Stepp / Stepanski / Szczepanowski - Help with family lineage from Poland

Last name is currently Stepp. I have found that my ancestor moved here in 1866 from Poland with the last name Stepanski. I've done some digging on my own and based on how the surnames came to be with coats of arms and tribes in Poland I believe our last name was originally Szczepanowski. Which leads me to believe we were originally from or near Szczepanow, Poland.

Just wondering if I'm on the right track. Any help would be appreciated

What does the ship's manifest say your ancestors were from? Have you checked the naturalization records yet? Any census records available?

I haven't been able to find a ship. I found a census record stating that the last name was Stepanski but I do not know when they changed it.

Do you know the port of entry? Ellis Island or somewhere else? Either way, try this:

libertyellisfoundation.org
immigrantships.net/

If you know the year of your ancestor's naturalization, you might be able to find the record through one of these web sites:

archives.gov/research/naturalization/
germanroots.com/naturalizationrecords.html

The naturalization record contains all the information you need.
