Searching for a village in Southern Poland (Baddi?)

Hi,

I am trying to identify a village in Southern Poland. The name I was given is BADDI.

The person born there in 1900 had connections with a part of the Czech Republic which gained it's independance from Austria-Hungary in 1918-20, and was returned to Hungary 1938-45. Presumably that area is back in the Czech Republic now.

So I assume this village is somewhere near the border between Poland and the Czech Republic. Nothing shows up on Google Maps.

Any suggestions would be welcome

Richared.

No parts of the Czech republic were given to Hungary during that time, all the land was part of Slovakia. As for where it is now, almost of the land taken by Hungary in 1938 is now in Slovakia and most of the land taken in 1939 is now in Ukraine.

Could Baddi have been the Hungarian version of Baden (Baths), a term frequently used in the German-speaking world for medicinal mineral springs. A well.known exmaple is Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary in Czech) in the Czech Republic.

Harry, you are right. I should have said the area belonged to Czechoslovakia, became part of Hungary and now is part of Slovakia. So I was looking in the wrong part of Southern Poland.

Polonius, the name of the village came via a friend in New Zealand, so I have no doubt that the name I have of Baddi, could be a long way from the original pronunciation of the name.

As far as I know, you're actually looking in the wrong country: none of the territory taken by Hungary in 1938/9 is now part of Poland, it is all in either Slovakia (the parts taken in 1938) or Ukraine (the parts taken in 1939).

Sorry I didn't make it clear. The person I am interested in was born in 'Baddi' but I gather that afterwards, the family settled in that part of Czechoslovakia that changed hands. In the absence of any more precise information I am working on the principle that in those days few people travelled great distances so I am hoping the two locations wouldn't be too far apart.

There are 2 localities in Poland called Bajdy, one is in the SUb-Carpathian region not too far from the Slovak border:

Bajdy - wieś w woj. podkarpackim, w pow. krośnieńskim, w gminie Wojaszówka
Bajdy - wieś w woj. warmińsko-mazurskim, w pow. iławskim, w gminie Zalewo.

Considering the Austro-Hungarian-Slovak-Polish lingustic confusion and the widespread illiteracy of East-Central Europe in the 19th and on into the 20th century, could it not jave been Bajdy?

Thanks Polonius, Bajdy near the Slovak border sounds like a good bet to start with.
