Wielgie village in Poland

Hi

My grandad came from this village in Poland and came over to England after the war finished. could anyone tell me anything about this village?

His surname was Janke. anyone know of any jankes living in this area?

Wielgie is a village in Lipno County, Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, in north-central Poland. It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Wielgie. It lies approximately 13 kilometres south-east of Lipno and 54 km south-east of Toruń.

The highest concentration of the name Janke is in the north-west, but that doesn't mean that that is where your father actually came from.

Based on geographical and historical data the village of Wielgie near Lipno seems the most likely choice out of the group of the four candidates you mentioned. Luckily for the OP, the website of this particular commune of Wielgie is lovingly maintained by a local historian at wielgie.pl

The settlements in the Commune and Parish Wielgie developed in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth century. A list of parishes of archdeaconry Dobrzyń shows that in 1510 there existed parish Wielgie of St. Lawrence, consisting of the villages: Wielgie, Nowa Wieś, Bętlewo, Tupadły, Modusy, Orłowo i Piaseczno.

In the Middle Ages the lake and adjacent area was the property of the prince, Conrad of Mazovia. The settlements around the lake have been repeatedly invaded and looted by raiding Prussian tribes, Lithuanians and the Teutonic Knights.

After the Second Partition of Poland in 1792 Frederick William II brought in Prussian settlers to the Dobrzyń lands, including areas around the lakes Tupadły-Piaseczno. They converted the wilderness around the villages Teodorowo, Piaseczno and Orłowo to the agrarian culture. The Prussian clans included: Strejlau, Janke, Wahl, Dill von Dellau, Rossol, Remer-Rejmer, Dikoff, Ditloff, Prusak, Hess, Rentfleisch and others. They build a Lutheran church, Protestant cemetery and schools in Orłowo and Theodore.

None is very conveniently located for a visit to Wielgie. You would still have to travel a bit by road.

I would guess from the names that your ancestors, as mine, which came from Tupadły, Lipno County, were of German ancestry. Google "Germans along the Vistula" and you will be able to get some information about them. Most of the information for the Churches will probably lost or scattered.

When my grandmother came to NY in 1907 she was listed as German, of German Ethnicity, but coming from Russia at that time. The only part of "Poland" legally was about 10 kilometers around Warsaw.

Looking for the surname Krygier in this area. My great grandmother came from Wielgie, Russia in 1890 at the age of 4, with her mother Victoria 40, brother Anton 11, brother Josef 9, Thomas 7, and sister Marie 2. They departed Hamburg in March of 1890, arrival Port of New York 1 April 1890. I know nothing more about what happened to/with the rest of her family or her father. She lived to be 94, and I was 11 when she passed away, so I remember her quite well. She spoke mostly Polish, but knew some German as well, I don't remember her speaking Russian, but I'm not sure if I could have identified it anyway. Her name was Laskadya/ Leokadya Krygier (married surname was Redmerski). Anyone who can help would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail is lkonehead@yahoo
