I was told that I look Jewish and Southwestern European, both of which I am. But what about them?

They could easly pass as Polish.

Regina Marie Yudiski Hayward

She can't have been born in Poland.

They look totally Central European. They could be Austrian, Hungarian, Polish, Czech, Slovak... Central European nations mixed for so many centuries that you can't really say which is which, genetically. My own family is a prime example - Czech, Belorussian Polish, Kashubian, East Prussian... and probably more that we don't know about.

she could have been born in Poland and then emigrated and changed her name in the USA.

She wasn't, but her parents were. Here's what they looked like:

  • Frances Andruszkiewicz Yudisky

  • Anthony Yudisky

Do they look Polish? They look just as Polish as they look from pretty much anywhere in Europe north of the Alps and south of the Artic circle. But those names not only do not look Polish, they very simply are not Polish.

I have their Polish names: Franciszka Andruszkiewiczowna Judicka and Antonio Judicki. So, you can stop trolling.

Though I am your detractor (since I believe only a practicing Jew or Matrineal line is Jewish and that it is not a race) It can be said fairly that both look European.

The ancestry of my Jews also has a Yuditskii...(not direct to me...only the Weiss are direct to me) and they are from around Kiev in my case. Which may be why Regina she more like my full Russian X MIL.

I could ask if I look Polish and if I present the right angle? I could...LOL. it is simply from my central EU background. Specially my Czech and German. But on other hand, once in the US; Regina also looks like the typical southerner of her age around Podunk here (this area is heavily German, Welsh, Scot, Irish).

My point is that it is not so cut and dried.

Picture A has people of these surnames: Schultz, Bagneski/Baggnes , Zorin (Sergeiv the look they inherited) and one person added as a
control. Who "Looks Polish? Some ? All ? None? I added numbers to pick out a Pole >_<

Picture B has 2 practicers of Judaism. One from direct Weiss/Weis line and one who has Weiss. The "full" Jew is the one with Yuditskii.

His lines are Ben Ali (from Constantinpol) and Hagen (Dresden). Hagen Married a Weiss who was daughter of Weiss & Yuditskii from Kiev (she moved to Prague area). By 1850 only one traceable Weiss line was still Jewish. Most live around Nurnberg and Dresden Germany with handful coming to PA/NY and spreading.

That's what I wanted to know: that is, how they look.

Maybe we do have Khazarate or Slavic ancestry in the Andrulewicz/Andruszkiewicz line. Did you see Ignacy's picture as well? They never did identify their tribal lineages, as far as I know.

I added numbers to pick out a Pole >_<

Ok, but I'm talking about my lines, though.

I have no idea. PS Here are pictures of Great-Granddad (an Anusi) for reference. Regina was his cousin's daughter.

  • He is holding Dad on his lap.

  • He's with Dad at Christmas 1962 or 1963.

  • With Dad after Dad broke his collarbone.

  • Same day.

They look like they could be from anywhere north of the Alps, south of the Arctic circle, west of the Urals and east of the Irish sea.

To be fair, I'm not seeing anything there which means they could not have been Jewish. Admittedly I'm not seeing anything at all there which makes me think that they were Jewish, but we certainly can't rule it out just based on their appearance. I mean, does this fellow look Jewish or like "The Ideal German Soldier" found on recruitment posters?

Wow. German? Hmmm. Incidentally, he does remind me a little of Alan Colmes (who I would guess has German or Dutch Jewish roots). Maybe we have German Jewish roots? That would not surprise me.

Or just German roots.

They could be German Jewish. Hell, they could be Sinti, Roma or Manouches. Admittedly they no more look Romani than they look Jewish, but we can't rule out them being Romani just because of the way they look.

I wondered if I could see a glint in the eye that suggests Gwlad Cymru. They definitely look a bit Welsh to me.

How about we consider their names as well? Their names place them in Central / Eastern Europe, and their looks don't contradict that. There isn't much more we can say about them.

The names they're using suggest that they either aren't Polish or don't want to be thought of as Polish.

I wondered if I could see a glint in the eye that suggests the Emerald Isle.

They don't look like the kind of people one would expect to see necking Guinness after a hard day picking potatoes or doing any of the other cliched 'Irish' things which Irish people are in reality no more likely to be doing than any other Europeans, but there's nothing in the photos which rules out Irish as their nationality, so we can't say that they are not Irish. OK, so they do look a bit more like the stereo-typical people who come from the area to the east of the Irish sea but that doesn't mean we can say they aren't Irish.

Hell, we can't even say that they aren't inter-dimensional shape-shifting aliens from the planet Tharg, admittedly they don't look like they aren't inter-dimensional shape-shifting aliens from the planet Tharg but that's a lot of the point of being about to shift one's shape; although if I got a hundred quid for guessing their nationality based on the way they look, I'd say Polish before I said Thargian.

don't want to be thought of as Polish.

Most Polish immigrants to the USA were quite eager to erase their ancestry. Though "Andruszkiewicz" kinda gives the game away in this case.

Fair enough, and what about Great-Granddad (Regina's mom's cousin and Ignacy's nephew)? Does he look Central/Eastern European or Jewish?

Does this man look German/Polish?

This is an ancestor of mine with roots in Prussian Poland. His father was definitely German, but his mother's ancestry is less clear, since she was born out of wedlock. Could the other half be fully Polish, or does his look suggest other origins to you? Thanks in advance.

Polish?

His rounder head and prominent cheek bones lookr rather slavic/polish to me.

The pure germanic heritage is immediately recognizable through the so called "horse face"...a longish, rectangle of a head.
Slavic heads are round with a bigger top/forehead.

But in this region people are so mixed, most have both features in several degrees... :)
