)="hey, listen!" imperative form of the verb.

Caaalmmm downn :)) Say: "Goooosssfraaabeeee" and take a deep breath. Ok now ? :)
I didn't say I hate you. That's true when you live with somebody for some time your stereotypes usually disappear. But believe me people in my age (which is under 30) have very rational approach for you although they have no experience with Russians besides reading books for history at schools...

Mystic - or is it Ashley ;)

Not sure if you "look Polish" - you definitely look pretty but the diversity of womens beauty-types in Poland is so wide that there's really no way to say you look Polish (or Russian for that matter).

I'm impressed that you came up with the number 60% of being Polish. At least it's over 50% However 75%+ would've been better... :) Hope you know I'm kidding. That number is probably as accurate as our governments deficit projection.

If your ancestry is really that important why don't you take a simple a DNA test? (cheek swab)

There are several companies that specialize in that, here's one.

dnaancestryproject.com

One way or the other we're all related. Heck, even Barrack Obama is related to Dick Cheney. LOL

The results won't be as specific as you'd want it to be but it'll put you in one (or several) of these categories:

Caucasian
European:
Eastern European: The Slavic-speaking region of eastern Europe.
Finno-Ugrian: The Uralic-speaking region of northeastern Europe.
Mediterranean: The Romance-speaking region of southwestern Europe.
Northwest European: The Celtic and Germanic-speaking region of northwestern Europe.
Aegean: Anatolia region, modern territories of Southern Italy and Sicily, Greece, and Turkey.
Near Eastern
Arabian: The Arabian Peninsula.
North African: Populations of the Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert.
Mesopotamian: The historical "Cradle of Western Civilization", including modern Iran, Iraq and nearby territories.
Levantine: Populations along the coast of the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
South Asian:
Eastern India
North India
South India
East Asian:
Subsaharan African
East African
Southern African
West African
American Indian
Polynesian

Your ancestor's name is as Polish as it gets so I'd imagine he was a Pole living in a Russian occupied area of Poland but I guess you never know. Whether he was involved with a Polish woman or Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Russian, or maybe German, who knows? Hopefully she was good to him and vice versa; that's what really matters.

If you really want to know about your ancestry open up some books, check stuff on the internet, do research - it's truly fascinating even if you are not into history. I'm sure undressing your Russian boyfriends is a lot of fun but what you find in their pants won't tell you about your past - but possibly about your family's future... ;)

On a different note - if your relative was indeed a Pole living in Russian occupied Poland - this gotta be quite ironic that here's his female offspring "[who's] absolutely fascinated by the Russian culture and by their history and [she] only date[s] boys born in Russia, lol" - wow - history is full of irony and surprises for sure.

PS. Your horse looks much more Kuwaiti possibly Yemeni rather than Arabian. I'd test her too! LOL

Who are you "talking" to? Explain your comedy movie again? Not sure what this movie (a link maybe?) has to do with her question?

Why do you people dont like Ruskies they are very nice people( if you lived in russia )

Don't like is not the right word. Don't trust is closer to the truth.

Has to do with history and the ruskyi propensity of killing as many cousins as possible - throughout the centuries - millions, more than "Gitler" ever dreamed of. Today they focus on "non-cousins" though - Chechens, Ingushetiens and Georgians. Who knows what tomorrow brings? Ukrainians maybe?
