Polish surname Youshefskie

My maiden name is Youshefskie. I have been told it is Polish. My father's last name was spelled Youshefski. I have found a few Youshefski's on a census in New York but I am pretty sure that this is not the original spelling of my last name. I am very interested in researching my ancestry but I am not sure how to find the correct spelling. With the name probably being Americanized its hard to tell what the original spelling was. I am thinking it could have been Yuschefski or even started with a J. Could someone help guide me please. Thank you so much

I think it's most probably Jurzewski (the original, Polish spelling).

Thank you. I will look into that spelling. There isn't anyone left in my family to ask. I have two second cousins with my maiden name and I found them in 2004. They don't know anything about their father which would have been my great uncle. I have family in New York but not sure of where or what their names are, I was just told that one of the females with the Youshefski name got married and had children but then the trail goes cold. Btw, because of the way your surname is spelled in English it would be "Juszewski" in Polish. But since when I googled the surnames the ones that came up where usually surnames of people in the past and Polish Americans, I wrote "Jurzewski". So maybe check "Juszewski" too.

It could be also spelled "Jużewski".
Still, I think Jurzewski would be most common nowadays in Poland.

I agree. The spelling of Youshefskie/Youshefskie suggests that someone intended to preserve the exact sounds of the Polish name (rather unusual in the USA), so Juszewski would likely be the original name. However, there is also Juszczewski which to an American ear would sound very similar to Juszewski. Currently, the are no Juszewskis in Poland, but there are 6 Juszczewskis. Juszewski is from personal names starting with Ju: Justyn, Julian, Józef. Juszczewski from the name Just, from Latin Justus "just;" also from Celtic Jodocus, Judocus.
