oliver 1 | 5 9 Aug 2009 / #1Hi!Is here anybody who knows something about the SYKALA family? This family came from the town of Pruchnik or nearby village Chorzow and was greek catholic.Somehow am I unable to find out more than that PIOTR SYKALA was born in Pruchnik/Chorzow in 1861 and married ANNA MAZUR (born 1866, roman catholic)...I appreciate any help!
Polonius3 980 | 12276 10 Aug 2009 / #2SYKA£A: from syk (hiss, wheezing sound) - possibly a nick given to someone who spoke in a hissing manner, typcial of people with side tooth gaps that force air and saliva out when speaking: so Janko Sykała might have been Johnny the Hisser. This probably has nothing to do with your 19th-century relatives, as nicknames-turned-surnames usually go back many centuries.

OP oliver 1 | 5 19 Aug 2009 / #4yes, I know I could try that, but I do not know exact year of birth. Piotr was also a greek catholic, which makes my research much more difficult, as there is not such a parish in Pruchnik, now...
